The Story of Indians Forced to Fight in the Russia-Ukraine War

Over two years have passed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leading to countless deaths in this ongoing conflict. Among those trapped in this cycle violence are poor Indians who had no connection to either Russia or Ukraine.
More than 20 Indians were coerced into fighting as soldiers for the Russian army. Their families claim that their sons and brothers were deceived by KZbin job scammers, with many pointing fingers at Faisal Khan, a Dubai-based KZbinr who runs the Baba Vlogs channel. They paid hefty money to get work as non-combant workers and helpers in the Russian army.
At least four Indians have lost their lives, while many others have been injured and traumatized. Life on the frontline is risky and grueling. Families of the victims told The Wire that the war has severely affected their sons' lives. Two families reported that their sons were injured, with one being paralyzed and currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Moscow.
The Ministry of External Affairs describes the situation as a matter of utmost concern, stating that they expect action. Thus far, 10 Indian nationals have been released.
Despite advisories against traveling to Russia or Ukraine for work, questions remain. Families ask why India cannot provide decent jobs for its youth to prevent them from risking their lives in war zones. Earlier this year, India planned to send 6,000 workers to Israel to replace those in the West Bank, but the plan was shelved due to security concerns and public outcry. However, little progress has been made in helping Indians trapped in Russia, according to the victims' families.
Propaganda ads like “Modi ji ne War Rukwa di papa” may give a sense of false pride, suggesting that our Prime Minister paused the war in Ukraine. The bitter reality, however, is that our own people are being forced to risk and lose their lives in the same war.
