I met Donald Adams in a bar in Ottawa while D'Oyly Carte were on tour. I bought him a quart of Carlsberg and he spent over an hour regaling me with tales of his time with that famous company. I was 16 at the time, not a common age for Savoyards, but he was very kind and gracious. It was the experience of a lifetime !

@@steerpike1359 So lucky! I had always wanted to meet him and might have if he had made his scheduled Met Opera debut as Peter Quince in 'Midsummer Night's Dream'. Alas, he passed on some months before.

Thank you! Two giant and much missed legends of the G & S pantheon, and best of friends. Heart-warming to hear their charming, succinct and informed narration.

If a lot of other stuff was not left out, this would have gone on for several hours but would still be intensely interesting.

Thomas Round's natural speaking voice is how I imagined that of John Reed sounding. 0:36 I also love his analogy of the gondolier brothers, in regards to having trouble separating Gil and Sully as individuals with their own accomplishments. 1:30 Dang... 25 quid was a lot of money back then, lol. 25:56 LOL Did Thomas Round just transform into Ringo Starr? "Were you not to Yoko plighted, I would gladly jam with you!"

0:20 The "unmistakeable Sullivan" melody used in "Pirates of Penzance" is originally Verdi’s 'Anvil Chorus' from Il trovatore.

@@MrCuddlyable3 Never picked that up, thank you! I did figure out years ago that both 'Pinafore' and 'Trovatore' open with an identical timpani roll, and of course a theme in both works is babies switched soon after birth by a mezzo. You may notice differences, though.

@@kennethwayne6857 You may enjoy contrasting Lehár's Merry Widow "Vilja leid" with Sweet Rose Maybud's "If Somebody There Chanced to be" in G&S "Ruddigore". Oh and the way to start a theatrical piece with a drum is how they do it in Carné's 1945 film "Les Enfants du Paradis".

@@MrCuddlyable3 I just might, thanks. And I'll have to get familiar with 'Les Enfants'.

I need to know why someone posting in Cyrillic is watching a G&S video. How did you get here?

I thought Frederick Sullivan died early in 1877 before the debut of The Sorcerer, not in 1875 at the time of Trial by Jury.
