The Steinhart Ocean One Titanium 500 Wristwatch: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

Today, we'll check out an interesting dive watch from an underappreciated brand, the Steinhart Ocean One Titanium 500 Wristwatch. It's Titanium, it's legible, it's on a nice bracelet, and the lume is to die for. But the face is a bit flat, Steinhart doesn't get much love in the watch world, and the lugs are ridiculously long. So, it's a very, very good watch, and a near-gem, but doesn't quite hit the mark.
Also, sorry, I forgot to change after work again.

This must be the only 500m diver with an ETA (let alone a 2892) for ~$600. And with those dimensions and in titanium. A steal in my mind.

I can highly recommend this watch. I’ve worn it day and night for over 3 years now. Never take it off. It looks beautiful and I get comments on it regularly. Also it’s proven to be very robust and it will definitely take a beating. I’m not particularly careful with it since I work construction and never take it off. I have to say tho, use a bit of locktight (or in my case: superglue) to secure the screws in the bracelet. They have come undone with mine resulting in me accidentally dropping the watch off of a fire escape staircase two story’s high. The watch survived it (that’s why I know it can take a good beating) but it left a chip in the housing (ads some character in my opinion). Also I have to adjust the time about 5 minutes forward every month or so with mine. I’m not a huge watch guy and I don’t plan on collecting any watches, but I love quality products. I’m very happy with this one and love wearing it. I will continue to wear it until it either gives up or I’ll pass it on to my future kids. Great review Nick! Caused me to make the purchase a while back!

The grade 2 titanium most commonly used on watches scratches quite a bit more easily than stainless steel. Titanium can be surface hardened (common on higher end japanese quartz pieces) to be about the same or a little better than stainless. Some luxury watches use grade 5 titanium which is much more scratch resistant than stainless. So it pays to research a titanium watch you are interested in because they are not all equal.

Is it usually marked as Grade 5 in the watch world? Coming from knives, I usually see it marked as 6Al4V, but they're the same thing.
@jimboutilier7552

My experience has been that there is rarely a specification and you have to dig to figure it out. As a rule of thumb, a greyish matte finish is usually grade 2. If it's polished it's usually grade 5. And if it's hardened it usually says.

Just got my Steinhart, love it. It took a long time to get here because it was held up in customs. They released it the next day when I called FedEx and complained. Love the fix, for me watches with elongated cases stay put on my wrist better than the round shorter cases that tend to roll more on my wrist.

I’m looking into purchasing this as my first dive watch. Judging from the specs and overall design choices, this watch seems pretty great. I personally think that people get too bent out of shape about companies that produce homage watches. I don’t own any homage watches but just because a company produces some homages doesn’t mean much to me at all. This is a great looking original design using a very high quality movement, quality materials and it comes in at a very attractive price. I’m probably gonna buy one of these within the week unless I stumble across something else that I just have to have first. I really don’t care if other watch guys turn their noses up at me for owning a Steinhart. It’s an incredible value for money and I think it looks great. Choosing what to buy or not buy based on what a bunch of sad strangers might think is no way to live. I like having multiple watches, therefore I look for value just as much as I look for quality. Of course I could sell off all of my watches and buy one Omega or maybe one Tudor but then I only have one watch. Of course I’d love to be able to afford a bunch of expensive watches but I can’t at this point so I’d rather have a collection of nice, super high value pieces instead of one very expensive watch which, if we’re all being honest, is really only about 5-10% nicer despite being 5-10 times the price.

Great functionality. Luminosity and blue ring are attractive. Aesthetics are minimalistic that wouldn't need much rework to be excellent. Mismatched titanium is a little disappointing. Overall, much more good than bad. Let us know if you find a quartz brother...

If the dial on a watch is round, people claim it's a homage. Rolex didn't invent the wrist watch so I guess they're designs are homages too.

Titanium - I bought a $100 Invicta Titanium "divers" watch about five or six years ago. The movement is a 25-jewel Seiko (Chinese built Seiko) mechanical, and the watch looks pretty much exactly like a Rolex model that came out two or three years later. The Invicta has a windowed back just like the Steinhart reviewed here, and I guess it has a mineral glass crystal, because after years of 24 x 7 wear, there is not a scratch on the watch anywhere. The lume is weak, and setting the time can also set the date, which is ungood. But the titanium is awesome, making that watch feather light. What elicited my comment was a comment farther down regarding the hardness of titanium, and I just wanted to chime in on that subject. Time-keeping accuracy is not so good. Bad, by my standards. Three or four minutes per week slow, easily.

My last watch purchase came down this and the 50 Atmos from Squale. I went with the Squale, but I'm going to have one of these. The value for money from Steinhart is exceptional. I'm just not into the pretend Rolex vibe which, sadly, makes up a large percentage of their lineup. This is more its own animal. If "watch guys" look down their nose at my watch, then they're not watch guys, they're assholes.

Aside the great and interesting review, may I dare (as a non native speaker) to say I like your entertaining and colorful expression together with accent/local dialect, it keeps the focus of those who listen. To add up on that - you would be phenomenal sport commentator. There is actually one name on KZbin which resembles me your expressive style, together with timbre nearly identical to your's, just more stylized, hyped and pushed up a bit. His name is Thesaurus or something - making pretty nice review/analysis of the things, with great humour and oversight. At first I thought it must be you! Nevertheless - thank your for your great video again!!i

A little late to the game but I have a Victorinox Dive Master in Gunmetal. I've had it for 2-3 years and it's a fucking tank. Unbelievably durable. Having said that the chronometer function is wonky and the gunmetal finish is starting to wear a bit. The Lume is extremely bright and while the quartz movement requires a battery every 24 months of so. Having said that, it is so accurate I have never had to reset the time except when I travel to a different time zone. I'm currently considering buying a Steinhard Ocean 1 or 2 at the moment, however.

i think the plain dial is a style thing more than a cost thing. impossible to know, but as you've said we've seen similar decisions on similarly styled watches. applied indices are nice, but would kill the minimalist look imo. i think the whole idea is that there isnt anything shining in your face when you go to look at the time. the only thing i can think of that would be minimal but increase the appeal visually is if the indices were embossed just enough to notice if you looked carefully. i don't love dive watches, the bezel just makes the whole thing too beefy looking for me, but i love the dial and hands on this watch. personally i would love it if watchmakers would stop putting text on the dial at all, but i dont think that will ever happen.

The titanium grade is kind of annoying. The website says 5 and other says 2 etc. So I contacted Steinhart by phone and they confirmed its a Grade 5. I then contacted them by email and another Steinhart confirmed the Grade 5. So it is a Grade 5 unless Steinhart lies about it. :-)
