From what I've read, the VA did not accept John Eng's quest for a patent, not because the gila monster was poisonous, but because the VA only supports research that focuses on veteran problems. Eng eventually had to hawk his medication at medical shows and that's how his research began to get support. I hoped he had a gila monster display, too, but that's wishful thinking on my part.
