That auction strategy works, I can attest to it! Years ago when I was trading cars I used to buys cars often from auctions. Once this car came along which I knew would get a lot of interest and of course the auctioneer started the bidding low, so I did the same put people into shock and not give them time to think and bid my highest price right away, the whole room went silent and after few seconds I hear the auctioneer saying going once going twice sold!

Offhand, David, I'd say that Lusso was a 250-300 smile per hour car! As to the color- Ferraris, all Ferraris, look good in one of two colors; Red as we all know and ......yellow! Some of the others are nice but this was Enzo's idea I believe. Just awesome- cold chills everytime you shifted it. Your comments about how close and intimate a driving experience it is was spot on- luxe Ferraris are not something I've had much opportunity with but Alfas and Maseratis from that era are much the same- engaging and demanding. question not a criticism - do you need to blip the throttle during upshifts? Thought that was only needed for downshifting
@johnhenne370
@johnhenne370 3 жыл бұрын
If you are not shifting quickly, while in neutral (clutch engaged) the RPMs will drop to 0 eventually. In order to have a smooth shift to the next gear, you need to apply enough gas to have the transmission match what the RPMs should be in the next gear. For example, if you are at 5k rpm in 3rd gear going 75 mph and want to shift to 4th gear, which is at 3k rpm at 75mph, in order to have a smooth shift, you will want to be at 3k rpm when you release the clutch in 4th. Say you let the rpms drop to 1k during the shift and release the clutch in 4th, the car is going to jerk because your rpms don't match what the car would be doing at that speed.

@@johnhenne370 thanks John, I had the same question so went “trolling” through the comments to see if it was addressed. Definitely keep in mind. Thanks for the question Thanos!
@pereldh5741
@pereldh5741 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnhenne370 However, you’d have to be REALLY slow shifting for this to occur. Right? Like when you drive your manual car. Even in my Z4M (which has a really light flywheel) the revs never fall faster than I shift (and the Z4M shift is not the greatest). I ONLY have manual cars and they only need blips on downshift, never heard or seen ANYONE do it upshifting. Even in an old Ferrari
@johnhenne370
@johnhenne370 3 жыл бұрын
@@pereldh5741 That is correct. Otherwise you can time the shift so that you release the clutch at the correct RPM and the engine will match the transmission. Remember though, in these old Ferraris without synchros you are double clutching to shift, so it is slower than with a modern manual car, but you can still do it quick enough to not require any throttle to match. That said, I know people who will apply the correct amount of throttle so that as the RPMs are dropping, if the shift does take too long, the RPM decrease stops at the correct value and never goes lower. For example, if you are upshifting and are currently at 5k RPM and the next gear equivalent is 3k RPM, while in neutral you can apply enough throttle so that nothing occurs from 5k until 3k, but as soon as you hit 3k, that is where your engine RPMs stay. The result is, you are still timing the shift so that you are in the next gear at 3k RPM, but have the engine spinning at that RPM regardless of any circumstance. But you are correct, in general, no additional throttle is needed when upshifting as you are moving to a lower RPM. Downshifting requires a rev match because you are moving up in RPM, which is the opposite of what vehicle is doing while in neutral.

since 1984 I've used a snake oil named Pro Blend. I use it transmissions, smooths out the shift. Used it in wet clutches in 500cc MX bikes, my sons race bikes: Makes shifting easier, doesn't effect clutch grip. Use it in pre mix. And in engine oil. If even makes positraction work better. Took the clutch chatter off the posi in my 1959 Corvette, going around turns was this common "tick tick" old chevy posi's have....and it went away with Pro Blend. Had to drive my truck 150 miles and in the mountains with no oil! Oil went into the radiator.....But the engine ran and turned off and on like it was nothing! So if you have old Synchro's......

I'm pretty sure I saw this car (how many of them in this livery would exist?) show up at Caffeine & Octane once in Atlanta 8-10 years ago when it was a nomadic show looking for a new home and held once or twice in a grungy parking lot in Roswell GA. At the time I had no idea of this car's history. I never knew that a Lusso would be set up for competition, and clearly I had no idea of it's value! Glad to know it's in good hands.
