When the band was introduced as Jim Morrison and The Doors, Jim stopped it and insisted that they were The Doors. He wanted the four to be equal.

Be sure to see the actual Doors performance on Ed Sullivan as opposed to the embellished Val Kilmer/Oliver Stone performance in the movie. Not quite as dramatic. Joe Barr, there's no emphasis on HIGHER. That was artistic license taken by the film's producers.

Remember though.. as much as I love Ray, he DID have his canned phrases that he used over and over again. You can watch 7 different interviews and you’ll hear the same turn of words repeatedly. Yes, he was a smart dude, but his descriptive toolbox was limited and repetitive.

Connecticut, summer of '67 I was 11, at my best friends' house, we're standing in the driveway. Which is why he stayed blasted out of his mind for much of his adult life - because it takes away (at least some of) that pain. But death was his "only friend" because he believed it was the only thing that could take away his pain permanently. And so he achieved his goal of death - pain relief - at a very young age.

The Doors were really the West Coast Beatles to me. They were so unique and when I saw them play live they were even better. Jim was hypnotizing and you couldn't take your eyes off him. Ray Manzarek played that organ with a kind of drone to it which really resonated with those of us who were on LSD. Just with the words and music to their songs you could go on a beautiful trip. They were also mysterious on some of their songs. It was a joy to see their creativity coming to the forefront.

If jim would have lived no doubt they would have given Zep a run for there money and even maybe take their rock crown away? In my opinion there only 4 truly above great almost god like bands. Which is difficult too say since the 60s and 70s were such great periods in music with alot of great bands and great music. I think in my opinion I narrowed down too 4 . Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Beatles. The Doors was so amazingly good there sound powerful haunting and melodic too the extreme. Real inovaters in sound and in music. Even in the later part in their career in the early 1970 s The doors were still so far ahead and on top of there game despite Jim's crazyness or gensius because nobody real new if sometimes he was sober or not???? Other maybe the other members of doors knew? I also think that there were times he fooled them also!!!! Hell there were times he fooled everybody!!!! Jim was gensius in creating not just in music alone but with his whole life especially with the audience!!!! He was an expert of taping on a nerve whether positively or negatively too get a powerful reaction from the crowd!!! Then ultimately create a breeding ground were caous could form at any time!!! The true puppet master!!! Jim Morrison was such a gensius it was just sick how super smart he was even drunk or not or just pretending too be!!!!! (: the doors no doubt if jim didn't die they would be #1 undisputedly!!!!! (:

Hi Terry. It is wonderful that you have a lot of money in this realm, but it will mean absolutely nothing in the next realm. I have spent the last five years researching the meaning of our existence. My personal truth changes as I continue to experience life and come across new research. its so sad you can tell when any of the members start talking about jim you can see the sudden sadness in them especially robbie...they all miss him dearly and of cource we all miss him..but jim will never truley be dead because he is still here with us through his music and in our hearts... For the later baby boomers that period was a curious, wonderful childhood memory. We remember what it was like as a kid, but just coming into adulthood shortly thereafter. Then the 1970’s exploded and we were never the same. 😍 And loved every minute of it! 😍 👍👍👍🤘✌️ Light my fire and it will burn HOT ✌️🤘👍👍👍

My Friend and neighbor, 8 years my senior in 1970 (I was 12) and who I'd heard through his blocked basement window playing top 40 Rolling Stones a few years earlier, introduced me to 3 bands: Chicago Transit Authority, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Doors. Those were the first 3 albums I'd ever bought and until then I was buying only 45s. He was a Drummer, me an aspiring one. We smoked a joint, turned on black lights to illuminate the posters covering the walls, a 1'x4' color organ synched to the music and sunk into the shag carpet. It was the greatest experience of my life. The CRACK of that single snare drum beat on Light my Fire gave me chills! The lengthy song sent me into seeing psychedelia. I hated when Radio Stations cut the song short, dropping out the entire Lead solo and my heart cheered when they played it full length. I come from New Haven and a FB Friend was one of the arresting Officers of Jim Morrison. Blown out of proportion when retold, it was more about Jim's defiance of the request for decorum as he was in the company of an under aged young Woman. They took Jim into custody after the show. Thank you for these stories; it sheds light on what was heretofore an enigma.

I was obsessed with The Doors when I was 16-18 then I fell out of obsession before I started to appreciate good musicians. Then I realised that they were a band full of them.

I was 20 by Feb. '67. I was living in Bakersfield CA at that time. I haven't had a haircut since the summer of '65, huge thick pointy sideburns too so imagine...We were literally melting of acid at the back of a Chevy '65 pick up truck listening to this song on the radio, 4 months later we went to Monterey Pop hitchhiking up the West Coast & after having a blast in the Pacific Grove watching the Third Bardo, the place was literally FULL of hippies, I can keep writing & writing reminiscing the old days and feeling kinda weird/sad that younger generations won't get the chance to live the freedom and the blast of the 60s...

I was 18 in June 1967 - I can only view Monterey Pop, but I saw Hendrix and Joplin live - in Detroit and Ann Arbor. It was nothing like the Monterey Pop Festival but Janis and Jimi always played their hearts out. Man. Those are times you cannot describe, in any easy way or manner. You had to be living through it. "Down in Monterey " (Eric said it).

Thanks for the memories. That summer of '67, this song was a huge topic of conversation for us kids for weeks. I know the summers of '65 through '70 were times of large societal and political upheaval but for a kid, you're only dimly aware of it all. Just out delivering papers, working, and enjoying the sunshine.

Here in Portland KISN had been the number one top 40 radio station for eight years and there was a little upstart, 1000 watt tea kettle called KGAR. KISN refused to play the long version of "Light My Fire" and only played the 2 1/2 minute AM radio edit. KGAR played the full seven minute version and that summer all of the kids listened to KGAR, at least they listened until 9 p.m. when its daytime license forced it to sign-off.

I remember when "Light My Fire" broke in the summer of '67. I lived in the NYC area and they would only play the short version on the radio but WKBW in Buffalo would play the long version at nighttime. Absolutely, the long version was the best. KB was a great station.

I like the long "album" version of *Light My Fire.* I'm glad they didn't reduce it in playing length. Why the hell weren't radio stations willing to play the song *as it was?* And I'm glad that they didn't change the lyrics to *Light My Fire,* even though Ed Sullivan's men didn't like "Girl we couldn't get much higher."

+Jason Carpp I agree with you. This song was what drew me to their first Album, when I heard it at a party. Still believe this is an incredible song, even today. AM Stations basically only played 3 Minute songs (and less). This was so they could get more songs (and commercials) in, during an hour. FM was just beginning, so you rarely heard the "long" version, on radio, back then. This was why they were greatly encouraged to produce a roughly 3 Minute version of the song. Once on AM, it became an immediate hit, across the country in July 1967.There was no way that I could imagine that Morrison was going to placate the Sullivan guys. The song was already out. Every baby-boomer knew the words to the song. I still like Ray's story about that situation, and how the group decided what to do, and the results. It is hilarious!
@jasoncarpp77428 жыл бұрын
+OldSchoolR&R I agree. Three minute music is fun, but I prefer *five* minutes or more. I like the Doors' attitude: Ed Sullivan: *"You'll never do Ed Sullivan again!"* The Doors: *"We just did Ed Sullivan."* I like that. :)

Actually Jim wrote most of the songs and credited the whole band. Being the main song writer he was entitled to be paid the most money but he insisted all band members were paid equally.
@3fingersalute10 жыл бұрын
Actually, Jim wrote most of the lyrics and Robbie wrote most of the music and they all worked together. Robbie also wrote lyrics to about 4 or 5 of the bigger Doors hits.
@JohnSmith-cy8hq10 жыл бұрын
Morrison's writing is just superior. Krieger wrote Tell all the people which is maybe the shittiest Doors song.
@aenoy7310 жыл бұрын
John Smith Jim started off writing all their songs but credited the whole band. He later encouraged band members to put their own names if they wrote the song. He was actually a very good person unlike the stupid "The Doors" movie which made him out to be a drunk 95% of the time.
