I remember when they were a gospel group and got hired by Johnny Cash to be his back up singers. Always loved the Statler Brothers. They had so many great songs.

My favorite group…they were soooo inventive!!! Wrote it for Johnny’s 25th anniversary in showbiz TV special.

One of the clearest examples of The Statlers as Johnny's backup singers, to me, is "Daddy Sang Bass". Johnny sings "daddy sang base", June sings "momma sang tenner", then the Statlers sing "me and little brother just joined right in there". If you look the song up on YT, there's a live version with The Statlers standing behind.

Thanks Carolina, Farm Daddy and Don!! This is one of my favorite songs. I love the fact it was all based on a handshake. No contract needed. How times have changed.

The cover Johnny Cash's Give My Love to Rose on the Short Stories album. Lew Dewitt, the original tenor, absolutely nails it. His voice may be one of the most unique in the history of music.

Love the Statler Brothers & this song! Can't wait to see what you think about it. They wrote & recorded some great songs!!! If you haven't listened to it yet, another great song that will make you laugh is, "You can't have your Kate & Edith too."

Johnny was grappling with addiction problems. June said she wouldn't marry him unless he got himself straight.
