A little background here as my grandfather worked at the Science Center for nearly 25 years so I grew up with the place. I'm extremely familiar with the building, including many of the staff only areas. The Dover elevator is the original from when the building opened in 1991. There is an an identical (though not as nice cosmetically) Dover in the back areas for staff use. There is also a freight elevator. The glass Otis in the atrium was added during a renovation around 2003. They actually had to remove the ceiling/roof and use a crane to lift the trusses and lower them into the building.

That is awesome. I wish I could see the big freight elevator. Thanks so much for the story. I visited it when it was brand new in 1991. I remember the old science center which is now the theater.

You need to see the Louisville Science Center in downtown Louisville. It has a fast Dover with Impulse and huge Murphy with GAL.

Yeah the dover is original and was always backing up. The other elevator was really needed.

I figured it out. It is in case of an emergency egress people will know which floor is the exit floor.

Yes it did. The building was renovated around 2002-2003 and the escalators were replaced with a staircase at that point.

I think the reason the gate is there is for an emergency egress. that way people wont go down to a non exit floor.
