Why do you people think they are fake ? , This isn't intelligent thinking closing your minds off like that , irrational thinking is best , it's to understand the impossible and all things are possible like this universe is the irrational thinking of God , that seems impossible , you can't think rational and cut out the impossible , but keep possible , I hope you're getting why I say , mythology isn't fake , everything has been set this way from when they all walked the earth , otherwise man wouldn't have anything to go off of , to start creating lie like this one , so to narrow it down , they aren't a myth , that's being narrow minded and to rational , anything is possible , of the impossible 🧐🧐🧐 that's what learning is about the impossible , I see why people who see UFOs others want to debunk , knowing you see the shit lol 😂😂 that's not intelligent , so when people claim gods and goddesses are a myth , please define myth and why ? People never sneak that question WHY you say they are a myth ?

That was brilliant, Lance. I've had a difficult end to the day with people behaving impulsively, and we're dealing with a Federal government in Australia which this week wants to rush through a horrible bill that grants anyone of faith to say horrible things about anyone who isn't religious or is lgbtqi+ and fire them from their workplace. Greek mythology never talks about people, firstly it talks about cosmic phenomena and secondly about psychogenic state. But the myth has many levels of understanding (see Sallustius &, Proclus). The first symbolic stage contains within it the external reflective truth of the essence - idea - symbol. Appears as eternal record of cosmological events. It is a photograph of natural phenomena and every serious cosmic event. The Myth of Medusa extends satisfactorily to the third level where it describes the vibrations of the divine order that form the necessary social coexistence, the family and hold every relationship between human beings. At the same time, the vibrations of this type, seek the psycho-spiritual development and finally take care of the evolution and redemption. Medusa (medo = I provide, I think, I invent. Medusa or providence. μέδος / μῆδος = the care. Generally, Medusa means care, provision. Medusa "is not a woman like Poseidon is not a man. Both are forces that symbolize the perceptible world. Medusa is mainly a constructive force of the visible world. On another level is mental pathology. Medusa rules the material field to the level of stones: A primary element, in which everything else can be transformed - to be petrified - and which is characterized by material omnipotence. Poseidon symbolizes in a sense the integration of the psyche in birth and the creation of material forms… The concept of Medusa rape does not have the meaning we understand today, Violence (ΒΙΑ) symbolizes the deepest energy of movement, which gives momentum to diffuse the intellect of the being. Life (BIOS) is the string of the arc ( also BIOS) that gives the energy of the arrow shot and therefore the distance it will travel. The veins of Medusa were given to Asclepius to have the command of life and death (Medusa-Medicine) Medusa = Μatter Perseus = Spirit. The name Perseus also means the essence of fire... Paul Decarme explains that Perseus' triumph against the Gorgons is nothing more than a variation of the victorious battle of the solar heroes against the demons of the storm. A simple reading of the Medusa’s parents shows exactly the first symbolic step of the external reflective truth of the idea of the symbol-archetype. Perseus is a solar deity and Gorgon=Medusa is a chthonic With the gifts of Olympians he descends to the ends of creation which is subject to the trinity (Triune of Poseidon) and imperfection (the symbolism of the Graeae The gifts of Olympians symbolize the creative forces that build and illuminate the dark chaos. Perseus as his name implies is the Essence of Fire which will illuminate the chthonic areas of amorphous creation. In a next step, The psychogenic the result of Medusa's beheading is Perseus eliminating Akrisius (The mentality without critical ability) Medusa's head was placed by Athena in the shield of psycho-intellectual superiority ... Monsters in Greek mythology are mental states and cosmic unchanging forces. Congrats for your work here....Greetings from Greece

Medusa has been coming forward to me, so thank you gor the video. I have always felt her story was mistold and your focus on his story overriding her story aligns with my understanding. A story even retold recently, modernly in a teenage book and film to keep the story's perception tainted. I find the meaning of Medusa's and Perseus' name interesting. The Gorgons are of interest. I heard recently a woman who connected with them and their protective nature.

Definitely suggest telling the original myth of Medusa when talking about her and not just Ovids. Athena gets a lot of hate for something she never actually did. I understand its the most known, but its propaganda written by someone who hated the gods nonetheless. And the story of her being blessed, although beautiful, is still based from Ovids. Athena had nothing to do with her being a gorgon in any way, she was born that way.
@TinyEpics
@TinyEpics 3 жыл бұрын
I do talk about the earlier Greek myths by way of classical and archaic Greek vase paintings as well as mentioning Hesiod (it’s literally a few lines in his “Theogony” that tells us next to nothing). I even go into etymology and talk about Medusa as having originally been an apotropaic guardian figure who adorned Greek temples. The whole point of this particular video is to show different interpretations of the myth over time. Even the Greek myths have wild variations of how she is described (“dreadful” by Homer, “fair-cheeked” by Pindar). At any rate, there will be more Medusa videos in the future. And we don’t know whether or not Ovid’s account was based on an earlier Greek story that was lost. There are wildly differing accounts of the stories just in the Greek world too. Look at how Euripides often sides with the humans in his tragedies. Not all Greek poets loved the gods. Some openly challenged them. There are many instances of the gods acting petty and cruel in Greek literature too. We’re talking about a span of thousands of years. There is no such thing as “canon” when it comes to mythology. Ovid was very ironic, and likely an atheist. He didn’t hate the gods in a personal kind of way, but rather hated that humans relied on them. Like him or not, he’s considered one of the great poets from the ancient world and I find it interesting to confront how his work has impacted our modern way of understanding the old stories.

Agreed. But the gods themselves are neutral vessels who appear differently to us depending on which poet tells the story. Ovid was very skeptical and openly critical about the idea of the gods. He wanted to show us that is wasn’t the gods who were corrupt, but rather the mortals who project them into being. For me the deeper significance of Medusa’s story is how poorly women were treated by men, historically and still today. And how women too can be complicit. Her story also seems to make reference to a real and traumatic transference of power that occurred over the centuries, from the older matrilineal societies (Earth-based) to the newer patriarchal structure (Sky-based).
@jamesbuchanan3888

I view the story of Medusa as a warning to women. ... The alpha male Poseidon uses Medusa. Medusa chooses to become a monster. ... Any man who dares to get close will be turned to stone; unable to act as they are torn between their desire to protect the beautiful Medusa and slay the monster she has become. Stone is an apt metaphor as the heart of a man must become stone in order to deal with the pain of loving a monster. The metaphor of a man that can only act when viewing her image inverted by a reflection, is appropriate. Her direct gaze being a metaphor of her feminine charms. It is a warning to women that they will turn the man in their life to stone if they become a monster. Don't be the shrew who tries to humiliate her man into action. It will only make his inaction more permanent.
@TinyEpics
@TinyEpics 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely sounds like a male’s perspective. I personally see Medusa’s story very differently, but I have to say I haven't heard it interpreted quite like that before. Makes sense for Ovid's time too, I think.

A few things always confused me about Medusa. She's one of three sisters born to the sea deities Ceto and Phorcys, but she's considered mortal? If she is a goddess, as her linage suggests, why would she also be a priestess to another god?
@TinyEpics
@TinyEpics 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question that does not have an easy answer. I wondered that too, but Hesiod just says that her “woeful fate” was to inevitably die because of her mortality. It’s what really sets her apart from her “undying” sisters. And of course more details continued to be added by poets over time. Doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense logically but creates a good setup for a dramatic plot line. The priestess imagery is a much later addition it seems. Ovid didn’t state this, but it is an often told aspect of her story, again likely added on for dramatic effect and to further humanize Medusa.

Two things that I thought were kind of funny regarding Hollywood and Sculptures i'd like to bring up, One: in Clash of the Titans, Perseus raises Medusa's head to defeat the Kraken; did Perseus not consider Andromeda and everyone else in that moment would look the same direction? The dudes gotta be careful where he waves that thing LoL. Also, along the same line, if her severed head still had the power to petrify then is that exactly what this Perseus statue (10:49) suggests happened as a sort of humor? _He is looking directly at Medusa's head_ 😳😅

He places special emphasis on this, and that she was always fated to die in a tragic way whereas her sisters were destined to live forever.

@TinyEpics

I think because Poseidon is a god equal in power to Athena, so she can’t really punish him with a curse. They are often at odds with one another though in Greek mythology, and I think this story is open to different interpretations than just “Athena punished Medusa”. I hope this video already demonstrated that to some degree 😊 But in some interpretations there was jealousy at play because Medusa was said to be stunningly beautiful and we know how well the Judgement of Paris turned out when Athena got jealous over the whole golden apple scandal… 😉

You are talking about the Roman reimagined and romanticized version of Medusa. In Greek mythology and culture Medusa is born a Gorgon she is born a monster. The Romans would reimagine romanticize and rationalize Hellenic myths to bring them closer to there perspective of the world at that point of time to create their own version of the story based on their culture. The Roman version includes Neptune Who insulted her and Minerva who transformed her. In Greek mythology in the original story Poseidon and Medusa have a relationship.

Virgin priestesses were not celibate. Virgin meant unmarried not untouched and sex for vestals was often part of sacred acts not a violation of them - don’t ascribe Christian morays a historically to the ancient Greeks.

@@danyelf Where in the video do I say all virgin priestesses are celibate? In fact in another video about Artemis I explain that virgin meant unmarried in Greek, and that it didn’t mean the goddess was necessarily celibate. I am atheist and do not ascribe Christian beliefs onto anything. Also, you are not telling me anything I don’t already know.

Thanks i enjoyed the video. Its obvious Athena was jealous of her. Personally I think Neptune seduced her at first and maybe they fell in love later, thats probably why Athena was furious. just my thoughts

Bruh calling it "GREEK STORY" but you choose the fanfiction story of a "ROMAN WRITER" (ovid was a roman). In one of the actual greek story written by homer medusa wasn't r@ped she was having an affair with Poseidon and caught by athena and in much older greek story medusa wasn't cursed she's is actually just a normal monster a gorgon who has thick eye brow, wide face, thick beard, have wings in her head, and snake hairs.

Sounds a lot like life and it's misleading history that continues like this story.

Sadly true! But there is always a way to reclaim the narrative and bring some truth back into the world.

Propaganda? Really? The only propaganda I heard was the feminist diatribe at the end. Story written by men? And the evidence for this is what, other than 1970s style discontent? Some of the most powerful people in antiquity were women (the Spartans and the Vestals being only two examples). And lets not forget that story teller was a traditional role of women. Media has always been a mixed bag. In the early days she was a protector whose face seems to have been derived from bloated corpses. She was one of the Gorgon Sisters but the only one who was mortal. The later Roman posts, I think, made her a very sympathetic character. After all, as the Christian apologists pointed out, where you have many gods they necessarily limit each other's power. Athena couldn't take revenge on Poseidon directly. The best she could do is take away his object of desire, much as Hera is known to have done with Zeus. And in some versions of the story Poseidon comes off looking pretty bad. If you are interested in an alternate reality and compelling treatment of Medusa, look at her in the Atlantis series.

The single represention of a woman I could find in this list of 85 Greek writers is Sappho. _One_ out of 85 writers. Just let that sink in for a moment… Here’s the proof you seek: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ancient_Greek_writers Sappho of Lesbos was obviously celebrated in the ancient Greek world, but she seems to have been an exceedingly rare example of a female writer although women were and are just as creative as men. So why the egregious lack of female representation in Greek literature? The answer is simple: it wasn’t acceptable for a woman to be a poet or a historian. That world belonged to men. Some have posited the idea that _The Odyssey_ was composed entirely by a young woman, though I don’t believe that will ever be confirmed and many dismiss this theory as nonsense. But… who knows… Homer is not even known to have existed as a real person. Who knows how many works were falsely attributed to men, but that is another topic. Also, I never mention anywhere that there weren’t extraordinary women in the ancient Greek world, but it’s interesting how you tried to turn that around. There have been and always will be extraordinary women throughout all the ages. I included Nikita Gill’s retelling because the other accounts of Medusa I referenced were indeed written by men and it was important to me to provide balance by including a woman’s perspective. Women are scarcely seen or heard from in ancient literature except through the prism of the male perspective. And yes, men can write wonderful stories about women, to be sure, but they are not stories written _by_ women. And that is precisely my point. As far as your use of the word diatribe, well, I was simply giving a reading of someone’s art. That is the writer’s point of view coming from a place of empathy for Medusa from a woman’s perspective. Call it whatever you like.

Same. I definitely felt a lot of empathy for her whilst making this video. There are also men who want to shift away from the old narratives and show appreciation and respect for women 😊
