The Story of 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)' by Eiffel 65

When Eiffel 65 released 'Blue (Da Ba Dee),' it was a flop. They sold around 200 records, shrugged it off as a loss, and forgot about it. But in a wild turn of events, the track got picked up by a small local station before getting airplay on one of the biggest radio stations in Italy-and within days, it was steamrolling its way to becoming one of the biggest hits of the late 1990s, taking the electronic music group touring around the world as their song shot up the charts.
We met up with the members of Eiffel 65-Jeffrey Jey, Maurizio “Maury” Lobina, and Gabry Ponte-to find out the origin story behind "Blue," and hear what it was like to become international superstars in the blink of an eye.

What's I find fascinating is the way that they basically bumped into each other for a short moment in time. That window in time combined their talents and skills into a gem of a song; and the ride it took them on was incredible. I love that serendipity. It's hard for strangers to capture lightning in a bottle, and there's no shame in saying "We had different musical ambitions, and it's ok." They brought so much joy to people all over the world with just one song is such an accomplishment for a bunch of dudes who were just jammin' and riffing off each other.

A memory of this song I’ll never forget: I was in elementary school (born in ‘90) and my bus was just pulling into school in the morning for drop off. This song comes on the radio. The entire bus load of kids-were talking 30-40 kids-was singing along to this song. Every single kid. That’s how big of a deal this song was back in the day. No one could resist it, and no one tried. Shout out to Eiffel 65. My mother bought Euro Pop for me in 2000 when I was 8 years old. Looking back, I had no idea what the genre of music was, but it was something that was completely different then was on the radio in America at the time. Fast forward to 2010, I picked up Hardstyle and techno. Again, nothing like it in America. Now I look back on those days and I smile. Great times. I still listen to some Hardstyle every now and then. My daughter is a huge EDM fan now. She loves Techno. I played her some tracks from Euro Pop and she loved them. It made me smile. The music I listened too and loved as a child is now the same music my daughter listens to. So special

If you think about what the “dance” music actually is today, dance ‘90 looks like gold compared to it. That said, Eiffel 65 made a piece of art with Blue and that song (along with a few others of those years) will be never forgotten. It was such an important part of my childhood. So many amazing memories rush to my mind as soon as I hear the first couple of notes of the melody. That is exactly what good music is, that is exactly what art is. Thank you Eiffel!

I was a homeless 13 year old, living in an abandoned motel when this song came out. I was bullied a lot during that time too; and music was my only escape. I knew I wanted to do something in music when I grew up, but I wasn't sure. I listened to this track and a lot of tracks by Thievery Corporation. I was bullied for my music choices too; and I was soooo poor. But one thing I could afford was this single. It was like $12. I had a Discman I got for Christmas 2 years before that, and I played the HELL out of this single. I didn't actually see the music video until I was about 23 years old. Now I'm a former DJ who still goes bananas when this comes on. Thank you for keeping me happy and safe while I SURVIVED poverty. :)

Blue was a formative song for me in my childhood. I connected with the song because I felt like the music was saying words that I could not articulate. It was as if someone was singing for me, and because of that, I could express myself when I heard this song. I bought all the music that Eiffel 65 and Bloom 06 made because that unique sound was my sound. It was me, and because I loved it, I felt happiness in myself. I'm 38 and it's not so common to see italian music to be known outside our country. Eiffel 65 and some other italian dance music artists made it possible. Gabry was basically told: you didn’t WRITE anything, yet is the one that literally built the architecture of the song. Eiffel 65 also had a side projects (sans Gabry) called Bloom 06 which also had some cool dance tracks. When that did not play out, it seemed natural to reassume the E65 name. Thanks Vice for covering this, man it’s purely nostalgic for me and took me back to the early 2000’s when trance, dance and euro pop music was truly at global peak.

We'd recently got married and in the B & B where we spent our honeymoon, this song was always floating out of the kitchen area on the radio every morning, without fail. Whichever station they listened to REALLY liked this song lol, it was a staple, every morning. No other songs stick out in my memory of those mornings, apart from this one. All these years later, still married to the same guy, now with a 19 year old son, and every time I hear this song I am transported back in time to being a newlywed couple again. I have a really fond affection for this song. I also feel a bit old reading most of the comments saying that they were in school when this song came out lol!

It's great to see these "behind the music" for these 1 hit wonder songs I grew up with especially the European ones. I remember always wondering: where did this come from, who are these people, what is their story? And back then, it wasn't easy to find out at all. So I really find these so enjoyable as a kid who lived on VH1 and MTV lol April 1999, the end of 8th grade... EVERYONE LOVED THIS SONG, you couldn't get away from it. I still love it and have listened to it many times after all these years 😁 My 13yo daughter started singing the song one day and I started singing along with them and they're like "you know this song??" Man, being a 90's kid this song is one of my earliest memories of music, this along with Cher's "Believe" which I heard around the same time (and funnily enough also somewhat inspired this song). I remember an evening sometime in '99 I was scared of going to the bathroom alone in the night but because I had heard this song and fallen in love with it, I would just sing it out loud to overcome my fear while walking through the kitchen to the bathroom to the amusement of my family who could hear 6 year old me crying my heart out singing "I'm blue, daba dee. daba die!" while taking a leak. Haha, those were the best of times and a really fun memory I have thanks to Eiffel 65. God bless them.

I love the background story, and the fact that it was such a random hit. As a music producer in the late 1990's, it was an amazing time in the world of electronic music production and distribution...
