Passion fueled actions of any kind commonly come on like a storm, and give way to calm reflection shortly afterwards.

Really great analysis! I'm a Literature teacher, and my students and I just discussed "The Storm" and "The Story of an Hour." We also watched your video, and we're actually composing this comment in class together right now. In our class discussion, we identified a few things we found interesting. We really learned a lot from your conversation about the chinaberry tree. We discussed how the destruction of the tree might represent the destruction of overbearing rational intellect in the heat of passion. Also maybe the removal of morals. This plays into Chopin's ideas about marriage in general, especially the roles and expectations of the woman. We also found it weird that multiple people in the classroom saw the storm as different symbols: one saw it as society, another saw it as a trial from God, another saw it as pure expression of emotion, and I kind of contended that it was a blessing from Mother Nature. So yeah, lots of potential for interpretation there! We also feel as a class that Chopin feels empathy toward her main characters and doesn't judge them, perhaps because she is drawing from her own experience or from her own emotional memories. Ultimately, she leaves it up to the reader to do the judging or not. Thanks for introducing a great prompt into our discussion!

Hello to both the teacher and the class. I'm so glad you all had a fruitful discussion (pun intended). Chopin was ahead of her time and surely had no expectations that over a hundred years later it could still bring us all together. Good luck with future assignments! I'd love to hear more from you all if you should read similar stories again the future!

Fantastic analysis! I love how you two discussed the potential symbolism of the storm. I'm not very knowledgable about symbols in literature, but I did recently learn that water was Biblically associated with the feminine and chaos. I find it interesting the characters just carried on normally once the storm passed. Thanks!

Indeed! Crazy to believe particularly at the time when it was written.

Great discussion! I enjoyed The Awakening, but I’d never read this one. I agree that Chopin was giving voice to things that were always simmering below the surface. Of course social norms and structures of the day had to be maintained and I’m sure some individuals paid the price with their happiness.

Thank you for introducing this author and story. I am planning a unit on women writers, so she will take her place with Virginia Woolf. I also really enjoyed Spring break - the book finally arrived and I will somehow devise a unit of study for next year using this story. You are both such an inspiration to me and by extensionn, to my students!

I was wondering how this story got published in the 19th century only to learn from this video that it wasn't. Thanks for the info! Very risqué for the time. 6.5/10

My view of the story is that women have a right to happiness. Every woman might have a different idea of happiness. Clarisse was very happy with her friends at the beach without her husband. Calixta felt she needed a passionate encounter. Both experiences were fleeting and both women were happy in their ‘real lives.’ Calyx is a type of lily which brings up more discussion. Just one woman’s opinion!! Deb

I have read a lot of her stories, but don't remember this one. "A religious 50 Shades of Gray." Out of the context of this video, it would have been fun to have tried to guess what this sentence was referring to.😅

I think you are underestimating the value of the story. The symbols go beyond the chinaberry tree, though I think that was an interesting observation by you all. The horse, Alcee lives up the hill, he is Creole, he had gone away for a long time before this story takes place, his wife and children are away during this hot summer period. All of these suggest that there is a powerful social status and wealth difference between Calixta and Alcee. Bobinot and Bibi walk because they cannot afford a horse. The shrimp,l a gift from Bobinot to defuse his wife's anticipated annoyance at him for coming home muddy, is a bribe to mollify her. So Alcee is associated with the horse, Bobinot with the shrimp. Think of the symbolism of those two animals from a sexual point of view. Which seems more virile? Alcee represents a romantic ideal. Also, don't dismiss the importance of "At the 'Cadian Ball." Many years earlier Alcee and Calixta had a hope for romance but it was dashed because Alcee understood their class difference would always be a barrier. In this story, there is no intent for romance. It is nature that makes that happen. Alcee and Calixta are experiencing Natural Love. Do you know what is unnatural? To deny one's true emotions. Chopin, though having been married and widowed, also understood desire. Marriage is a lifelong commitment to one other person. If one marries at a young age, that person is making a commitment on behalf of a person who will not be the same 10, 20, or more years later. Is that natural, that one should be compelled to stay in a relationship that may have evolved away from its original design? I think Chopin is saying that marriage itslef is an unatural act as it denies the participants the freedom to be who they truly are both today and tomorrow.

I took a much simpler message away from this story: what they don't know won't hurt them. Everyone in the story is on some level successfully covering up something they don't want everyone to know in order to maintain appearances and make everyone happy. The delicate balance of everyone getting away with everything brings everyone happiness in the end. Ignorance is bliss
