The story of Gorenje Superavtomat PS 653

My latest project while on vacation in Croatia.
The amount of sweat during the renovations was just unbelievable 🤣
This PS 653 from 1968 belongs to one of the first washers made in Gorenje Velenje factory under the licence of Rex-Zanussi along with the very first one PS 275 and PS 603. Compared to later models like 663 is also better made.
PS 653 uses PG 0111 that has a thermoblock relay which always provides required temperatures depending on the program choice. There is the spin on/off button and the heater ignition light.
Those machines are well known as a splendid boil washers. The wash rythm is intensive, so for my opinion it’s not suitable for very delicate fabrics. Rinses are efficient and the spin speed is only 370 rpm, which was normal for that era. 1 water level and 10 programs.
Im very happy with the result. Except the rubber parts machine is 100% original in parts. In the future it will get also enamel repairs but for know lets just enjoy this fabulous piece of history. It was my dream machine since i was a kid and i’m very proud to have it in my collection.

Wow. We had exactly this type of Gorenje washer when I was a kid, this washer was made I think 1967-1969 and I loved it. PS 653 from Gorenje a great long living simple washer. Very nice to see how you made this vintage washer work again :)

It was like watching myself over 30 years ago. I was a hotpoint enginer in the uk. You said the door leaked as the door rubber is not at its best. I used to use a strategically placed packing noodle. ( this was done for customers who were short of funds ) And also I see you used what looked like WD40. We were told not to use it as it would damage some parts perticulaly nylon parts. we used silicon as a lubricant. Fantastic video, thank you.

Great video and what a fabulous washer the Gorenje Superavtomat is, similar to our Hoover Keymatic 3203 with the hinged lid, a great idea for servicing !!

Fantastic restoration. Hoping you may be able to tell me if its easy to find the door seals for this machine? As far as I can see it attaches internally aswell as externally? We have a 1950s UK English Electric that we are trialing different seals on and would love to see if one of these fits. Very similar attachment as the original for the EE

12:00 - here in PS machines we stick wire under lip in these black door gasket. It have to be quite thick. After closing the seal lip is a bit closer to greay seal and doesn't leak ;) Great vid and very nice machine.

Hi. From the U.S. and was wondering if any of your washing machines had porcelain coated metal ? Im from the U.S and we are/were a nation of almost exclusively top load agitator washers. Many of our machines had the porcelain coatings for the wash tubs and the tops of the machines and their lids. Some washing machines here had the entire cabinet porcelain coated. Have a nice day !

beautiful machine! this was the equivalent of the rex superautomatic built in italy in the 60s.. my great-grandmother owned the rex G554 with 570 rpm.. it was the top! I hope to see a wash cycle of this beautiful machine soon :)

I said that during the premiere but I'll say it again. Fantastic video! couldn't have asked for a better presentation. The machine was in surprisingly good condition for its age. There is little to no rust, very clean inside, and minimal wear on the front panel and program wheel/drum and the place that it was used must have had very good water cuz there was not too much limescale on the drum. Even the Little Gorenje price sticker is still on it 😁 It's so nice that you can still get some rubber parts new for PS series washers 😄 Do you think it is still possible to find 275 and 603 these days maybe hidden away in someone's basement?

Thank you man! I really appreciate those words! Indeed there needs to be a good results when there is passion. And yes i was really lucky because these machine have so little working hours that all parts are in immaculate condition. The enameled outercasing is ofc rusty a little bit because of the age…but other things are just great. For now you can still get some of the parts…but the happiness is soon ending cuz the parts are going to an end. 😬 For ps 603 im positive to get it…for Ps 275 it’s a lottery. 🍀

Are there more differences between the older 663 and the newer one other than the panel and having 1 or 2 lights? What's with PS 663 R Bio? Hehehe i know the pulley does look the same but it’s not. To be honest there is no production card on the motor so im not sure if its still imported from Italy because of such an early moded…but im 99% that is already from Sever Subotica.

Thank you! I would never put a classic wd40…it’s a dry ptf (grease) but from wd40 brand. They didn’t have anything else on the island. 🫣

@@sinisamartin Ah ok, it's not that bad but I don't know what that'll do in the futur. The real one should be avoided, it's not a cleaner, not a lubricant, just a not so efficient water repellent usually used for what it's not intended.
