As a 59 year old, devoted, life long surfer from Florida, that had the opportunity to surf with Kelly at a very young age at Sebastian Inlet when he was first starting his professional career, and the opportunity to surf with Barton in 1987 in Puerto Escondido. This was the most mesmerizing 2 hours of KZbin that I have ever watched. I loved how you just opened a door and let Kelly talk. I could sit and listen to you guys tell stories for hours on end. My only complaint would be that it was not long enough. Well done!!!

BL this is an incredible interview. You interviewing Kelly but he is interviewing you right back. The individual humility you both have and your respect for each other has been so inspiring. Kelly's memory and level of detail that he can describe is extraordinary, your memory is extraordinary too but he just relives every heat that he ever surfed and then he remembers his individual conversations and his emotions at the time. This has been a history lesson, a lesson in genuiness and transparency and dignity - you both should be proud of yourselves. Great job!

I was at the 89 Aloe Cup and watched the heat Kelly and Barton surfed vs each other. And it passed us all off that Kelly lost to BL.Kelly was surfing so good and BL caught his last wave and nailed it like 5 times backside and even then we thought Kelly won probably because we were blind because we wanted him to win so bad. So crazy before they even spoke about it that was the 1st thing I thought about before they brought it up. I have so many memories about Kelly surfing against him at ESA regionals and watching my buddy Lance beat him onetime in Juniors at the old ASP EAST CONTEST called the ALEC MAITLAND MEMORIAL in St.Augustine,my High schools team beating Cocoa beach high school at the NSSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1990. To his just dominating all of us as kids.He seemed so unbeatable we lost before our heats even started he was so hyped as a kid. What a true Legend not only in surfing but sports in general. And in my opinion he is the best athlete to ever live.To be at the top of his sport to the age of 52 is un heard of in any pro sport ever. Could you imagine MICHAEL JORDAN still in the NBA at 52? To win PIPE at 49 years and 11 months old is mindblowing. Kelly you used to be my competitor,to my favorite surfer,to my one of my 2 surf heros along Tom Curren. It's going to be hard watching the WSL contests and him not be apart of it.A true sad day for me seeing him walk away. Thank you Kelly for all the memories and inspiration you have given me over the years.Mahalo mate God Bless

Congratulations Mr. Lynch for the outstanding interview of Mr. Slater. Many interviewers interrupt their guests often with their own comments or questions while their guest is sharing keen insight into an event or adventure. You did an excellent job of letting Kelly finish his comments before prompting him to continue or to clarify something he stated, or to pivot in a different direction with a new question. Nice job of shining the spotlight on him, rather than yourself. You are an excellent interviewer. Well done, Barton! Congratulations Mr. Slater for an incredible career in our beloved sport of surfing. You were very articulate in your interview and you shared interesting facets of your life. What an incredible memory and ability to recall details of long ago. You have been an excellent ambassador for surfing and a true competitor with the heart of a lion. You will always be the King of Surfing and I foresee at least one more event win as a wildcard or at an invitational event. May God guide you as you begin the next phase of your life and may each endeavor be a success. To all young surfers who aspire to be professional surfers, please listen carefully to Kelly’s advice about avoiding drugs and alcohol. Keep your mind clear and focused on your goals. Spend as much time in the ocean as possible and take care of your body. Think carefully about the consequences of what you do when you are out of the water. The sooner you start living like a professional, the sooner you will become one. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” Proverbs 20:1

These two had so much input and influence on why pro surfing is where it is today. Barton for his advocacy and passion to see pro surfing recognized and accepted as a mainstream sport in the 80s Kelly for changing the mainstream conception that surfers were druggos, alcoholics and not professional. In the 90s he and the momentum generations clean living and professional approach helped pro surfing become what it is today. Both have a great moral compass and are great role models for being healthy and surfing into your twighlight years still ripping and charging solid waves.

The funny part is it’s true🤣😂 Let me see him dominate at pipe, sunset, and chopes and I’ll gain respect as a well rounded surfer. You’ll never see him at Waimea. This man here pushed himself to greatness in ALL areas of the sport.

@@mannmusica and the stinkbug stance hopping down the line for the predictable one maneuver is boring. So what it’s ‘technical’, I’ll take a full rail under the lip man-gouge into the oncoming closeout section any day.

Only someone who has had childhood family trauma like Kelly , can relate to the raw emotion he shows in this podcast . Even though he says he wouldn’t change anything , I think he would . Wow. They say the sign of a good interview is where you don't hear much from the interviewer. But this was so much better, a conversation between to mates. I felt all I needed to do was grab a drink and I'd be part of the conversation. Kelly seemed so relaxed which enabled the conversation to flow a side we don't often see. Nice one, really enjoyed that. Your setting the bar really high for yourself with this one!!
