Whoever originally 'legged this - the world owes you a great debt. Not only is it a blistering set by the Roses, but it is a snapshot of British youth-culture on a particular day, the zenith of a whole "movement". If the person who snuck in their recorder had not done so - we may not be able to hear this now.
@mikemoostermoo9 жыл бұрын
It was my mate who recorded this. He definitely didn't know at the time he would have the only full recorded set of the gig. I can tell you it was recorded on a black Sony Pro Walkman, very expensive piece of equipment for the time which he risked having confiscated if he'd have been caught 'smuggling' it in, and I think it was an external wide angled mic that was attached. It was recorded down at the front on the left hand side of the stage.

Thanks so much to whoever snuck in a recorder. Had completely forgotten the fireworks after the set. In fact, I’d forgotten almost everything except the gorgeous weather that day, just before the 1990 World Cup. I found this after watching Mat Whitecross’ ‘Spike Island’, a fictional take on the day that nailed the celebratory mood perfectly. Recommended.

This is the one concert I am gutted at missing. I listened to Stone Roses as an impressionable teenager in Newry (NI) back in 1989 and they were just fucking amazing. So different from anything I could hear locally. My mates laughed at me for buying the CD ( because that was big news on it's own!). 31 years on and this still makes me smile. IATR is now my cremation song. I really don't give a shit what else they play after I hit that firey hole.

What a day ! what I remember about it,(of my face on acid) we turned up with no tickets, you couldn't get near so we ended up walking down this canal for ages till we found a bridge that took us onto marshland that led us eventually led us to a big fence with security at the back of the crowd, other people were there, not many. A gang of nutters turned up and we all charged at the fence and brought it down, result, we all got in for fuck all !!

You’re right, bands and moments like this are incredibly rare. The very early sixties was probably amazing with the Beatles and the Stones, I always hated the fact that the Sex Pistols happened before I was old enough to go to gigs but the Madchester scene happened when I was 18/19 so at least I got to see the Stone Roses and most of the other big players live.

A bbc tv crew showed up on the day but gareth evans (the bands manager) demanded a stupid amount of money for them to record the gig. The roses didn’t want to be recorded anyway as they thought the event would be a disaster which was partially true.

@@TommyTunes1989 yeah same haha, i can only think of the fact that they were exhausted as they’d been out the night before and they felt they wouldn’t be up to there standards.
