Synopsis:
His name is synonymous with treason, but this cinematic documentary shows that Benedict Arnold's heroic contributions to American Independence far outweigh his later change of allegiance.
Benedict Arnold is one of the most notorious American traitors. New facts and never before presented material illuminate his heroic contributions to the American Revolution and provide insights to the reasons for his later change of allegiance. Political and personal upheavals shaping the founding are revealed through Arnold's experiences. For the crucial first three years of the Revolution Arnold's battlefield heroics foil British invasions. Then his idealism is shattered by self-serving political and military leaders. He feels betrayed by the cause he had joined for the principles of an egalitarian society. Instead he encountered an arbitrary system of personal favoritism and cronyism. He had lived up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence while others had not. He concludes the Revolution had taken a bad turn and Americans would be better off under British rule.

Would have been considered one of the greatest of American generals of “All Time” if he would have just died at Saratoga

Not sure if you’re familiar with Marine LTC Stuart Scheller, but Gen Arnold was maligned by politics and bureaucracy, certainly not by lack of duty. Very similar to LTC Scheller’s plight…. Very sad testament…

I call myself a history nerd, but I learned new things from this! And I LOVE it. I like how they point out that Benedict wasn’t just acting like a spoiled brat, but that he also was probably considering his social status in the context of his children’s present and future lives! A small-time officer can’t earn, can’t schmooze, can’t marry kids off to safe, secure matches that will add to the prestige of his name - that he’s been trying like hell to refurbish after his dad’s mess.

20 years ago in American history, a test question: Who was the greatest hero of the Revolutionary War? My answer was General Arnold. After explaining to my teacher why I answered the way I did. He changed the answer from General Washington to both Washington and Arnold.

I’ve always thought that Arnold was driven to do what he did. ( A woman and the stupidity of Congress) not that I excuse him but at least understand why he did it!

His name is forbidden to be carved in stone and his image as well. They removed the headstones of his entire family in Connecticut to adhere to this. At saratoga battlefield there is a statue of a leg dedicated only to "The hero of Saratoga" . Nearby is a wood plaque explaining Arnolds heroism that day. The wood adhering to the Damatio Memorea. Its the only case in The US of a traitor suffering such a fate. He is the only example in history of a traitor so crucial to the victory of the country he betrayed and so completely unimpressive to the country he betrayed for. It wasnt lost on the british that he turned for money after essentially putting a nail in the coffin of british ambitions at saratoga, or that he was responsible for the capture and wxecution of Major Andre, a man loved by both sides though in the service of the crown and unlike Arnold, willing to give all for The Empire he served. Some say forgive him, enough time has passed. Tell Andre that. Like judas, Arnold betrayed his master for silver. His evil wife put on a show for washington but we now know she gradually walked arnold into the plot and deserved to hang as much if not more. Andre would have been exchanged for arnold and arnold would have had his neck stretched in andres place. The british probably regret letting a good man die for such a scoundrel.

I don't buy the premise here that Arnold was without blame or driven to it. Certainly he wasn't always treated right but betrayal for personal gain is traitorous. What is more he was doing it in secret. Hardly the actions of someone who was doing it out of virtuous motives.

Do you think your comment is so intellectually impressive that you'll change people's minds into voting the way you tell them to? Do you honestly not see how utterly foolish you appear???

The truth is that the Colonies were treated well by England, there was a group or groups who did not want to be obligated and ruled by a government, they wanted their own, and that's what caused the war.....We started it !
