Half a century later and this song is still awesome. Isn't it interesting that one of the things that KZbin, ubiquitous entertainment nexus of the early 21st century, does really well is make it lightyears easier than it used to be for this generation to discover and enjoy the greatest elements of culture from their parents' and grandparents' generations, things they otherwise may have ridiculed and rejected just because it's "old"?

@@TheReaper0101 I know this comment is 3 years old but I keep seeing people posting things like this and feel the need to reply. People most certainly were not "happier" back then, it's just that creating media and disseminating it took a tremendous amount of effort. Some people had mild success with independent content, but mass distribution was heavily controlled by network executives. You can be sure that all of the content they pushed out was packaged in a very specific way. Nowadays any person of any age and any demographic can roll out of bed and make and post any type of media/discussion they want at the push of a button/touchscreen. You get to see raw parts of humanity instead of what an executive thinks is most profitable. That being said, social media platforms and their algorithms nowadays are definitely trying to push us back towards a system where a few people in control get to decide what everyone sees, but it's not nearly the same as it was 60 years ago.

I can't believe I feel so sad over Harold's passing, like someone in my family. I loved his humor, his looks, his deep, deep bass--I wait for the Kang....before the others come in with Kaangaroo. The very best of all of the groups ever to come on the country scene, or any other genre for that matter. Their harmony was so well done, a perfect balance of all of the parts. They were a class act, always nice and well-spoken. Truly, they were America's poets. And they never let their fame and money go to their heads. I just feel profoundly saddened that their era has passed. The world discovered them in the 60s; I discovered them in 2019 and can't get enough of them! I wasn't there when Lew passed but Jimmy has been a very talented replacement, a beautiful voice and skilled string player. He is the best of the best they could have found--and they deserved the best.

Music is pretty much my life. I play it, I produce it, I've lived for it for quite some time now. While I've never been a big fan of this particular genre, if someone were to ask me what is the greatest lyrical masterpiece ever set to song, in about the amount of time it takes a batter to decide to swing at a fastball, my answer would be this song.... and I'd sit on Townes Van Zandt''s shoulders, look Bob Dylan in the eye and tell him to his face. In my opinion, lyrically, best song ever.

The Statler Brothers are from my home town and had Happy Birthday USA for 25 years bringing in country music stars every year like Johnny Cash and June Carter, just name about any top star then and they came. They were discovered by Johnny Cash and toured with him and then had the highest rated variety show on CMT for 7 years when they struck out on their own. They are all fine men and harmonize beautifully. I've seen one at the Food Lion many times and worked the hot dog stand with another one at a high school football game. Another always came to our basketball games. Anybody who doesn't like their singing is just plain sick in the head and I'm not even a big country music fan, I prefer rock so put that in your pipe and smoke it !!

I remember this as a kid. Its lyrics are extremely clever. Yes, it appears he has run into his 'ex-GF' who borke up with him, and yes he's getting over it. Counting flowers on the wall, etc. shows he's working through it, with some dark humour, but is confident he'll get over it. Reminds me of the matter-of-fact acceptance of fate that makes the song 'King of the Road' similar in attitude. Life throws you curves...but you can get by, given time. And what a video! Talent, talent, talent.

Now why can't music today be as good as it was back then? I might be in my mid-twenties but I like a lot of older music better than the newer stuff.

@CarlDuke Only TWO of the Statler Brothers are actually brothers (Harold Reid and Don Reid). The rest you're right about. * Lew DeWitt ( Rhythm guitar, tenor vocals) * Phil Balsey * Don Reid * Harold Reid (Bass vocals)

Wow...awesome video of the Statler Bros. My grandma is one of the biggest fans of the Statlers you'll ever meet. She has every one of their albums they have ever released so I grew up listening to them. This is my favorite song of theirs as well as their Gospel songs.

I remember when this song first came out. It hit the top 10 on the pop charts. There are some songs that are not really of any genre, but instead cover many musical areas, and this song is definitely one of them. First Statler Brothers song I ever heard, and I've been in love with their music ever since. Thank you for sharing the video with us, teqtonyk. Much appreciated.

When I was 11 or 12, my best friend Rob Herrman gave me this single for my birthday. We played it a couple of times on the stereo and were in my room visiting. I had put the record on the bed and my younger brother came into the room, sat on the record and broke it right in half.

For a live performance, it is a good showing. Between that and a recorded version by Danny Davis & the Nashville Brass ( an instumental version) , it is tough to select which is the better version of the song.

Rarely, can you point to a song that is an ultimate representation of an emotion or the ultimate summary of a point in your life. However, that is what this song is for depression.

I don't think this is a silly song, it is more uplifting than the National Anthem and at least people can sing it without busting a gut. As for the comment by fallaflunkie, maybe he should learn to play instrument. It is good therapy for when I run into guys like him. Thank you Statler Brothers, and all you guys have a great day.

I recently lost my father to diabetes brought on by years of alcohol abuse. He was a clever, kind and thoughtful man who'd become afflicted by something that in the end he just couldn't stop. This song always reminded me of him even when he was still alive, someone who desperately wanted to give an illusion of well being and grandeur despite being in tremendous inner turmoil almost everyday. The line "Slow the swigger down" will always run home one a personal level for me. Dad, you were a gent and a scholar, ill miss you forever.

How in the world this group got their name I'll never know--not a "Statler" in the bunch and they aren't all brothers. But no matter--the Statlers are one of the best vocal groups ever! Can't beat their harmonies. This song--one of their best--also made it onto the pop charts. You don't hear groups like this anymore (unfortunately). Talent is no longer necessary to sell music. Pretty sad. Thanks for this upload!
