I disagree with your answer of what steampunk is or means. I thought it was how the world would of evolved had the Victorian era continued into the future. It's all Victorian steam, clothing, cogs and pipework but given a modern twist. As if the old engineers of the 19th century were designing the future. Hence steam ray guns, steam space ships and modern gadgets given a Victorian twist.
@RadioRetrofuture5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply First of this video isn't about what Steampunk is or isn't. It is about the people who form the community. As to your definition. It is a way to describe the aesthetics of Steampunk. But Steampunk consists of so much more than visuals. By defining at stated above, you ignore all the other expressions of Steampunk and it various sources of influence that can be found over the world.

If you want our take on Steampunk aesthetics and the genre, follow our comic project on Kickstarter. , Journey to Elysium, with art by Yohan Alexander follow us on Kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/bonsartbokel/journey-to-elysium It also has a community website www.associationofishtars.com with tons of free original content. Based on a number of remarks in the comments I decided to clarify some things here, even though I talk about these topics in later video's. This video is not on the topic of 'What is Steampunk?' As a preview of later video's, we describe Steampunk as three separate topics. 1. The Genre 2. The Visual design 3. The Subculture We believe this is a very important distinction to make when having any discussion on the topic of Steampunk. With that being said, please keep sending us your feedback and if you disagree or need elaboration, please clarify what part of the video you are referring to so we can improve our content.

I'm mostly interested in the functionality of steampunk machinery in video games or around the house as curiosities, I find it a bit pointless to glue a gear onto something and call it steampunk, I'd prefer to find things that actually function even if not efficiently.
@CallMeMrRook7 жыл бұрын
I'm still not clear on what a steampunk is.... because of late I've been told it is literally ANYTHING I want it to be..any colour any design...anything..is steampunk ??
@RadioRetrofuture7 жыл бұрын
Well explained that problem in an earlier video, steampunk does not exist. But more video still to come.... But basicly, is is cyberpunk in the past. Or popculture in the past. But yes, anything can be steampunk. It is so deluded from were it started, Steampunk is a feeling at this point. It is a matter of context really. What Steampunk primarily look for is immersion. I wanted to touch more on this in the community of lifestyle video. Put I victorian in a victorian setting. It is historical drama. Put a 19th century individual in a Space Ship it is Steampunk. And make that last thing a bit believable. Putting two things together that original don't fit, and it might be Steampunk. Might be.
@CallMeMrRook7 жыл бұрын
so at the end of the day, if it has a cog on it, then its steampunk? which seems to be the way ppl explain why something is steampunk...
@RadioRetrofuture7 жыл бұрын
But I have a threepart series in the works. First part is done for a very long time actually, but haven't posted it yet because .. Resaons. And now I want to add Dankaert as well.
@RadioRetrofuture7 жыл бұрын
Well, sadly, yes. When we see it we both know were they got the idea from. Like I stated before. To me, It is a source of inspiration. It gives people idea's how to do certain things. So Yes. We both know were the inspiration for the cog came from.... But that doesn't make it good art or Steampunk. But that is a whole different can of beans. All we can do is say, " please stop it."
@CallMeMrRook7 жыл бұрын
so.. are you saying...just because it has a cog it isn't steampunk... eg if i glue a cog to a washing up liquid bottle still full of liquid, then it 'shouldnt' be considered steampunk...because simply put... its a washing up liquid bottle...with a cog on it? though does that through into the cauldron the wearing of cogs as decoration, which is surely permitted as it adds to the whole unit?

While this video did touch on some of the highlights of The Steampunk subculture, I feel it included genres which actually fit into other subcultures. Real steampunk is fairly specific as to the era it comes from, that being the Victorian age/Industrial revolution. Anything not fitting comfortably in that time period is something else.

So I might have a hot take on something The steampunk fandom is somewhat similar in essence to the furry fandom, bare with me here. So the first point is that most people think everyone is interested in the cosplay aspect of it while that isn't the case, as people can be interested in it without having to cosplay, yet they feel obligated a little bit to do so in order to not look like that one random person that just wanted to take a picture. Secondly, they had their origins a while ago, but it is only now that they're becoming mainstream. Third point, they're both not based directly on a specific thing (like star wars fandom, Steven universe Fandom, marvel Fandom, etc) but instead they're both based on a main concept from which their members build up from, in the steampunk fandom that concept being the 19XXs style but if they made modern day technology, and the furry fandom's base concept being animals that have human traits (anthropomorphic). Difference being that one of them is nowadays well known and respected by everyone and the other had a CSI episode where they got depicted as a sort of sex cult which drove it's reputation to the ground thanks to the little to no research and poor writing the creators of CSI made.
@RadioRetrofuture4 жыл бұрын
I pretty much agree fandom... I think that both started in the 80's. As for furies reputation, the sex thing is based on more than just one CSI episode. The story might have based on what happened at events such as Furrest and some other trends that happened in the early years of the fandom. I think some organisations have attempted to purge such elements from the fandom since than, but it might hunt them for another decade or so.
@RenTully4 жыл бұрын

@@RadioRetrofuture Well, there's one person that comes to mind that I think would be interested, Ash Coyote, she made a full length documentary on the furry fandom and it's origins so if there's one person who's the most qualified to talk about our origins it would be her. I inquired what steampunk means,,,no body can tell me. From reading here it appears to just be anything or things connected together..........no rhyme or reason? I remember asking my dad sometimes what something was and he would just say something like.........its a thing of a gig, or thing of a bob! Guess that was before he word steampunk was invented?

The term steampunk was invented in the 80's as explained in the video. Where I believe the confusion comes from is that people often talk about Steampunk being this one thing. For me, the word was three meanings. 1. A retrofuturistic aesthetic heavily inspired by early science fiction and futurism 2. A genre of stories, I like to describe as Cyberpunk in the past. 3. A community of people with like-minded interests, including costuming, crafting, music and writing. More confusion stems from the fact people do not make a distinction between 'Steampunk' and the historical aesthetic movements, and fiction that inspired it. I explain these topics throughout the Beginners Guide series and my blog on www.associationofishtar.com

Does Anyone Know A Good Way To "Steampunkify" Your Cell Phone For Cons? I'm Planing For My First Steampunk Con,But Really Don't Want To Ruin My Outfit By Holding A Cell Phone (I'll Need It To Call Up My Ride,Since I Don't Drive And The People I'm Going With May Or May Not Be Joining Me At The Con. They Have A Interest In It,But Not Sure How Much Yet). Any Suggestions On How I Could Fix Up My Phone So That It's Con Ready,Without Full Out Modding It?

Paint will do a lot. Painting it red or gold can break the current look just fine. Beyond that you can take it as far as you want. I am not wearing it in this video but for this costume I have a Steampunk like Pipboy made by a friend of mine. You could make a case of any material, like EVA foam or leather. A google search will also help you a lot.

From what I gather Steampunk is not completely definable in one way. The definition changes from person to person. Does it have to be so tightly defined? It's a community that seems to be largely made up of artists. Maybe it's only a mindset. One that varies person to person. I choose to not define it.

Not sure if this is a response to the content of the video. But a question I think is making a video on at some point.
