I hope this video can be a guide to what reporting child abuse and neglect can look like for a school counselor. Every situation is different and the protocols I follow in my school district might look different than yours so please be sure to talk to you administrator and or school district about the protocol for you to follow.

Can you tell me what happens when I teacher, child counselor, or child therapist doesn't report child abuse that they know for sure is happening. What happens to the counselor

Thata a great question: If a counselor etc. suspects child abuse and does not report it, many states have the power to impose penalties on these individuals who knowingly or willfully fail to make a report. Some states consider failing to report a felony while most states consider it a misdemeanor. Some states can prosecute the failure as a misdemeanor or felony based on the seriousness of the alleged conduct and harm. Possible penalties include imprisonment and significant fines.

If a student discloses abuse to their teacher, then you talk with them and report it, do you do follow ups with that student? And if so, how often?

That’s a great question. There is not a certain amount of follow ups you have to do and if any at all. Also, it just depends on the situation and how comfortable the student is with you checking on them in regards to that. You can let them know that you are available if they want to talk and you can ask the student if they would like for you to check on them and if so you can work out a schedule. I hope that helps. @@TheInspiringSchoolCounselor, I'm actually a student, but I was wondering because mine had to report abuse that was happening to me, and I get stressed every time I see mine (she has done nothing, I was diagnosed with OCD because of having an intense fear of my school counselor. Which is weird because she has never done anything wrong.) I just was wondering what to expect for me. But thank you!
