Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

I've heard that during WW1 some generals were ignorant towards development of new rifles. For them, who probably had held one decades before the war, it was just a rifle. It fires, so what's the problem? Meanwhile the enemy had 5 round magzines while your men had to reload after three shots.

RIP George Rose. For those of you who don't know, the man moved to the Dominican Republic in his retirement, adopted a local boy, and was tortured and beaten to death by him and the boy's biological father barely five months later in order to get hold of Rose's estate which the boy was set to inherit. And the truly sad thing about all of this? No one knows where he is actually buried due to the disgusting state of the graveyard that the locals buried him in that looks more like a rubbish dump than a place of rest. What a tragic and needless death for such a talented man.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General, I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral, I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical; I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical, I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical, About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news, With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse. I'm very good at integral and differential calculus; I know the scientific names of beings animalculous: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's; I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox, I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus, In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous; I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies, I know the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes! Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore, And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform, And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin", When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin, When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at, And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat", When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery, When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery- In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy- You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a-gee. For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury, Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century; But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

I remember this was pretty much my song in high school, and I and a quartet who served as the chorus did a slightly different take on it. We were using Novello's score, which had no such direction, so we went in a different direction: he knew his rhymes were bad, but he (mischievously) went with them anyway, much to the chorus' chagrin (and their reaction was basically, "Really? Fine. You're the boss. We'll go with it"). Maybe not what Arthur & Sullivan intended, but that joke also landed.

With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse. With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse. I am very good at integral and differential calculus I know the scientific names of beings animalculus in short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral I am the very model of a modern major general All: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral he is the very model of a modern major general I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's; I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox, I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus, In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous; I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies, I know the croaking from the Frogs of Aristophanes! Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore, And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform, And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, He is the very model of a modern Major-General. In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin", When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin, When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at, And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat", When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery, When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery-- In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy, You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee. You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee. You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee. You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee. For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury, Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century; But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. This same cast and extraordinary performance of The Pirates of Penzance performed in the early 1980s in Los Angeles, a performance myself, my best friend (ultimately my lifetime partner and bride) enjoyed tremendously. I was never so pleased by any other production of a Gilbert and Sullivan musical. I am both surprised and again delighted to hear these voices of my past, including the talented Kevin Klein, the unforgettable Linda Ronstadt. The Modern Major General, whose names momentarily escapes me, was a special delight - I still don't know how he managed this most difficult lyric heavy miracle on stage! Enjoy.

“You know, this song is kinda dated. It's supposed to be MODERN major-general. I'm gonna add a new verse. I can fire at a target and hit it at least half the time or graph out an electron path while using only numbers prime I calculate the fall rate of a bullet shot a thousand yards I perforate the thick heads of a hundred military guards. I can make a simulation of an atom bomb and build one too Or flank a dozen men and ambush ten of them right out of the blue From SMGs to RPGs, I carry quite an arsenal And skip around a war zone like a subatomic particle. Every soldier out here wants to kill me for my curiosity I wage war on the whole damn world because of my tenacity In matters combat tactical and physics theoretical I am the very model of a modern Major-General! Alright, no one else is even trying to sing along, I quit.” -Gordon Freeman

You miss the point. The guy doesn't actually know anything about modern warfare. It's the whole point of the song. I mean, the last lines are: "For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury, Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;"

@@craigstaley352 Its a reference to the brilliant "Freeman's mind" series here on youtube. He plays through the original half life role playing as a near insane, psychopathic, narcissistic version of Gordon Freeman. It's very funny and well done. He sings this song and adds the extra verse while dodging and shooting marines like a madman

"When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery. In short when I've (I have) a smattering of elemental strategy" He knows more about vegetables, animals, minerals, history, and mathematics than he does about warfare. In the British Army (and Navy) officers were gentleman. Their class mattered. So, they might care a lot more about math or cricket than actual warfare.

@@daviddestefanis2989 Though this was less of an issue in the Navy. There is only so much ignorance you can have of naval warfare if you are actually sailing on a warship.
