What a great history of this truly odd sequel! One thing not mentioned here: Resurrection was clearly inspired by a show on MTV called 'Fear', that ran for two seasons from 2000-2002. Contestants would be blindfolded and dropped into supposedly haunted places for two days, wearing a shoulder strap cam to film their own reactions as they are given instructions via walkie talkie and computer. By night, they would be challenged to dares of a paranormal origin, with each task getting more difficult. The locations would be outfitted with weird piped in sound effects and strange objects to be found. It was a big hit for the network, but they felt like the production cost (budget plus the $5000 prize money for those that successfully completed the stay) wasn't worth the hit ratings, I guess. So it was canceled after two seasons.

The problem i have is, Michael has never been some monolithic killer. People seem to forget its established in the original, he doesnt kill everybody he crosss paths with. Always been situational and random. We know he didnt kill a single person while in the sanitarium, even when escaping. He had opportunities to kill all throughout the film and didnt. I think the filmmakers get a bad rap for viewer inconsistency

Layton! Great to see another "Story of" video from you. I've always had a soft spot for Resurrection, it was the first movie I was old enough to see on my own in the theater, and I was already a big fan of the series at the time. While it's not a very good movie, the experience of seeing the newest film in a franchise I loved was enough to endear it to me.

It's got an awesome OST, awesome mask, genuinely awesome cinematography, a good Michael Myers..... Jamie Lee Curtis, whether she realizes it or not, has always looked down on the horror genre. Even her press tours throughout the new trilogy features her (at times) apologizing to people for them needing to sit through a slasher movie to get the “message” those three movies were trying to communicate. Curtis is all about Laurie and Laurie alone - not Horror, not Michael Myers, not Halloween. (And the new trilogy never once held Loomis up as a legendary figure. This is a man who saved Laurie’s life and all she does is tell Sartain that he’s the new Loomis is a smug way. And the Halloween Kills flashback seemingly exists to make Loomis’ last act in the story as lame as possible. His hand gets smacked away by a young Hawkins before he can shoot Michael in the head and that’s his final act in this timeline.) Anyway - fantastic video as always!

I can see why it wouldn't fit with the overall story of this movie though. Now if they changed the story to be more that Michael is trying to recreate his family murders, after he's either killed Laurie or she's taken the opportunity to kill her away from him and killed herself, and the home movie footage could play into that, I think could be kinda neat, story wise.

The only thing I'd add is that when Michael hands the knife to that patient in the clown mask, I assumed he was setting him up to take the blame for all the murders that night. He was the only surviving "witness." When the cops show up & find him with the murder weapon, of course they'll think he did it, and ignore his rambling about Michael Myers. This allows Michael to get away and remain in hiding.

Very interesting video. I'd like to add to the discussion of Michael being out of character in two instances: giving the knife to that clown guy and leaving Busta alone. Giving the knife back has been viewed by fans as a) Michael framing the clown guy (which I don't think would be the case, since Mike never seemed to care about whether people knew he was the killer or not) and b) him coming full circle because he finally killed Laurie Strode, which is a situation we never have seen Michael be in, therefore we wouldn't know how he would behave. So he sort of hung up the knife, so to speak. The other situation is the funny scene in which Busta chews him out. Many, including me, think that he left Busta alone for now, because he realized that there is someone in the garage. Busta told him that. So he decided to handle that first.

This was the first and last light-hearted Halloween movie. Although it's frowned upon, it did go end up doing its own thing (killing off Laurie, having goofier characters, broadcast live horror, Busta saving the day, etc). I surprisingly didn't mind its wackiness as it was fresh in comparison to the ongoing same old thing. These types of series often start and continue without every changing and the product always gets worn (just my opinion, considering most others don't mind). I interpreted it as a lone-reality "one off" and a bit of a self-parody.

I'm going through a rough time right now, and fell down the rabbit hole of your retrospectives. It's providing a great distraction, and I can't imagine the amount of hours put into them. They're very well made. Fantastic work. As far as Resurrection goes, I actually saw it twice in theaters, once alone and again with a date. I remember the gritty mall theater I frequented during the screening being completely drenched with the smell of weed. I'm no prude, but don't partake. So yeah, this movie reminds me of the smell of reefer and popcorn. I wish I picked a better flick to say I've seen twice on the big screen, but enjoyed it at the time. I appreciate Rick's initiative in trying to get different endings on different reels. Very ambitious. Definitely towards the bottom of my personal ranking, but a ridiculous, kinda guilty pleasure watch if the mood strikes me.

Rick's different ending thing wouldn't have made sense because there needs to be an official ending that could be on the DVD, be aired on television, later streaming, etc. like what about all that?

As a younger fan of the series, I find Resurrection charming. I am a fan of how H20 presented a satisfying end, and if I were old enough to be following the story in theaters as it was released, I could see myself being very disappointed and feeling betrayed. However, watching Halloween 8 for the first time 15 years after release, it's one that I love to revisit (though I wish the first 15 minutes could be erased). I find the concept refreshing to the series. It's the perfect amount of goofy for me, and I find it the perfect companion film to Jason X.
