It's really sad that Wasim Akram, who should have a statue of him in a wax museum as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, to have played the game, is continuously facing inquiries about fixing controversies. Sad that greed got the best of him and he got mixed up in this. If it was the Aussies or Eng who had a player who had done such a thing, it would quietly be swept under the carpet. Wasim Akram and his friends fixed the match. Rained overnight in London Akram wins toss and elects to bat first. Clearly lost the match deliberately. Best Pakistan one day side ever. Shame on cheats. Just imagine if Akram chose to bowl first on this wicket with Pakistan bowling? Australia would have struggled to get 150. Pakistan would have won the world Cup easily.

Good point however who bats first in wet conditions? In fairness to Saurav they lost because Ponying played the best one day innings of his career and when threat happens then the toss is irrelevant just like in 92 semi final Inzi played the best one day if not caterer innings. Javed Miandad resigned a few weeks before the 99 World Cup started as he suspected match fixing in Sharjah a few months earlier and suspected foul play ( it’s all on the internet from Javed himself). The fact is batting first on a seaming wicket was reckless at least and with careful analysis it was most likely fixed. Even the PCB chairman from 1999 Khalid Mahmoud suspects 3 games from the 1999 World Cup tournament featuring Pakistan as suspicious

Agreed. After the 99 loss, I was convinced that was it for Pakistan. However, a large part of 90's was openers throwing their wickets cheaply, only to be rescued by Inzamam, Saqlain, Moin Khan at the depth. That's perhaps one of the only areas I'd give Inzi the edge over Tendulkar. Apples and oranges because Inzi almost always played crisis knocks in the late middle order. Our 96 team were solid players and by 99 we had playing legends and upcoming stars. Since then we've had semi-capable players but you need a lot more than that. An analogy in a beautiful tragedy- even Ronaldo couldn't win a trophy for Portugal. The last Pakistan match I watched was the world cup game where Rahat Ali dropped Shane Watson off of Wahab Riaz. Since then I know what's going on by following Junaid Akram, Arslan Naseer, etc.; only because I like their content and in Arslan's case, the delivery. I'm not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

In those conditions, even Don Bradman and Viv Richards would have struggled. The decision of batting first had no basis, absolutely worst decision. Aamer Sohail mentioned in one of his videos that someone (i think Saleem Malik) told him that according to Wasim Akram this was the advice by Imran Khan. And I think if there was no fixing involved, this can be the only understandable reason. Imran Khan was the only one who could have that influence on Wasim Akram.

Too many wrong information. 1. Waqar Younis played only one match in that world cup (against Bangladesh). So he did not contribute in that world cup 2. Aamir Sohail was not part of 1999 World Cup squad. 3. Saleem Malik only played 4 matches and scored 54 runs. So he could not contribute in that world cup.

Australia was the better team in 1999 and SriLanka was the favorite in 1996. Even if Pakistan won the quarter final in 1996 against India, Pakistan would have lost to Sri Lanka which was the team in form. In 1999 Australia was a very strong side and Pakistan batted poorly. Justice Qayyum report found nothing, only Ata ur Rehman admitted to perjury. Only Ata's punishment was legally valid. Other recommendations by justice Qayyum were legally null and void because they were baseless and without proof.

Being an Akram fan I'd hate to believe that he fixed the 96/99 matches. I was born in 85. For me and perhaps my generation, Akram was our Imran Khan. Winning the cup would put him in a place greater than the sum of his achievements and capabilities. Yet I don't understand what could coax someone into throwing a final that would put him at par (in some ways), if not better than Khan. It couldn't have been that much money because he lives a reasonable (for someone who may have got enough to throw everything I mentioned above) life. Surely I'm missing something. It's not adding up. Would appreciate an explanation as to why someone would do this; unless of course he has had a serious personal vendetta against Pakistan, PCB, or someone worth sacrificing do much got.
