Very cool story with your #1 guitar, Nik! I need to rant for a minute bout my first experience emptying my bank account on a vintage guitar.. scared the hell out of me. One year ago, I payed more than I could afford for a '57 junior. I had no experience with vintage but when I picked it up and played it for the first time I immediately loved it. The neck was the most comfortable thing ever, and tone surprised me too. Even acoustically it sang angelic... I shook his hand so fast I didn't see the spraypaint! It was covering up some wear in the black part of the old tobacco burst. I was devastated thinking the worst things,, I overpayed, I overvalued, I should have bought a custom shop, should have bought groceries, damnit! Buyers remorse is awful... Fortunately, like Nik with his Strat, I was able to remove the paint. I used this cool overspray removal mit thing with some nano-tech that was recommended to me. No chemicals, just patience. Left a little black in the pores of the mahogany where it was worn through lacquer, but cleaned up really nice and revealed original finish. I was relieved.. Now the guitar continues to inspire me and I've practiced more in the last year than the previous 5 combined probably. The guitar calls me to pick it up every day and I'm happy to own it, but life lessons learned for sure... Anyways, felt good to get that off my mind. Longest spiel I've had on KZbin for sure. Guess I'm a little bored in isolation days, haha. Take care everyone. Keep playing music and being creative.

I have an older road worn 50s with the maple neck- I know it is not the same as a true vintage strat but I know what you mean about a guitar just resonating... never felt it with my Ibanez's, Epiphones LP Standard, other Strats... this RW 50s just transfers its vibration directly into your body. Found your channel after watching Matthew Scott's videos. Thanks for the content.

I've got a 2016 60's road worn i really enjoy it. I only say the year because i had to have one with a rosewood fretboard it was must. When i bought it it was around the same time they were switching to pau ferro and that wasn't going to fly being it was suppose to be replicating a 59 early 60's vibe. One day I'll have a real one!

I enjoyed the video, and the others I’ve seen on your channel. That’s a beautiful and great sounding Strat! Congrats on finding the one that inspires you. The tone you get reminds me of mine, which is a slab-board AV ‘59 reissue. I’ve played enough vintage Strats to know they can have a magic that new ones can’t touch - but when I found mine, I knew it was MY Strat. It would freak me out to take anything over $3k out of the house, and this one really scratches my itch. Kudos for having the bawls to take a plunge on vintage and then play it like it should be played!

Those Highwood saddles are next for my Strat. From the video you did of installing them on your Strat to a few others I've seen, I'm convinced of the improvement; in fact, the videos convinced me to put the original steel saddles back on my Strat after deburring the edges. I've had import spaced String Saver saddles on it for over 18 years realizing later that brightness I was missing when I swapped out the HSS pickups for the traditional SSS. My Strat's no Fullerton axe but its features are all rooted on those attributes but w/a special vibe i put to it; it's a MIM '95 Strat Special I simply call Angel for that BMQ (bridge/middle quack) that can't be possible with a middle pickup paired with a humbucking coil that has more turns of 42-gauge wire.

I love this story ,your 59 and Matt Scott’s 59 strats are prob my favourite vintage guitars being played on KZbin . I have a 59 reissue strat which came about cos I was looking for a strat with a neck like my silver series japan squier as I had been having hand isssues and that guitar was more comfortable than a 12” radius SRV . Went through a lot of strats till I liked the reissue . And that started a whole new interest in vintage strats . Love em 👍🏻 and love your story how it was restored

Hey Nik, great vid. Nothing beat that feeling when you have a passion for something. And here your passion really shines through. Back in the 80's I picked up a Charvel M2 and turned it into a evh. Researching parts and installing them. Wow. The memories. And there was no internet back then which made it even more special. Phone call after phone call. Waiting for the mail. Priceless. Was the nose art pin up girl under the paint or did you put that on ?

SRV's #! was a 1963 (actually a '63 body and '62 neck with round-laminate board, thicker in the beginning), but it had 1959 pickups, which is why Stevie called it a '59. Beautiful guitar Nik, congratulations man (like getting married-no?). EDIT: Not to take away from the fret metal you use (I'm probably going SS or EVO for my next refret). rather I'm curious about your opinion regaurding this issue. Since slab boards make strats somewhat darker sounding, perhaps SS frets bring back some highs? The below is a comment from a forum on frets. (snip) Every once in a while I get on this page to correct misinformation. The statement has been made that there is virtually no tonal difference between nickel/silver fret wire and stainless. That statement is entirely untrue. Why? ... Well: It's because every material used in the construction of an instrument is ( and should be considered) a band-pass filter, with a corresponding influence on the tone. If you drop 2 different types of fretwire on cement or ebony or some other harder material, you will hear a tonal difference. The stainless will sound thinner, as it allows or "passes" the higher frequencies to your ear, while not allowing the lower or "mid" frequencies to "pass". Example: If you tap tone 2 Brazilian f-boards, from 2 batches you'll hear 2 different resonances. That may be because one tree grew in a lower lying area, where there is more water, and it grew faster. That tree will have lower resonance f-boards than the one that grew on a hillside. The point is that EVERYTHING has an influence on the tone, and what is perceived by some as no "notable difference" by some is to others a very obvious tonal variance. I don't think of myself as nit-picking at all when I say that stainless has a notable influence on the sound, and that the difference is that the sound is less full, leaving you with high, high-mids, and sufficiently less below, that as to be an extremely obvious tonal departure from the Nickel/ silver wire. To me; it just depends on how deep you get into perception. Ok: I work on guitars for Roscoe Beck, David Grissom, Redd volkeart, Eric Johnson, and I have been a consultant for Lakland basses, Collings Guitars, Bartolini, (etc.. blah blah) and I can assure you that every one of those players and every one of the craftsmen I have come to know in those companies would be able to tell you in a heartbeat that there's a vast tonal difference between fretwires with different metallurgical content. Now: if you have a guitar that you like the acoustic tone of; my advise is to stay with the kind ( metallurgical content) of the wire you are using. (99% of folks use nickel/ silver) If you'd like to brighten up the sound of a dull-sounding guitar; stainless wire could be a tool you could use to do that. If you allow stainless to be installed on your old D-18, or your '65 strat however; you will NOT have the same guitar when the work has been done. (end) So do you hear any difference since refretting it with stainless steel frets - slightly more highs perhaps...?

I recently moved my pickups closer to the strings on my strat. I like them low because they are staggered and rather sharp ( early version of the 57/62 by fender) I do like the sound better though. There are certain things that strats do very well and there is no guitar that is more comfortable to play in terms of body shape. I dream of a vintage esquire or tele or Gibson junior

Your so much better off learning how to do your own setups and repairs. I haven't met a legit tech or luthier that wasn't more than happy to advise you along the way. Spend 40 bucks on an old used squire to experiment and get comfortable before you start hacking away on your vintage gear and ruin the original bone nut and chip the fingerboard. And never ever ever work on anything after you come home from happy hour with coworkers. True Story btw. $5 tequila specials should be illegal!! Lmao!
