Wow, Hannah, I really enjoyed hearing you tell the story behind the Birkin bag! It’s amazing how such a simple idea turned into a fashion legend. You captured Jane Birkin’s sense of humor and approach to life so well. Thanks for sharing this fascinating piece of history!

Amazing Hannah! Thanks for showing these footage with Jane’s explanations on the bag. And thanks as a French person, for explaining who she was. For us, she was much more than a bag, and I found it kind of sad that the bag was the only thing international media talked about when she passed away. She was incredibly beautiful (an effortless natural beauty icon), a singer with the most delicate voice, and for French people also part of a very iconic couple with Serge Gainsbourg as his muse and ex-wife.

Hopefully Jane’s association with the bag will only inspire future generations to learn about what kind of incredible woman she was! 💕

I have watched hundreds of bag YT and this is, by far, my favorite one EVER! This has inspired me to BUY LESS QUANTITY, but great quality pieces, and wear them with abandon. The reason we baby the bags is for resale potential value. I'm never reselling my special bags. I'm going to gift them to my closest family and friends ONLY, to pass on the story of the joy along with the story of how much I've loved, used and taken such joy in the piece and hope they do as well. I just did this with one LV. I'm going to do it more now. BTW, despite not babying the bags I have, I do take very good care of my bags with occasional cleaning and storing properly, which I didn't used to do.

Yeah me neither. I will never sell my bags. And even though my fiancé is totally not materialistic and doesn’t really support people who buy such expensive items, he said to me once after I told him I should sell some of my bags because I was dealing with some money issues… he said I should never sell them because he knows how much joy they bring to me. He knows that I respect and value things I have. Just like I respect food on my table. I’m not blindly buying everything just because it’s designer. I have a small collection of bags I enjoy and find beautiful and he respects that and that’s why I love him so much. ❤❤❤ Even though he doesn’t understand something I do he still respects it because he loves and trusts me. 😊 He rather sends me money than see me sell my precious babies that are my bags now, because I don’t have children of my own yet. Haha he’s great I know. So I know what you mean - why sell something you went through the struggle of getting it? I buy only what I absolutely love and I’m loyal to it. To my man, to my friends, to my hobbies, to my things… I’m loyal and respectful. But I’ve seen so many people just collecting stuff just to have it. And they fell into viscous trap of buying and selling just to rebuy and resell all over again. 😅

I absolutely LOVED this video!!! Although I don't own a Birkin, I appreciate its classic silhouette and love the story behind it even more. I recently added a bag that has a very similar style and have intentionally decided I want to enjoy this bag as Jane enjoyed hers without being to precious with it, as I also tend to be with my other bags. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for posting this! I really loved getting to know Jane, and now I have a better appreciation for the spirit of the woman who this bag is named for. IMHO, Jane's style was very bohemian, strong, beautiful, humble, thoughtful, kind, compassionate and very down-to-earth. I feel that is what the Birkin bag should represent and not the bougie attitude it has today. The bag is meant to be used, like any leather bag. The bag is on a journey the moment it is purchased and is meant to live this journey to see and experience things its carrier takes it to. It's like a very dear friend who is with you no matter what and will be there to the very end. It fails its maker's intent when it is wrapped up in a closet or on a shelf collecting dust. Then maybe at that very worn end of its journey, it has earned its place to retire in cotton bags and tissue paper.

All of France was very sad when she passed. Her funerals were broadcast on tv so we could all follow it if we wished. She was so much more than that bag (that she designed herself, I didn’t know that !), she was an amazing singer (forever associated with Gainsbourg) and actress and all around good person. I miss her.

Great video! I've had a Birkin 35 (special order) in Taurillon Clemence leather for 8 years. This bag is a workhorse, I've taken it with me to travel, in trains, planes, cars, metros. No organizer in mine, no twillys around the handles. I don't put it on the floor but I am using it as it should be used : as a BAG!!!. It is still in almost perfect condition and when it won't be anymore I will just take to the Hermes spa. If you really love your bags, then use them.

I’ve actually been saying for awhile that Jane Birkin’s basket bag didn’t fall off in that airplane ride because her basket bag was destroyed by her then partner Jacques Doillon. Meaning she wasn’t using it in the first place. She gave an interview with Man Repeller (you can google it) and she talks about how he didn’t like her basket bag feeling “gimmicky” so in an argument he ran it over with his car just before her flight. So she was basically carrying her items in a sack… that’s likely why her agenda fell out. Her basket bag has always been trusty and never broke until it was deliberately ruined by her ex.
@jdivina154 ай бұрын
PS. Jane’s other and more famous ex, Serge Gainsbourg had the HAC bag, there’s even pictures of Jane and Serge while he carried that bag in airports That’s likely why Jane sketched out the Birkin bag based off on the HAC. In the Man repeller interview, she called Serge’s bag his “travel bag” which is likely the HAC.

This was a lovely wake up Sunday. Yes, it's crazy that we baby our bags. I own boutique purchased luxury bags, and have become more comfortable buying on the second hand market because I am less precious with them. Why? You know how we baby our new car until it gets its first scratch? A formerly loved bag has a scratch, and so I, for whatever reason, feel a little less precious with them. All in all: I am not a collector who buys just to sell in future. So I should make good use out of my bags.
@hellocatwalkcity4 ай бұрын
Absolutely, they are meant to be enjoyed, right? And I know what you mean about buying preloved/secondhand. It just feels less precious when you know someone else has already worn/used/enjoyed it before you. xx

I am on Jane’s side 🤗 it is a bag for using! Not for praying 😅 I am so happy to use all my luxury bags, I feel how useful these items, I spent quiet a lot of money on them and I feel these money 😅😅😅 cost=use . Jane was practical and this bag answers her requests.

Interesting, I had never heard the agenda part of the story. Thanks for sharing that! She probably didn’t baby hers because she got hers for free plus Hermes paid royalties for the use of her name, whereas we pay a small fortune for ours. She also asked Hermes to remove her name from the croc bags because of animal cruelty.
