Tempted to say one of the greatest country songs ever written, and performed. But it really transcends country. The comic but achingly painful verses by the tenors were just brilliant. And Harold hitting the beautifully deep "Kaaa-ngaroo" a half beat before the others was always one of the most fun two seconds I could ever enjoy in a song. RIP Harold, and Lew.

This song I truly believe has for half a century, been one of the most spontaneously sung / enjoyed tunes with small to medium sized gatherings of the period. Situations where you could hear one another, if you will. Amazing grace, precious memories, angel band, papa was.a rollin stone, the thrill is gone and a few more come to mind, but I wonder if folks who weren't there to witness / realize just what a big deal this song was and is. I'm from north east ms and you can go hundreds of miles in most directions, and I'm giving you a factual presentation. The term iconic is overused, but in this case any and all veneration is apt to come up far lacking. All to say: None of these joyous moments would have occurred without the beautiful voice of Harold Reid. Thank you sir.
