Yeah Euros 1988 were also in Germany. Final was in Munich Olympic Stadium. But it was the Soviet union not Russia. The Soviets were a powerhouse at football won one Euro and reached four times the finals at the Euros and got once 4th, because they had a much greater pool of players. Russia and the other teams after the soviet era are not good. Same with Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia reached two times the Euros final, and two times semis at the WC. Same with Czechoslovakia. 2 times World Cup runner up. 1x Euros winner, 2x third place at the euros. At the first Euros these three teams won Gold, silver and bronze (there was a bronze medal game at the euros before the 90s) At the 7 from the first 8 Euros one of Soviet Union, Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia was under the best three. At everyone of the first 6 six Euros won one of these not anymore existent nations a medal. In total these three team which not play anymore were 10x in the first 6 Euros in the top 4. Van Basten suffered an ankle injury already in his time at Ajax. He and the doctors and staff of both Ajax and AC Milan neglected to properly treat that. One Italian 'wonder doctor' even made it worse. He played many games with painkilling injections. He retired because by that time, he was told he risked being unable to walk normally if he continued. Sad story.

VB and R9 showed us incredible wonders, and God knows what else they deprived us of seeing due to their injuries. With the amazing things they accomplished despite their injuries, I think we can't even begin to imagine what they would have been without them

Van Basten is the greatest striker of all time and nobody will ever be able to change my mind about that. Van Basten`s team mates of Gullit and Rijkaard are also legends in their own right. I also think Frank Rijkaard is the greatest DM of all time, and Gullit is definetly one of the greatest CM`s of all time, and he is the most complate player of all time, Gullit could play CB, CM, AM, LM, RM and as a Striker.
