The best explanation I have seen is that their tiny brains can't handle trying to identify between wingie baby and hornie baby, so they short circuit. But there's no official explanation.

@@Irrixiatdowne Yes there is. Hasbio added the idea that Alicorns are monsters to add artificial scarcity to an already rare phenomenon, thereby, increasing the price of them. The high prestige ones didn't get this one, so that they wouldn't kill Alicorns before they could be sold. But after the PETA raid, and multiple generations of rapid breeding, the idea became a dominant trait, and the not-monster one became recessive. By bizarre coincidence, Alicorns still have a high artificial scarcity due to most of them being stomped to death moments after birth.
