This is a very special video! So good to see Mr. Steiner again!! His zoo was amazing. Used to go their regularly to see the new additions to the zoo. We donated an orphaned juvenille mongoose to the zoo that ended up in the National Zoo in Washington DC as the result of an animal exchange (he got Canadian geese and some other minor animals in that exchange but he wasn't too bothered by it). Great memories!! Thank you Mr. Steiner. GGG - There was in fact a large national zoo in Liberia before Mr. Steiner's a short drive out of Monrovia (I forgot the name of the area it was in). It had an extensive collection of animals including elephants, giant tortoises, pygmy hippos, etc. It was sadly destroyed after the 1980 coup. So it was a joy when Mr. Steiner opened up his zoo.

My man, I know those people, oh! My poppy used to print things for them. I gave Charles my pet crocodile for his animal orphanage when I left Liberia in 1983. He used to have a Pygmy hippo named Tommy. The man can speak raw Liberian English. Thank you for sharing this. My pops can still try and be in contact with them.

I’d love to see this in a movie. Their whole story! Bless them both! I would have been devastated and forever traumatized by how the zoo was lost. Grateful they didn’t kill me but devastated for the animals.

My ELWA pekin...this is a great video only one small thing. We had the Totota zoo from Tubman time. In 1980 they killed and ate all of the animals there.
