I have an issue with 11:07. The CCP was not 'more effective' at fighting the Japanese. It was the Nationalists who bore the brunt of the fighting while the Communists simply built up strength for the Civil War. Also your video makes it seem as if Xi who has only been around for a few years singlehandedly modernized China. You know there is this guy called Deng Xiaopeng not to mention a string of successors before Xi right?

The Chinese people deserve to be saved from their evil government. Modern Chinese supremacy is idiotic, and considering the thoughtlessly oppressive practices of the Chinese government.. I believe that if the Chinese or Russian governments took global power? Humanity is doomed. We will never leave this planet, because the SAVAGES in control would use up every bit of steel for weapons, and every bit of fuel to burn dissenters. Then what happens? How exactly do we leave the planet with sticks, stones & steam power? Exactly. These wretched fascist governments are a worse existential threat than the nazis. Atleast THEY were aiming for ethnic cleansing, and not our total extinction.

My grandpa told me, before CCP arrived, there was forest growing from the edge of the field right towards doorstep, after the great leap of steel making, the whole hill was as bare as a bald head, even the remaining stumps were dig out for fuel to make steel. As the video said, the CCP ask everyone to donate their pot to make steel, and promise them they can eat at the public canteen. In the end the steel they made were so poor qualities that were of NO Fucking use. The canteen runs well for about one year, however, as everyone works in the people's commune, no one works hard in the field. Soon the grain stock run out. One day in 1959, the people's commune simply stopped serving any food. Since many family has made their pots into 'steel', they have nothing to cook, and no private food ownership was allowed before, many died soon after this. During the great famine, All the remaining trees in the village lost their bark. A neighbor ate his own dead father's body, the meat on the legs was totally cut off when they finally buried him. Another neighbor died in 1962 when the famine was nearly over, he was too weak to get off bed when his family finally had the new season's radish harvest, his family boiled the radish with the green top and made a soup, but he died just minutes before the soup was ready😰 even for years, I still remember the tear in their eyes when talking about this period of history when I was young. My grandparents and their children didn't starve to death because they have some secret rice storage at home when people were having meals in the public canteen, they also carefully planned the amount of rice they eat to a minimum as soon as the canteen stop serving, which borrows them more time in the famine. During the famine, my grandma gathered locust leaves for the family to eat, (actually it was a luxury at that time as locust is a tree of pea's family, it's leaves is high in protein and tastes better. So she had to hurry before others come). There are wooded spikes on the steams of locust, and one spike stuck into her right thumb's nail bed, causing her nail to separate from the nail bed. There was no medical care at that time, the wound never properly healed but malformed over time, and it still looked terrible even now. We Chinese never forget the crime committed by CCP, hope I can see the day they pay off for all the life they killed.

I'm half-Chinese living abroad after my family fled during World War 2. I wonder what would change if the KMT were in power. They were known to be extremely corrupt, hence, the people sided with the CCP. Historians argue that if the CCP would lose, not much would change because Chiang Kai Shek himself was a dictator.

Actually. Even if it's a joke, the Japanese invasions on Asia was only destroying local human resources with terrible inhumane slavery. Props to British and European countries who invaded countries but still educate and build infrastructure. Just compare Singapore to Indonesia. Singapore was invaded by british before they got their independence, while sadly Indonesia was invaded by Japanese before they have to work on their own independence.

However, the west just started imposing forced trade deals and even threatened to sell opium or war to them.Make sense china resorting to communism was the result of the west powers abusing them at the same time they were implementing a new government from the former dynasty.

Love your humorous way of presenting the long history of China... and your contemporary comments. Basically correct with some key omissions (maybe necessary to keep your flow). It is good and fair summary of this complicated subject. Serious students should dig into other history books in the library for more comprehensive information. It is enjoyable. Thank you for such a great job.

Chinese translators using Latin in the 19th Century makes sense, in this time pretty much any European diplomat would have known at least basic conversational Latin from their schooling. Using Latin would save them having to learn multiple European languages to communicate to the multitude of different European nations showing up between the 16th and 19th centuries. I imagine the Jesuit/other catholic missionaries played a large part in the adoption of Latin as the diplomatic Lingua Franca in China.

The lingua franca for diplomacy in Europe then was French. The Chinese picking latin just showed how out of touch they were regarding foreign affairs. Besides, I doubt that foreign European diplomats would be able to conduct trade and foreign matters with just the basics from a language that was already out of use. What's more, the official translator for the emperor was a french jesuit who died on the same year as the Maccartney envoy, why would he or other European translators for the emperor, choose to talk in latin to europeans? The decision to talk in latin was taken by people that had no idea what they are dealing with. Read the decree of Kangxi regarding the ban on missionaries (18th century) "Rites controversy" for a deeper look into the psyche of the chinese then.

@@MadNero78 I doubt the Chinese knew French, my point was that I find there is an implication that is often made when KZbinrs cover this subject being that the Chinese were using Classical Latin, as if they hadn't communicated with the West since antiquity rather than it being the immediate easiest tool of translation due to the presence of Jesuits in the Emperors court.

11:05 The Communist were not "the clearly more effective" at deterring the Japanese. The Nationalist at the time had by far the larger army compared to the Communists and were doing most of the fighting. It was just that the Nationalists were seen as not doing enough in the beginning since they were more interested in purging the Communists, which they almost did at the time, instead of fighting the invading Japanese forces. The Nationalists had exhausted much of their resources fighting, first the Communists, and then the Japanese. While the Communist gained the upper hand through propaganda, unconventional guerilla tactics, and their vast spy network.
@albertdem1352

The Communists mostly cowered away from the front lines, with the occasional cowardly guerrilla attack that would lead to Japanese reprisals against civilians. They Nationalists did almost all the work of fighting the Japanese. Moreover, the Nationalists formed the official government at the time of the Japanese invasion. The Communists were operating an insurgency against that recognized government. I think I read that one of the reasons Japanese military planners decided to invade in 1937 was that defending against the Communist insurgency had depleted the Nationalist government's resources to such extent that they (the Japanese) believed it would almost immediately collapse. Most other governments expected the same thing, and were surprised that the Nationalists were able to hold out long enough to allow the Americans and British Empire to defeat Japan. The Communists won the civil war primarily because they offered to expropriate land and give it to peasants who fought for the CCP. That's generally a successful tactic. During the American Revolution, the newly formed American government also offered land to people who fought against the British (and some of it, I think, was expropriated from loyalists).

@@albertdem1352 I agree for the most part but I don't think the communists won primarily due to the land redistribution rather than ROC's internal corruption and Japan's invasion? Considering the fact that the communists were forced by the ROC to carry out the Long March aka their "Long Retreat" at the early state and ROC also has its own land reform policies like「耕者有其田」.
