A lot of people are calling me out for incorrectly saying that "Okami" means Dragon - but it does indeed reference a dragon in this case. I should have written the following note in the video: The character used to describe Sekiro is Okami written as 狼, which means wolf. However, in the Japanese description of Sabimaru, the word 淤加美 is used when referring to the Okami Clan. This is short for Okami no kami, or Kuraokami - a legendary Japanese dragon which is a Shinto deity of rain and snow. The English is often misleading.

@androski52475 жыл бұрын
The plot is just as straightforward as Dark Souls plots. I feel the biggest change is in the context that you have for areas and bosses. In Dark Souls, unless you dig up information, you'd have almost no idea what characters like Pontiff Sulyvahn and Knight Artorias have done to get to where they are, and what their goals are. In comparison, you know that the Great Shinobi Owl is your father and has plans to take the dragon's heritage for himself; You know that Genichiro wishes to use the dragon's heritage to save Ashina. Sure you may still have to do some digging to find deeper information, but overall you know the main goals of bosses in Sekiro, whereas in Dark Souls none of that information is given to you in a clear and concise way.
@AscendantStoic5 жыл бұрын
@@gilvanmessem9474 Well, there was actually little to no plot, most of the Souls games depended on the lore and worldbuilding, and most of that is well hidden in the item descriptions and some of it is implied with visual or obscure hints, Sekiro is pretty much thr only game in the Souls series to have a traditional story with traditional cutscenes layered on top of the usual Souls lore.
@the_furry_inside_your_walls6395 жыл бұрын
@@AscendantStoic That's been the case for all of From Soft's ARPG's. Dark Souls: You are the Chosen Undead, you must ring the bells, then rekindle the first flame or usher the Age of Humanity. Dark Souls 2: Escape the limbo state of undeath, seek the King of Dragleic in its Capital. Bloodborne: You are an outsider who has undergone the infamous Blood Transfusion tredition of Yharnam, and are now a hunter. You must go through out Yharnam and its surrounding areas to cleans the region of the beasts that plague it, but you soon end up discovering far more than what you thought you would and that you are actually trapped inside a dream, or more-so a nightmare. Either accept Gehrman's wish to off you right then and there, thus freeing you from the nightmore, refuse and take his place, or ascend to become a true Great One among the others. Dark Souls 3: You are an unkindled one. You must seek out the lords of cinder, bring their ashes back to their thrones, then either sacrifice yourself to rekindle the flame or revolt and become the lord of darkness, thus ushering the Age of Humanity and putting an end to the Age of Fire and Gods.(Kinda like Dark Souls 1, only with a different journey and more detail added to the outcomes) These games have always had fairly convoluted lore that you'd only be able to some-what understand by piecing all of the evidence together.

I think it was implied in the Sculptor's dialogue that he never suspected that his partner in training was in fact a girl. At least in the original Japanese dialogue, the Sculptor consistently referred his old partner as "he". Kingfisher was likely a woman from Sunken Valley as she was wrapped in bandages, thus the Sculptor was unable to tell her true gender. Also, the item "malcontent's ring" in it's original Japanese name actually was "nakimushi's ring". Nakimushi (泣き虫) is a Japanese insult to someone who is quick to tears. Likely a nickname given to her by the Sculptor. So Kingfisher was basically a tomboy waifu who cried to the Sculptor often during their time training together.

This show how much you can adapt yourself, this also indicate that the immunity to poison may be optained over your life and not through generations as you said (and this make much more sense, because evolution takes at least a few centuries whereas the imunity system of a human is much more reactive). Yeah but if Wolf doesn't choose to be a bad boy and become Shura himself, the hatred has to go somewhere, and it continues to go to the original vessel it has been going to all along. Nobody's there to cut off his arm this time and keep him from becoming The Demon, cus a certain old guy that that did it before has been killed. So yeah he is Shura, or rather a vessel for Shura to manifest, he was the whole time, it's just that at a certain key moment in the story, Wolf comes a single choice away from being the perfect vessel of hatred himself. Really great to see this Sekiro content coming out from Vaati, very interesting stuff discussed. I do think the relationship he describes between the sakura dragon and Buddhism in Ashina is a misinterpretation, though. Vaati talks about the desecration of Buddhist statues which he attributes to the influence of the dragon, but I think the key point he's missing is that Sekiro is set in a fictionalised version of actual historical Japan during the Sengoku period - which gives important context to what's being discussed here. First to note is that the spread of Buddhism to Japan in the first place was that it came from the west - Originating in India and spreading via the Silk Road and China. The dragon of Sekiro, notably, is frequently described as having come from the west and is, in appearance at least, very typical of Chinese dragon folklore. So it's not unreasonable to associate the two together - Quite frankly, if a bunch of monks from china show up alongside a magic, immortality-granting dragon, preaching their religion, that's a pretty solid pitch for getting people to sign up to your faith. And throughout the game Buddhism as a whole is not portrayed as opposing worship of the dragon heritage or vice-versa. Specifically at this period in Japan, it's worth noting that a big deal as Japan was being reunified by Oda Nobunaga was the destruction of Buddhist political institutions which had great power over different regions of Japan - Which seems to be exactly what's happening in Ashina, as we can glean from Isshin's Ashina Sake dialogue that the Ashina rebellion 20 years ago was motivated at least in part on religious grounds - citing that the Ashina were branded "heretics" and that the "...we couldn't even pray at the water from the springs." With this in mind, it seems to me to be more the case that Ashina effectively has it's own unique branch of Buddhism ingrained into the society, warped by the inclusion of the dragon and adapted in with pre-existing worship of the giant snakes, which is a major reason as to why the interior ministry is so adamant on reasserting control over the region - To crush down on this unusual and potentially destabilising dogma. Heck, that's probably why in the later phases of the game they bring all that fire-based weaponry - Not just to defeat the Ashina forces, but also to burn down heretical shrines/temples - And would also explain why a certain buddha-crazed man would flip off in a burning rage of his own when the ministry arrive. So yeah. Stuff to think about there.

Great video, as always! The only thing is that the ‘soccer ball’ the Okami women are playing with is actually a kemari - a type of ball game that was popular among courtiers in Heian period Japan. It perfectly fits the aesthetic of the Fountainhead Palace, given everyone there is confirming very closely to Japanese court culture of the Heian period. Even the ‘Sakura Bull’ is reminiscent of the kind that would pull a woman’s marriage carriage between noble houses. :)

@kalameet31365 жыл бұрын
@@putyograsseson I think it's combination of several things. First - sabimaru description. I says that it is effective even against Okami descendants. Then we know that Okami are warrior woman clan. Then we know that two snake eyes are both woman and all other enemies sound like men to me. One more thing is that sabimaru in game really works well against two snake eyes woman warriors. All this can be linked if desired, but at the same time I think only two snake eyes are actually very distant descendants, not all the gun fort enemies.

Strictly speaking, the word 'okami' has several meanings, depending on how you write it. The word used by several characters to address Sekiro, Ōkami (狼), means 'Wolf' -- but that same pronunciation is used for the word for 'great deity' (大神). Japanese wordplay is interesting that way.

My theory is that the Okami invaded because actually came to RETRIEVE a divine heir of the dragon’s heritage. I mean, why are the teachings of lightning reversal just in Ashina castle? I found no other place mentioning attack from Okami or threat of lightning besides Ashina Castle. The place where the Takaru, a divine heir, lived. And one of the places where I found scattered eel liver was Ashina castle and fountainhead palace. Maybe some Ashina invaded the fountainhead palace too? One last thing, Tomoe brought Genichiro the power of lightning and taught him floating passage then lost the text for it. How did the pot noble in Hirata estate get it from her?
@Carlos-ln8fd5 жыл бұрын
The Fountainhead Palace is also in Asshina so I don't think they cared about moving the dragon's heritage. Considering how everyone is corrupt in the palace, I think the invasion was more likely an attempt to dominate a larger portion of the Ashina land.
@gluebottles9255 жыл бұрын
Carlos maybe so, but wouldn’t it make sense to move the divine heir to their area of Ashina so that he is both closer to the divine dragon and directly under their protection?

As for the pot noble and the scroll, considering how the one in the hirata estate was cast out from the clan that lives in the divine realm, he could have taken a scroll and the third of the mask with him when he traveled to earth. Tomoe learned the flowing passage from the Okami clan, so the pot noble could have gotten a scroll from them in the divine realm too.

Hey Vaati I have a theory, there's a relation between the divine dragon and the serpents? I mean, the old lady on the sempo temple, I think, says that they are the children of the gods, maybe I'm wrong. And I remember the description of the rings of soul/item farm of Dark Souls 3, the description says that the serpents where before dragons, and they lost their divine identification, their wings and their legs, so I think that the serpents in Ashina could be the children or the"family" of the divine dragon, but they become more human, ambitious, and that make them want invade the mortal world. I think that's all, maybe I'm wrong but if I can give you some idea, I'm super happy. Keep working Vaati, you are amazing!

Cognate to the slugs in Mibu village and centipedes-failed dragons. That’s always been MY theory at least.

@@colemcmillan5008 yes, but I'm only speculating with an item of Dark Souls, but I thought that it would be interesting, but hey, the serpents are immortal no? You can only kill them with the mortal blade, so it's the "humanity" that make them take interest in conquer the mortal world

Doesn't Okami means Wolf? Kuro calls us Okami all the time. And it is translated as Wolf. I've read somewhere that Okami, depending on the kanji used to represent this word might be pronounced in a way that sounds like "great deity" O (great) + Kami (deity). Dragon usually is represented by the word "ryuu" or, in some cases, "tatsu".
