✅ SHOP NOTES: In our previous video on Rotary Planers, we took a look at the original Wagner Safe-T-Planer and Medallion Rotary Planer, but my StewMac (Stewart-MacDonald) Safe-T-Planer was nowhere to be found! If you missed that first video, I highly reccomend it. • Do you NEED a Wagner S...
🎬 Thanks to Lyle, (AKA: MrPete222 & Tubalcain) for his contribution to this video and for putting my mind at ease about Jacobs chucks. Be sure to check out his channel here: / mrpete222 Lyle even posted a video that expands on this topic here: • SHORT SUBJECT #5 Drill...
Here are links to a few of the products I used or discussed in this video:
🟢 My favorite 9" long T-handle "Shopsmith Toolbox" 5/32" Hex Wrench: amzn.to/3sm3NcJ
🟢 The StewMac "Safe-T-Planer" is the closest thing available today to the original Wagner design, but also features the double sided blades of the Medallion Planer. Find it here: amzn.to/3AVQxTJ
🟢 StewMac even sells their Safe-T-Planer new on eBay! ebay.us/8i0niM
🟢 Here's the Shopsmith 1/2" router chuck, which is recommended for use with the Wagner and the Medallion rotary planer, on eBay: ebay.us/GObHWJ
🟢 These are the double-edged replacement cutters for the StewMac Safe-T-Planer: amzn.to/3RsI5ki Note that they claim (And I can confirm) that they are only for use with the the StewMac rotary planer.
🟢 Here's a link to everything categorized as a "Rotary Planer" on eBay: ebay.us/EUDXaK Be aware there there have been a LOT of knock-offs and so pretty huge failures that tried to compete with Wagner, so my advice would be to stick with Wagner, StewMac or the Medallion brand.
🛑 Hers' a link to the DISCONTINUED Woodworker's Supply import version, for comparison: woodworker.com...
🔎 If you have any interest is seeing the US Patent for the Wagner Safe-T-Planer, here's the link: patents.google...

Use a dial indicator on the the table in the chuck and you will get it dead nuts. Also If you have a older machine and the bearings are getting worn you can have runout issues that can cause issues in ever function. Also the old old machines before the mid 80's have on less bearing in them unless they have been upgraded.

I have gotten in to more arguments over tightening all 3 holes vin the chuck, my shop teachers were older then Mr. Pete. One was a WW2 fighter pilot, the other was too old to serve, this was back when schools still had corporal punishment. If either teacher caught you only tightening one whole, they would give the boot ... literally in the seat

My brother's father-in-law died several years ago and through the normal ( for us at least) family twists and turns I just recently acquired his SS. I had already gone through all the boxes and I'm still cleaning some of the less used stuff. Today ( 2022/08/11) I happened to look in a box full of containers of old finishes and found a cardboard box with a Wagner Safe-T-Planer in it. It looks like it hasn't been used.

Those things are really fun with a radial arm saw, makes real short work of flattening rough lumber mounted on a sled. I never thought of using one with a drill press.

Many years ago in high school metal shop I remember using Jacobs chucks with a Morris taper on metal working lathes. They fitted into both the tail stock and head stock. There were no problems with slippage but I would guess a lot depends on the accuracy and length of the mating surfaces. Vertical and horizontal boring machines also used tapers but had locking collars as well. As far as the Jacobs chuck jaws being damaged due to the load of the planer it would depend on the chuck. Some chucks are huge, beefy and made of good metal, others are small, dinky and cheap. Feed rate, depth of cut and material also play a part. Wood in general puts a lot less stress on everything but you need to listen with your ears and feel with your fingers. Vibration indicates problems. YMV really applies.

@@MyGrowthRings I buy from Stewmac all the time. Most of their tools are high quality & priced to reflect that. Plus being a specialty stringed instrument building supplier the have only a few competitors for most items. I’m gonna make a vid of a guitar made completely with the Shopsmith. I’ve been putting it off for fear of the prices of parts going up too fast😉

A lot of times I make one pass then put crank my table out and put the fence on it. Then I just crank it in moving the fence away for each pass. I just feel more secure with it against a fence, I love my little wagner. Now does the new one come with a sharpening stone?

Great info Scott (as always). From the pictures I sent you you can see I used the Jacobs chuck and used the planer to make smoke parts for a model I’m building. So here is a question I have. I was unable to accurately dial in the thickness of 3/16 I needed for the parts how would you go about setting the depth of cut to accurately get the desired dimension? I ended up sanding to get there.
@MyGrowthRings
@MyGrowthRings 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll show that in the Q&A, but considering the finish these leave it’s not a bad idea to plan on taking it to final thickness with a sander. Scott

Impressive continuing exploration of several advantages as well as concerns with this peculiar tool. I have one concern with your (Scooter) opinion which 'Mr.Pete', the Internet teacher advised. To wit: side thrust on tapered chicks such as the ubiquitous MT is a no-no. I am no expert, but in the years I worked as a machinist and toolmaker, every milling operation that I did (with fly cutters and end mills) that traversed the workpiece was done with cutting tools held in Morse Taper (or similar) collets. I've never heard of a tool falling out except when not thoroughly cleaned, or not firmly seated. I sincerely hope 'MrPete' will clarify. (Hey, another vid is just icing on the cake, right?). 🤪
@MyGrowthRings
@MyGrowthRings 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question, and without putting words into Mr.Pete’s mouth, I suspect it has more to do with the small taper that connects the Jacob’s chuck to the arbor than the larger MT that connects the arbor to the machine. I hope Lyle (Mr.Pete) weighs in. Scott

Article in my guess Popular Mechanics January 1969 ~ 180 to ~184 title: Mill on a Drill Press by Kenneth b. Littlefield Is for a chuck that is mounted by a press taper fit. Which means it will loosen. The approach uses two ball bearing pressing against the body of the chuck. I would increase that to three so that forces in all directions can be handled. The fixture attaches to the column of the drill press. Another Popular Mechanics article employs a similar fixture attached to the column and a journal bearing and a fitting with shaft tha goes into a chuck, passes through the journal bearing and below is a wider section with a bore to fit a milling tool shank and a set screw to lock it in place. page 192

Great content as always. Two Questions: I see the screw heads are different. However, are the threads the same? If they are the same thread count, wouldn’t the cutters fit? What speed did you turn the Shopsmith up to for the plaining?
@alberttreado3713
@alberttreado3713 2 жыл бұрын
Drum, I don't want to step on Scott's toes, but I believe in the video, the older unites were SAE threats, the newer was metric. It would seem to me the diameters of the mounting holes in the cutters, if not threaded differently, would be different in size. At the speeds these things run, I wouldn't want to be close if it let loose for whatever reason...

I purchased a Jet drill press.. The chuck is a taper design. How do change this to a set screw design to prevent the chuck from coming out? I've only had one (a Harbor Freight drill press) chuck to come out of the drill press.

The fence that I made is similar to one that I produced years ago that included a dust chute. It works fairly well, but considering the chips it produces are relatively large, there’s not a lot of airborne dust. Scott
