As a 59 year old, devoted, life long surfer from Florida, that had the opportunity to surf with Kelly at a very young age at Sebastian Inlet when he was first starting his professional career, and the opportunity to surf with Barton in 1987 in Puerto Escondido. This was the most mesmerizing 2 hours of KZbin that I have ever watched. I loved how you just opened a door and let Kelly talk. I could sit and listen to you guys tell stories for hours on end. BL this is an incredible interview. You interviewing Kelly but he is interviewing you right back. The individual humility you both have and your respect for each other has been so inspiring. Kelly's memory and level of detail that he can describe is extraordinary, your memory is extraordinary too but he just relives every heat that he ever surfed and then he remembers his individual conversations and his emotions at the time. Congratulations Mr. Lynch for the outstanding interview of Mr. Slater. Many interviewers interrupt their guests often with their own comments or questions while their guest is sharing keen insight into an event or adventure. You did an excellent job of letting Kelly finish his comments before prompting him to continue or to clarify something he stated, or to pivot in a different direction with a new question. Nice job of shining the spotlight on him, rather than yourself. You are an excellent interviewer. Well done, Barton! Congratulations Mr. Slater for an incredible career in our beloved sport of surfing. You were very articulate in your interview and you shared interesting facets of your life. What an incredible memory and ability to recall details of long ago. You have been an excellent ambassador for surfing and a true competitor with the heart of a lion. You will always be the King of Surfing and I foresee at least one more event win as a wildcard or at an invitational event. May God guide you as you begin the next phase of your life and may each endeavor be a success. To all young surfers who aspire to be professional surfers, please listen carefully to Kelly’s advice about avoiding drugs and alcohol. Keep your mind clear and focused on your goals. Spend as much time in the ocean as possible and take care of your body. Think carefully about the consequences of what you do when you are out of the water. The sooner you start living like a professional, the sooner you will become one. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” Proverbs 20:1

Thats whats amazing in this interview is how honest Kelly is...at this point in his life he can really tell it like it is and not worry about pissing people off. If you are trying to be popular you give credit to maybe Derek Ho or Jerry Lopez but for at least a decade with his 360 stalls super heavy barrels to massive el rollo nobody has ever surfed pipe better than Stewy. I might throw AI in there, and thats one thing i would have liked to hear more about in this interview because there is nothing that takes Kelly more out of his comfort zone than talking about the one guy who really had his number.

I was at the 89 Aloe Cup and watched the heat Kelly and Barton surfed vs each other. And it passed us all off that Kelly lost to BL.Kelly was surfing so good and BL caught his last wave and nailed it like 5 times backside and even then we thought Kelly won probably because we were blind because we wanted him to win so bad. So crazy before they even spoke about it that was the 1st thing I thought about before they brought it up. I have so many memories about Kelly surfing against him at ESA regionals and watching my buddy Lance beat him onetime in Juniors at the old ASP EAST CONTEST called the ALEC MAITLAND MEMORIAL in St.Augustine,my High schools team beating Cocoa beach high school at the NSSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1990. To his just dominating all of us as kids.He seemed so unbeatable we lost before our heats even started he was so hyped as a kid. What a true Legend not only in surfing but sports in general. And in my opinion he is the best athlete to ever live.To be at the top of his sport to the age of 52 is un heard of in any pro sport ever. Could you imagine MICHAEL JORDAN still in the NBA at 52? To win PIPE at 49 years and 11 months old is mindblowing. Kelly you used to be my competitor,to my favorite surfer,to my one of my 2 surf heros along Tom Curren. Great interview BL, your style really brought out the best in you both. Prob the coolest interview w Kelly ever. Many could learn by your honesty and lack of compromise... Non-conformity is the best conformity 🤙🏼

Such an inspiration to my life. Saw him a few times over the years (winning his 11th was memorable) but only personally talked to him once, the 1st contest at Surf Ranch, just thanked him for creating it, he was gracious. Same age with a lot of similarities, unfortunately for me, I'm not as good a surfer, golfer, musician, pretty much everything. Thank you Kelly, cheers, good on ya!

What an amazing interview. Barton brings out the best in people. What an incredible human being Kelly is. I’ve clipped about 3 minutes from @1:52:00 and shared with close friends. Kelly’s perspective on how we view instances in our live is exactly how we should all learn to look at life. Always keep an open heart and create the reality for the universe give to us the lessons that we need to grow and be grateful for them
