Sadly you are probably right, tin worm was the curse of old British cars back then, add to that the shoddy workmanship of BL and its no wonder that the likes of the MX5 took the market by storm!

Just a minor point, from a former Spitfire and TR3A owner: had this car gone into production the name (at least in North America) would have had to change. The model name Fury was being used by Chrysler for the full-size Plymouth sedan. Like others here, I appreciate the video, I always assumed from the pictures I have seen that this car was nearly the same size as a Spitfire.

Those headlights... Their _appearance_ in the down/off position, is very good - like the entire nose area, and bodywork overall. 4:00 - On/up? A mixed bag. They don't stand up too high - which is good for aesthetics, but not so good for road illumination. That secondary action - the faux grille section tipping downward - is *bound* to have done a bunk at some point! If the lower section was bent or faulty, would the upper still function? Me thinks *not* . Over time, would the actuation of the lower section get fouled by grime, grit, etc, off the road? Love the vacuum operation? I guess being vacuum powered might've avoided, what was then, a heavy electric motor (or complicated/heavy hydraulic) powered movement. However, it comes with the limitations of needing the motor running, and presumably moving quickly at higher revs but slowly when idling. 🙄

A lovely car, and one which would have put the MGB most decisively in the shade. The steering wheel and boss look exactly similar to the Les Leston wheel fitted to the Bond Equipe 2 Litre from August 1967, rather than one of the familiar Triumph ones used in the Mk.1 GT6

This beasty looks even better on the move than it does in static pictures. With the fact that the Stag was beginning conception and development not too long after this was in prototype stage, one wonders why Triumph didn't just trot this out and make it in large numbers. When the MKII saloon came along in 1969, there was the option to drop the PI 2.5 in or (controversially) after the forming of BL in 1968, the Rover 3500 V8.....but that last wouldn't have worked for the same (many and varied) reasons it didn't when the Stag itself was on the drawing board. I could even see the Stag as a sort of Fury MkII, if the model had been developed along the lines of the MkII saloon as history records. All-in-all, the Fury should have been commissioned - it had so much going for it, with so much already tried and tested from the parts bin - or at least it is one car that someone should have turned into kitset form, either then or now. When I first read about the Fury, I was saddened to find it was a one-off and for the life of me, I cannot understand why. Thanks for this rare footage of this unique vehicle out and about - it was most appreciated.

What a great car. I'd never heard of it. I owned a 2 litre GT6 Mk 3 for a few years and always thought a convertible version would be perfect. I really don't understand why Triumph never made one as the GT6 was basically a Spitfire with a hardtop. The Fury would have been even better.
@StupStups
@StupStups 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard the reason they never did a 6-cylinder Spitfire was partly because that would have been as fast as (or faster than) the TR4, 5, 6, so they'd be competing with themselves. The Spitfire was aimed at the lower end of the market and was already quick enough compared to the Sprite / Midget etc.

I do not think it would have been an improvement on the styling of the TR6, Spitfire 1500 or Stag at the time. The side view looks good, but the rear end is not particularly stylish and the front end, don't shoot me for saying this, but it looks like the Corvette of that era. Their line up at the time, including the 2000/2500 saloons and the Dolomite, was hard to beat Shame that the "muscle" of Cowley and Longbridge finished the marque off.

Cannot say I particularly care about the pop-up lights over something a Spitfire-like fixed-light or say a Stag sportscar (rather than grand tourer) style arrangement, yet the Fury should have been built in place of the TR5/TR6. It would have certainly benefited from the Triumph 2000 GT fastback prototype's hotter 115 hp 2-litre as the entry-level engine followed by the 150 hp 2.5-litre PI, later replaced by other engine options.
