Redbone May be one of most under-appreciated gifts to music. I know that their work has not gone unnoticed but, How can such greatness be overlooked by the masses? How is it that they have not yet received the attention and respect they deserve as one of the most Purest and Greatest American Rock n’ Roll bands ever. Time to give them a tribute show and air it on live PrimeTime TV.

Hello everybody. My name is David Glasband. I'm not sure how I stumbled across this KZbin post about Redbone, Lolly, and Pat Vegas. I became close to Lolly in 1987 when I was living in the Hollywood Hills in an apartment located under Christopher Huston. The same apartment where David Clayton Thoman wrote "Spinning Wheels". I produced (financially) 4 songs with Chris Huston managed the engineering and all aspects of the studio time and interactions, which I still have on a 2" 24 track analogue master. One of the songs is entitled "Custer Had it Coming", another is "You are Somebody" along with 2 other songs which I do not recall the titles of. Laurence Juber of Wings was a regular during our sessions. Due to the amount of time the 2" analogue master has been stored I need to locate a tech who is able to perform the delicate task of transferring the 4 cuts to digital media so all 4 songs can be re-mastered digitally. I lost contact with Lolly who I became close to, but heard he passed away some years back. Lolly was a wonderful human being and a good friend for a time we worked together. Everyone's paths went their own directions during the following years. In the last few years, I heard that Pat is around. I can be reached by typing my name, David Glasband in Google.

Growing up in L.A. in the '60s these guys were EVERYWHERE. He doesn't mention all of the local programs they appeared on L.A. TV. Also the clips really don't show how really good they were musically. Extremely underrated. When they created Redbone they were absolutely Funky. Their live show imparted a image of seasoned, first rate musicians and killer performers...FABULOUS!. They were the original L.A. band. Thanks for the posting...Eddie in Long Beach CA.

I remember them first in 1963 when I was 16 in Artesia High School and Pat & Lolly Vegas were in a Surf Rock band called The Avantis. I grew up in L.A. in the 1960s and they were great musicians! They had one very groovy successful 45-rpm single on Chancellor Records, "Wax 'Em Down" / "Gypsy Surfer". Later in late 1965 I saw them at Gazzari's in Hollywood under their own name after The Avantis broke up.

I did not get into music much until I was an adult. I do remember listening to Redbone on the radio while in the car with my mother. It was the 1990s until I learned Redbone was a Native American band. It is amazing what these two dudes accomplished during the 60s and 70s. RIP Lolly Vegas.

What's great is that they persevered through the entire 1960's as a hard working musical act and session musicians - until they got their big break to fame as REDBONE. And they went through many musical phases and 'looks' until they hit the one that worked for them.

Grea to see this! I must say, their competance amazes me! Fabulous playing and singing! Just a shame that they truly didn't beak out nationally. So many great ones just never get that final nudge that bring them into the full spotlight. To be truthful, though, their 1966 songs sounded a little behind the times. They were obviously suberb musicians, well produced and well recorded, but songwriting was just surging ahead so fast at that time.

Wow! $2,500 per night was a ridiculous amount of money to split three ways in the mid-60s. We're talking about the purchasing power equivalent of about ten times that amount today. For example: In 1965, the average price of a new car was about $2,650. So, Pat, Lolly, and their drummer were basically making enough money for each band member to buy themselves two new cars (6 cars total) per week and still have enough money to rent an apartment together and pay for their food. As my younger son would say, they were ballers.
@TheArtofBlues Жыл бұрын
They were definitely not splitting it 3 ways. 2 brothers get it all and then give drummer some cash for gas and food :)

Nice documentary. I would have loved to hear about the VAST contributions that Lolly made as well as the hard working Tony Bellamy and maybe even a crumb of information about the drummer. What I liked about the Bee Gees is that Berry Gibbs made sure that all his brothers and friends got the appreciation and attention they deserved.

Loril; you are exactly so right! And it's funny but I have compared cat to Barry so many times in the fact that Pat doesn't even mention Lolly or Tony or even act like they existed for the most part he talks mainly about himself. Whereas Barry can hardly do a concert without doing a tribute to Robin and maurice! The difference here is glaring, and I don't understand why!

No one left but pat. Tony Bellamy died from liver failure in 2009. I only know of two drummers (there have been more naturally since Pat is still or was still performing a couple of years ago and he has a drummer and a piano player): Pete Depoe (later with the Beach Boys) and Pat and Lolly's cousin, whose name I can't remember, who was their drummer for a long time. He was part Filipino, and had the mustache and long dark hair. So if he's still around and playing, then he's probably with Pat; but it's just pretty much just Pat now.

Lolly had a stroke August 5th 1995, which left him partially paralyzed on the left side and his left hand curled inward. He walked with a hand crutch in his right hand and was completely unable to play the guitar. He worked valiantly with physical therapy, vowing to be back in the band again. He did an interview with Baddest Oldies, I think sometime like a year before he died; I can't quite remember the date now. But I could tell by listening to him talk that he had a COPD problem; but it turned out to be much worse than that. Lolly died of lung cancer, March 3rd, 2010 on his home in Los Angeles. The curious thing for me, though; is that I know he had a wife and that they were married for 46 years; however, he never mentioned her one time during this interview nor was she visible in the home; and she was not mentioned in his obituary. ???

Find the song Jericho. It's Lolly's biography, pretty much. It answers most of the questions you asked. They are mixed; Yaqui indian, from what I understand, and Mexican American; hence the name Redbone, which means mixed blood or half breed.

Sergio Bermúdez : Mexican means from the mexica tribe . But, in mexica territory there are dozens of tribes ; I’m one of those tribes not related to mexicas , I’m a hñahñu .and still consider myself native, because I speak my ancestral language ,And live in mexica or Mexican territory . So to your point ! Not exactly .

@@jimmysapien9961 Mexican American, Native American? A combination of both? It doesn't matter. However I believe I remember hearing one of their Female Relatives on another interview state that Pat & Lolly's Father had Native American blood.
