Speaking to Rolling Stone in early 1994, the Nirvana frontman said, "I know we're gonna put out one more record, at least, and I have a pretty good idea what it's going to sound like: pretty ethereal, acoustic, like Automatic for the People. If I could write just a couple of songs as good as what they've written... I don't know how that band does what they do. God, they're the greatest. They've dealt with their success like saints, and they keep delivering great music." David Fricke for Rolling Stone 1994

If you were a teen when this dropped, your life was altered. Music has the power to capture the zeitgeist and inspire the voice of generations. We may not have that now in the algorhythm based cultural fragmentation, but there is a silver lining. Your book will help young people understand the importance of pop music, and WHY that matters.

TEEN SPIRIT was a pretty popular Deodorant in the 80s/90s, which always made this title awesomely hilarious to me. I remember the first time I saw this on MTV in the early 90s I thought he was going to sing about the deodorant 😅💜💜💜

For anyone in high school when that song hit the airwaves, there was no mistaking that it changed everything in pop music. I was more or less a rocker and in a sea of bland hair bands, the only thing remotely different I had heard up to that point was GnR. Teen Spirit literally stopped me in my tracks while I listened to the whole thing.

I was a punk in the late 70s / early 80s and felt absolutely crushed that the rebellion against the rise of Big Rock spiraled up into hair metal and stadium anthems. When grunge came along, and finally dismantled that egotistical garbage I was grateful to those kids.

Great video, great list, don't see honorable mentions ( gotta wait for the book :) ) so the next comment is maybe out of pocket... wish it had more than just "Beatles" influence from England. Omitting sex pistols for punk, anyone from Manchester scene for post punk or Madchester for the birth of dance music and another lads from Manchester called oasis for their wonderwall rather than waterfalls.. Also, i would argue I can't get no satisfaction had bigger influence than like a rolling stone since Dylan was the one leaning to rock trends and electric guitar. Also #2, putting both pac and biggie year on year? no love for indie genre? instead of biggie there should be neutral milk hotel, in the aeroplane over the sea that had HUGE impact in the years to come. But as Kurt and you said in this video, oh well, whatever, nevermind. 😄 Anyway, creating the playlist on deezer with your list as i type this, will listen to it more later. :)
