The Story of Max Payne

Hello everyone, and welcome back to The Retro Vault! A journey back through time, looking at classics from the PS1, XBOX/PS2, XBOX 360 and PS3 area, maybe even further back too!
In episode two, we will be looking at the story from Remedy's Classic 2001 Film Noir Action Shooter, Max Payne. Originally released for PC, and later ported to PS2 and XBOX, this game, even today, stands the test of time! I had a blast playing through it again!

I grew up as a wide-eyed little girl watching my father play through this series of games on his PS2. He's a big part of the reason I'm a gamer now. Thanks Mike; this video brought back that family nostalgia hard-core. 😊❤

same here! though for me, it was the sequel more than anything. i even have memories of playing the game myself on pc alot. my dad happily letting me do so lol. a bittersweet feeling of watching the video as it will be a year almost without him but great memories nontheless

Hi, I'm a mo cap performer and I gotta say I spend hours doing vocal exercises to Max's monologues. Great video! I also wanted to share a painful story of mine about the new Resident Evil Remakes. In late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the motion capture role of Leon for the RE 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part...☹ Now many years later, when I see how successful those remakes are I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity. In this business one audition can change your entire life.

There is always something special to firing a gun in a Remedy game. I don't know why, but there is always something there that games from other devs don't have. And it's there from the OG Max Payne all the way to Control. Always good to revisit these.

I think The Longest Journey/Dreamfall games would be a neat addition to this series at some point down the line. I remember loving it as a kid, but it also creeping me out at times.

Max Payne is STILL one of my favorite shooter series of all time! I own all 3 games... Played 1 and 2 multiple times over. Hard to believe its been 22 years...CRAZY. Thank you for covering the game. Severely under appreciated in my humble opinion.

all i could remember from this game was trying to walk on a thin red line and a baby crying in the background, surrounded by darkness. OH since your doing ps1 and ps2 games i really hope you do Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, its a game thats really close to my heart and has in my opinion one the greatest stories and voice acting in any game.

My knee is hurting just to read that many here used to watch their dad play this game 🥲 This video really hit me with nostalgia. I just bought the remastered version from Steam. I know what I will be playing next. I wonder if the god mode still works in this version.

Absolutely loving this series so far! Im not sure if this would fall into the scope you're looking for, and it was on Gamecube, but Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a game I would LOVE to see you do! All these years later I still consider it one of the best.

Really into Norse mythology, it's funny how Woden is portrayed as this mystical all-knowing person in the background cause it is just another name for Odin plus he has one eye. Bit on the nose but I love it.

I never played this game, but I’ve heard of it during a WatchMojo game controversy video. Apparently, this game was release a few months prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and it had to be recalled for a while because the Twin Towers appear in that game.

Played Max Payne for the first time last year and I must say it was incredible for a game older than me it aged very well. Loved the dialog and the brooding character of Max Payne very reminiscent of John Wick and the Matrix.

Oh god, how I remember finding a copy of this at Blockbusters. I didn't think much of it at the time, but an employee told me that I should really play it. After playing it, I begged and begged my folks to buy me an actual copy for my PS2. They never did get it for me. But one of my cousins got to borrow his friend's copy, and we played it together. Money was tight for us back then. Actually getting a game console was a big deal for us. So, renting games, and borrowing from family and friends was how we did it. But I remember that game being such a trip.

Unimportant detail but I find it funny when at 15:57 they shot him multiple times in the head (eyes) but I keep thinking that he was already fall to the ground after the first/second shot so basically they shot nothing 😂

Lifeline was a super frustrating but interesting game, just cause the voice recognition hated my partner at the time. But after struggling to identify an item for 20 minutes, naming anything it looks like, finally we tell the character to kill themselves. We get a I don't understand message and start laughing, telling them "bang bang". FINALLY they react, "Oh, the oxygen mask?" And we almost died laughing. The object on the wall looked nothing like a mask, plus what kind of accent must someone have for 'oxygen mask' to be pronounced like 'bang bang'? Just an idea for the retro vault. Lol

Dude.. hearing PS3 referred to as old really makes me feel old as fuck..... I still remember the time when the ps2 came out, my brother had just come back from college for break and with him, a new ps2 and gta3... the little 9 year old in me blown away... Also, "...development heavily inspired by the hong kong action genre, in particular legendary director john wu...i guess you could also say it was also heavily inspired by the 1999 action movie the matrix" .... also heavily inspired by john wu....XD

Man, I gotta go back and play through this as an adult. I was 5 when it released and 8 when I played it for the first time, enjoying the cool bullet time effect and fun gunplay, but I definitely wasn't interested in following the story. Seems like one I would genuinely enjoy nowadays!
