Thus far. Considering F1 age is only getting lower and lower, it is inevitable that there will be a new generation full of young men who are far more talented than the 2012 grid were. It is just nature of sports where younger and younger people get into it and have more years to develop (and learn faster at younger ages + faster reflexes e.t.c.).
@bloodlustaxe1500
@bloodlustaxe1500 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't only the most talented grid, but also the grid where any car could be competitive depending on the track, having 4 teams with decent cars and Red Bull being only a bit ahead of other teams in performance. Basically Kimi, Lewis, Alonso, Button, Webber, Vettel all had cars that could compete at the front. Well you could argue about the Lotus being in the same level, but in my opinion it was a pretty decent car and was almost as good as the Ferrari.

You are right, I literally remember that. But to be fair, both him and McLaren did say that Singapore wasn’t the “cause” but a symptom. It had been building for a long time and Hamilton decided to go public about it after Singapore. The video did also build this weird pseudo-narrative around the Belgian GP where he kinda half-blamed Grosjean for costing Alonso the title and causing Hamilton to leave McLaren. It was a bit of a weird angle that made me think, “That is NOT how I remember that season.”

@@josedupuydelome9486 Webber was a top 5 driver those seasons lmao, surely better than Massa who even got trashed by a sophomore Bottas. Vettel had thick glass as a car in 2010, 3 DNFs from the lead and had issues with the car for a third of the season. In 2012 their car had a narrow operating window and had degradation issues which played into the advantage of Ferrari who possessed lesser degradation and a strategy team as competent as the other top teams. They did have a slower car at least over 1 lap, and were a midfield car till Bahrain, but the above mentioned factors along with Alonso in his best ever form were definitely a formidable combo, compared to Vettel who was in a similar form but had a unpredictable car at his hand. Very good summary of an epic season. It was truly a privilege to watch it live back then. A season which can be described with the quote from Vettel, "Remember these days, there's no guarantee they will last forever." And we need more videos like these. The youngsters who started to watch F1 in late 2010s, for example, have no idea why Raikkonen was in F1 in the first place. They think he was there just to be material for memes instead of the stuff he was able to pull off in the notorious McLarens and during his first Ferrari visit.

I remember being quite excited, but also really nervous, about Kimi’s comeback. He had been my favourite driver during the time when I grew up with F1. And I even supported him when he was in Ferrari, despite being more of a McLaren fan. I realised I actually just liked Kimi! 😅 But I was nervous about his comeback because Renault had been a little aimless before, and Kubica really was making the car look better than it was. But Kimi really went with it, and I remember halfway through the season that people were asking him if we could see a “winless world champion” because he was always getting podiums and not winning! 😂😂 But he got P3 in the title and REALLY deserved it.

Personally for me it's 2005 - 2012. It was ordered, cold and calculative dominance from Michael pretty much throughout his career (1994 - 2002 he was the best driver by a nautical mile) with dominant cars in his disposal 2 of those years followed by 03-04 which were decent seasons. Then hell broke lose when Renault built a competitive car with Ferrari nowhere to be seen with their Bridgestones. The young guns Kimi and Alonso fighting all the way and showing their excellence in races like Imola and Japan. Imagine Verstappen winning all the way till 2028, and in 2029 Kimi Antonelli and Hadjar suddenly benefit from far more competitive cars than Max whilst he's trudging along with Leclerc. Also each year from that season onwards had a unique storyline. 2005: Tyre War at its peak, the young guns battling throughout the year destabilising the incumbent and forever dominant Schumacher whilst he struggles with their current car. 2006: Schumacher manages to take revenge and wagers a death battle against the new king: Alonso 2007: Civil Wars and Controversy crowns an unlikely but long awaited king: Kimi Raikkonen. A new prince has awakened challenging the authority of the 2 previous princes. Lewis Hamilton. TBC as I have something urgent to settle

Add crashed out of the lead in Brazil to that too. Adding up all the points Lewis lost through no fault of his own that year you get around 150, enough to make him the champion even after you also add any points lost through bad luck to Vettel and Alonso's tally as well. People either forget or don't know how well Lewis drove that year because the points tally makes it seem as though he was never in the fight, when really it was just a calamity of awful luck and far too many mistakes from McLaren in a season in which he as a driver was sublime. I made some notes from when I watched this season some months ago! Warning: long text General notes/observations: - Every penalty is a drive-through - Gerars ratios can be modified and the 7th gear is an important factor on top speed - The Mercedes was a good car at the start of the season but it didn't keep up. - Best car until Japan i'd say it was the McLaren. - Felipe Massa's pace is EMBARASSING when compared to Fernando, especially in the first half of the season. Australia: Your average australian GP. Button wins, McLaren is on par if not ahead of red bull. Alonso takes 5th for Ferrari after a recovery drive from 12th and a Crash from Pastor Maldonado on the last lap. Too far off the pace from McLaren and red bull Malaysia: Don't ask me how did Fernando win this race because I won't be able to explain. Bad luck for Vettel and Button who had to pit for repairs and dropped out of the points. China: Surprisingly good pace from the Mercedes. Heartbreaking DNF from Michael, it could have been a Mercedes 1-2. Ferrari struggled again Bahrain: Felt so weird to watch a daytime Bahrain GP. Pretty normal race, Red Bull back at the front with McLaren. ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE TO LEAVE A SPACE!!! Spanish GP: Ferrari brought some upgrades and Alonso qualified P2. He overtook Pastor Maldonado for the lead at turn 1 but tyre deg was bad and had to settle for P2. Friendly remimder that Pastor has more wins than Lando 👍🏻😸 Monaco: I have to point out the extremely dangerous situation caused at the start because they brought out the SC too late with marshals in the middle of the track already towing Grosejan's car. Webber won form pole, pretty easy race. Exciting final because of the threat of rain. Vergne completely threw P7 because he pitted for inters and Button crashed out of desperation to overtake Kovalainen. Canada: Ferrari doing some funny strategies and throwing a podium. Hamilton's bad pitstops are now a meme among comentators. But he went on to finish the race still Europe/Valencia: What can I say Silverstone: Crashdonado has done it again. Great race from Fernando who took pole on the wet but he suffered from graining on the last stint and finished P2. Finally a good result for Massa. Bad pace from the McLarens Germany: Precious battle between Alonso, Button and Vettel. Vettel threw the podium by earning an avoidable penalty (overtaking Button off-track and not giving the place back) Hungary: Another disastrous race for Michael from the start. Great pace from the Renaults. Underwhelming pace from the Ferrari Belgium: Great battles on the midfield after the infamous turn 1 accident. THEY ACTUALLY SHOWED THE MARUSSIAS CON CAMERA LOL Italy: Amazing race!!! And I think it's actually the first time Alonso and Vettel had a direct wheel to wheel battle. It ended up with a DT for Vettel for forcing Alonso off the track, then both Red Bulls abandoned due to reliability issues. Don't ask me how did Pérez score P2. Singapore: Hamilton retires from the lead on lap 23. The GOAT Karthikeyan crashes on lap 33 and causes a SC. INCREDIBLE accident on lap 39 after the restart, between Michael and Vergne. SC again Japan: KOBAYASHI PODIUM YOOOOOOO 😸🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 Now I'm a Kobayashi fan. Also insulting pace from the red bull lol Korea: Again, the red bulls are untouchable, followed by the ferraris. Disastrous race for McLaren with Button out on lap 1 and Hamilton with problems on the car having to pit multiple times. India: More of the same except Alonso could overtake Webber this time, ending 35 SECONDS ahead of Massa. An HRT has a brake failure (again). 8th DNF for Michael :( Abu Dhabi: What the hell was this race mate. Anyway, Kimi win 😼 COTA: Bad pace from the Ferraris but Fernando still managed to score a podium. Finally Hamilton finally got a win after a lot of bad luck with reliability. Brazil: It is beyond my comprehension how Nico Hülkenberg threw a potential win in a force India. It is also beyond my comprehension how was he competing with the McLarens when Di Resta was stuck on the midfield. Anyways, Vettel won the championship

For people that say that Vettel deserved it as much as Alonso that year despite having a much better car, here is what Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton said in 2012: Michael Schumacher has named Fernando Alonso the strongest active Formula One driver. Schumacher, whose run of five consecutive titles was broken in 2005 by Spaniard Alonso's Renault breakthrough, said the 2012 championship leader is developing "even beyond himself". "There are phases like that when everything seems to work out, but he has worked for it," the great German said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Schumacher, 43, therefore admitted that Alonso is currently also better than F1's reigning back-to-back world champion, the 25-year-old German Sebastian Vettel. "Sebastian is a great guy and a great driver, but he is dealing with a different situation now in a learning process," said Schumacher. "To be a good winner, one must also be able to lose, it is a part of your development. "Only when you have learned to lose can you respect and enjoy winning even more." Hamilton:"It's inappropriate for me to say who is the more deserving," "I am a fan of Fernando's - I was a fan even before I got into Formula 1 - and I think this year he has driven so well. More so than anyone else. "Sebastian has stepped up a lot at the end of the year with the improvements on his car. But Fernando is still pushing. Today he just drove phenomenally well and he's just holding on, still.For me, in my eyes, he really is a three or four times world champion." "Seeing Sebastian dominate the last few races doesn't come as a surprise because the Red Bull has been dominant for the past few years," The Sun quoted Hamilton as saying. "They seem to have a great capacity to improve the car. Adrian is just a genius. I can't even imagine what he's doing. He is a one-off. "I've seen their speed - there was no way I could compete with that. Even if I drive at 200 per cent and crash, I can't match it."

One reason why 2012 is a good season is because it's in between two "dark ages" : from 1995 to 2010 under normal conditions it was impossible to pass other cars without an enormous grip advantage (like 2" per lap), which made races unwatchable, until this was (badly) fixed by DRS ; and the current era is another "dark age" because of the atrocious safety regime of race-destroying safety cars every other race and red flags in almost every session. The years before 1995 were good when not dominated by a single team or driver (1990 and 1991 stand out), but the races are hard to watch now because the TV directors were not well-equipped like today and were also idiots.

What's wrong with DRS?
@alesi257
@alesi257 Жыл бұрын
@@ahhmm5381 I think most people are offended by the artificial nature of it, the fact that some passes are too easy, and that occasionally a slow car can artificially latch themselves to a faster car by getting towed by the DRS (we saw this recently in Melbourne). In my view, the biggest drawback is the “DRS train” where a whole peloton is locked in place until pit stops despite huge differentials in grip and speed if the 2nd-placed car, which has DRS, cannot pass the 1st, making all the faster cars behind helpless and destroying their races. That said DRS is a huge improvement over the previous no-passing regime that lasted 15-20 years, most symbolized by the Alonso-Petrov “battle” in Abu Dhabi. But the last time we had an optimal situation in terms of passing was 1991, when passing was hard but possible “organically”, without DRS, simply based on mechanical grip and relatively low aerodynamic turbulence compared to 1995 and beyond.

There were also many little stories from that year that you didn’t touch on. Like Sergio Perez’s giant-slaying drive to P2 in Malaysia that very nearly became a win. And although you were harsh on Grosjean, he had the European Grand Prix at Valencia in hand before a reliability failure. It was easily Grosjean’s best race. We also got Kobayashi’s simply heroic podium at his home race in Japan. Just really, so many feel-good stories from that season. Plus, I think you are overdramatising the impact of Grosjean’s crash in Belgium. 24 points is a race win. That is a big, big lead. Vettel really deserved that comeback after Alonso let it slip from his hands. And I say that as an Alonso fan (also at that time!) Which is why I really do need to emphasise just how bad that Ferrari was! Alonso pulled off some miracles early that season.
