If, from what I myself have seen, some or many have a daily culture where those who may not have a single place to reside and in my city, spend a good chunk of time hanging out with each other at the train station, asking for money, kind of minding their own business, standing in the way, not openly going and doing work (by not being there the whole day), it'd be difficult to respect that kind of lifestyle in places where self-sufficiency is respected. It's not that some don't have the means - there are some who have jobs and who do have housing. There is a family I think who lives down the street where I live in Germany. But when you go and see someone asking for money, trying to get multiple meals out of passer-bys, and then seeing said person who was asking for money or the group who lingers at the station drinking whole bottles, dropping and thereby breaking bottles after going around asking for money, walking up to people and trying to collect money while trying to put on a sad face and then looking normal again when walking away, it isn't a good look.

Dear dj. I hear what you say, but I am still angry at thr oppressive treatment of the Roma gypsies. Here in America,everybody is equal. Several of my friends are gypsies, including a friend that was my teacher in Art School. He showed me how to be a successful artist and has a business of his own. Two more of my friends are gypsies; one is a doctor and one is a dentist. They realized early on that to HELP THEIR PEOPLE, THEY HAD TO GET THE EDUCATION TO DO IT. THRY WENT TO COLLEGE AND SUCEEDED. Being assimilated, they didn't lose their identity or customs at all. My art professor still travels from state to state, tells fortunes and reads the cards. My doctor and dentist friends who are gypsies who help other gypsies, have the money and means to travel at will whenever they please. The doctor is a neurosurgeon who specializes in brain diseases and had become somewhat famous but he too likes to travel at will and stick to thr old ways

Well, part of the problem is that most of those people don't want to be integrated, they don't want their children to go to school and so on. They see this integration as a threat to their community and identity and they do have a point. If they started being integrated their communities would seize to exist in all likelihood. For many people imposing our western European values to them would be equally as bad. I am not saying I agree, I do think that true freedom is achieved through a common ground-set of rules, such as education, on which premise I do think that European values entail a certain universality. Though, no one seems to care enough to take the initiative and face the backlash, both from the Roma communities and from the so called left "liberals", so the problem just perpetuates.

I am appalled at the oppressive treatment of the gypsies in Europe, especially in Italy. I live in a southern State in America. One of my best friends is a man of gypsy descent who was also one of my Art teachers in school, with a very successful business of his own. Another gypsies is a doctor, another a dentist. My neighbors are mostly immigrants from Africa, Mexico, South America, Europe. My husband is from Sweden and my family is from different parts of Italy--Venice, Bari, Puglia and Sicily. In America, everybody has equal rights to religion, freedom to worship, housing and job opportunities. No country, including mine is perfect including mine but I am still shocked at the persecution of Roma peoples is tolerated. I also have seen other groups treated similarly in other parts of thr world I have been in. All I have to say is if thr Roma were given an opportunity for Education and jobs, thry could become a valuable asset to their countries. My Roma friend , thr doctor, specializes in treating cancer patients and working on a cure for the disease. Who knows what thr Roma might contribute if thry were given opportunities to become contributing members of society

Let me paint you a picture of what people see: Someone is walking around asking for money or trying to get multiple meals out of passer-bys by actually walking up to people standing in line to get food, putting on a sad face which disappears when the person is rejected, and then seeing said person who was asking for money or the group who lingers at the city train station drinking whole alcohol bottles, getting loud, dropping and thereby breaking bottles after going around asking for money, it isn't a good look. (A scene in Stuttgart). Some have a home, while others have a bush nearby, the youngest kids are there with the adults during the day standing around by the Welcome to Stuttgart information booth, the older kids are somewhere (not really my business to know where, I'm not their mom). Something else that someone else mentioned is that with certain attempts from states to integrate and help them become self-sufficient, people push back. They don't have to accept the help. But the whole picture is literally something that happens on a daily basis sometimes. The teenage girls will be there too during the days. It's kind of frustrating honestly to see ALL the comments shaming Europeans, when it's really kind of like "have you not seen these images?" AND to see the continuous drinking instead of just idk. Getting a job? The means are there. Sitting in the outside banks or being approached and asked for $5 which then turns to $15 which then being asked "oh no, please. Just another $20"or something like that? Being walked up to while you're in line with someone asking you for food or for money? like the individuals know they're going to shame you into it? It is not a pretty picture. Is it wrong to discriminate? Yeah? ofc? But seriously. Not everyone accepts assistance - and when someone doesn't accept assistance, there isn't much that can happen. ----- Let me say, this all feels so weird to write, but it really ought to be looked at when discussing what is happening to create such a bad image in modern terms. Some have jobs, but there are contracts in everything for the protection of the person in Germany. If someone is unable to provide an official residence or some type of "I am here at this residency ," even if they are registered at a friend's house (everyone has to register when they move somewhere) you are unable to get a legitimate contract. There's a disconnect.

Do some have places? Of course. There is a family who lives near my place in an apartment. Does it take any special training to show decent respect and dignity of the human person? Of course not - but the image doesn't help break free from stereotypes nor does what the other person who wrote, who I would describe well-aware of reality on the ground, also help where certain attempts to help become self-sufficient in a home with a steady job are rejected for the sake of personal identity (@grivza). There is also the level of what is socially appropriate. People can't be forced to accept assistance if they don't want it, but if they don't accept assistance, change is going to be extremely slow if there is any at all while the world goes on.
