Under the tutelage of Hal Overton Steve propelled himself into Miles Davis' Live Evil band. The Stone Alliance with Don Alias and Gene Perla provided the proper balance of pulse, dynamics, tension and funk.

Shout out to Jake for standing 10 toes down regarding the differences between blacks and non-blacks swing back in the day. I was listening to this with my grandfather who met Steve in the 70's and played with many of the musicians steve has and he agreed that there was a HUGE difference back then. Today, that feel has been adopted and taught in school so now everyone has it. My Grandfather jokingly said "Back then, we clapped on 1 & 3 we were on the UP-BEAT, black folks clapped on 2 & 4.. They were RIGHT." Thank you for this interview. Rip Steve.

Steve was a force of nature, I was fortunate enough to study, play with and be his friend. He could hear ANYTHING and play it back to you. IT WAS SPOOKY.

That soprano GrossMan from the 70s is just so heavy with Don Alias band..man..IMHO GrossMan was a direct extension of Rollins and Coltrane. Love it.

All the interviewer keeps saying is: "can you talk about"; "talk to me about"; and "I'd like you to talk about" - it is a ridiculous way to conduct a conversation! At a couple of points SG actually says: "no!, I want to talk about this instead!" The whole interview was an embarrassment.

Awful interviewer to a great player. However, I'm glad Steve checked him every step of the way...

Typical dumb questions from "journalist" (whatever that means) who is oblivious to the craft of music. By the Senor Feinberg, two of the greatest and most swinging drummers of all time, Buddy Rich and Steve Gadd, are white.
