Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s 1968 US national anthem protest, explained.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
The image of sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City is an enduring image of silent protest. But the key to understanding it goes beyond the black-gloved fists. All three medal winners, including silver medalist Peter Norman of Australia, wore buttons that read “Olympic Project for Human Rights.” The Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) was a coalition of prominent athletes formed in 1967 that threatened to boycott participating in the upcoming Olympic games, in order to draw attention to systemic racism in the United States. The group, led by professor Harry Edwards, ultimately voted to compete in the games and hold their demonstrations there, which led to the now-iconic display on the medal stand following the men’s 200-meter final. This act got Smith and Carlos kicked off the team, but left a lasting legacy on making political statements through sport.

I know this is very important to talk about but I also notice the lack of information about this year and its Olympic games, why am I saying this? because in that year there were also protests by Mexicans where the government tried to silence them by disappearing students and killing them so that they did not interfere in this great world event, 1968 was a horrible year and those Olympic games should never have been done since it served as smokescreen to the government to appease the student protests in Mexico, MexicanLivesMattersToo. I know that this is not the main topic of the video but it is very important to mention it, since this terrible tragedy is always minimized because of this other event that occurred at the same year. Just complementing the information.

Today, efforts to put institutional racism from the missing parts of U.S. history education including the 1619 Project will almost certainly be discouraged and challenged for being "political". Tom Cotton said schools would lose federal funding if the oppression and suffering of millions of innocent men, women and children was given the analysis it properly deserved. "invoke them"? not sure you used the right word there .. "complaining about BLM" ? BLM has dove of the peaceful cliff into something much different . @harboco
@harboco 4 жыл бұрын
fok he said “conservatives”, not “Republican” that’s a very clear distinction. And you’d learn that in any basic comparative politics class. Conservatives want to conserve the way things are, they will typically push back against progress because they like the way things are. Modern Republicans are conservative. Lincoln was not a conservative he was a liberal who supported the federal government and advocated for social progress. The Democratic Party during the civil war and well into the 60s was a much more conservative party, specifically southern Democrats aka the “Dixiecrats”. Please take a few poli sci and American history courses, they’ll be very eye opening for you. But you’re right about the two party system destroying America, because that’s what both parties want, it suits their interests.

I honestly can't watch the Olympics anymore after learning about how they treat the athletes and communities they rely on. Athletes can't live off a win, the hosting cities suffer greatly. There are so many things wrong with it, and the Olympic committee. Were it not for the sportsmanship and the solidarity often arising out of it I'd be fully opposed to them (instead of just boycotting them).

An inaccurate generalization, as if the only people complaining about Colin Kaepernick were "older" people, SMH! I'm 70, which made me 18 during the time of the '68 Olympics, I not only remember this event but the reasons for it. I know the details of most civil rights events, including those which occurred before I was born. I doubt most young people today even know who Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner were!

How exactly do you propose they stop racism if the general public doesn't acknowledge it as even existing. They have no power except democratic power. Do you think these issues will be solved if they just ask? Because that's kinda whats been happening since slavery. FYI change didn't come from asking nicely

Since I have learnt about this iconic pic nearly 5 years ago when ever I see or hear about it ....it simply gives me goosebumps ..... How can someone do something so big at such a huge stage??? That needs courage , will and more importantly a cause ....the cause that the problems they were having was even bigger than anything and sadly are today also . As a human being I am proud on these men bcz standing with right in a war b/w right and wrong is what makes us humen. Humen should keep asking for rights of equality even if we have to fight (not literally fight but making then understand , protesting etc ) other humen . Proud.
