El Paso BBQ and the gas station are both on Ventura, supposedly there were a lot of locations on Ventura. There's a Michael's on Ventura in Encino, and it looks like it could have been the one in the movie (large parking lot); right next to the Liquor World.

he's not a hippie. he's a metalhead stoner (the character he's playing anyway). I don't know the actor from anything else, but his performance as Joe in this movie was great, everybody in the film was.
