In 2006, France were inches away from being World Cup Champions again, but by 2010, they were the laughing stock of the world. How did this happen? Who were the culprits? And why is this moment in footballing history so infamous? An indecent marriage proposal, a mutiny, one of the worst acts of sporting foul play ever seen, fighting, players hiding on buses and Presidential intervention, this is the story of France's 2010 World Cup implosion.

World Cup 2010 was the first WC I followed. I remember the coverage on the French locker room implosion. Nobody was surprised by it and everyone was rooting against them after the robbery that brought them to the World Cup in the first place. Took the place of an Irish side that would definitely do better than they did

I’m Mexican. I was very nervous facing France in the 2010 World Cup, but I noticed Mexico was playing just as good as France, or even better, which was odd to me, because I was expecting Mexico to play a defensive style football. However, France barely qualified to the World Cup, especially in that controversial game when Henry touched did a handball inside the box, and passed the ball to one of his teammates who scored a goal afterwards. The 2010 French team was just overrated and actually very weak. Not trying to take credit off Mexico. After all, Mexico is known for giving headaches to tough teams in the group stages, and maybe France could qualify to the next round if put on a different group stage, but there’s no denying France national team were not playing as good as back in 2006 World Cup.

All of these obvious handicaps and dysfunction make 2002 all the more confusing. I don't remember anything being wrong with France aside from a few injuries. The defending World Cup and Euro Champions still had more than enough talent on paper to waltz to the final.... but they choked and crashed spectacularly.

Blame must be cast on the French federation which maintained Domenech in post after the disastrous 2008 Euro and the shameful qualification against Ireland. He had no more leadership with that generation of young players, and provoked the media and fans constantly. The French press also stabbed the team in the back when l’équipe unveiled what Anelka said to the coach in the dressing room. Then it became a political affair, and it was over. A win against South Africa in the last group match could have been enough to qualify though…

Italy thoroughly deserved to win the 2006 World Cup, they were the best and most consistent team, played 7 matches winning 6 and drawing the other one, only conceded 2 goals and not one of them was through open play,, beat the very mighty Germany in their own backyard in the semi with 2 brilliant goals.

Kinda agree, France's coaching wasn't the best.but they went to the final because they had really good players, and mainly Zidane. He was key in two of France's goals against Spain and scored one, assisted Henry and humiliated Brazil, scored against Portugal, and scored and one of the most threatening players in the final. In 1998 he was important, but not that crucial (they won without him after his suspension for kicking a Saudi player...yeah it's Zizou), and many players had been more decisive than him (Blanc against Paraguay, Thuram's two goals against Croatia).

@@icemanstormer2087 Yep. Largely forgotten that France were poor in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. But the big players turned up in the knockout.
@icemanstormer2087
@icemanstormer2087 8 ай бұрын
@@intothefray12 Well, to be fair, France has never been that great in the group stages. From 82 (when France had Platini and co.) and the defeat against England, to even 2018 who was boring af (which constrasted with the emotions of the 7 goals in the first knockout match against Argentina, literally no one expected that, just like in 2006). Even 1998 wasn't that good, with, again, that Zidane's red card against Saudi Arabia. But, now that I think about it, I realize that France never was recognized for it's coaching, Deschamps is criticized a lot, and remains just because the French Federation is a mess, which may also be why Domenech remained. Deschamps also choose players in a... interesting way to say the least, such as the Benzema case, who was totally overlooked because he wasn't popular with the coach and the FFF, even if he was one of the best strikers in the world.

Nice try but a lot of inaccuracies. As a French man myself , being in my 40’s, I have been following all that pretty closely. Nobody wanted Domenech to stay back in 2006 , in fact Zidane, Makelele and Thuram came back because France was at risk of not qualifying to the WC2006. He stayed because he reached the final so there was no valid ground to sack him. For 2008, he stayed because there was a very strong lobbying form France 98 to get someone like Blanc or Deschamps as a head coach. So maintaining Domenech was more a political decision. You forgot to mention that France lost 1-0 to the Chinese B squad in a friendly game just before going to SA… talking about poor form. Henry was planned to be dropped for the WC2010 due to poor performance at both club and international level that year but he famously begged Domenech to be included as a substitute. Anelka ’s declaration to Domenech was a result of his coach giving him negative feedback on his performance at half time and that was what led to his substitution. For the Bus incident in South Africa, the player did not train, they did not even wear their training shoes and that rose suspicion within the staff. The team had just planned to go on strike and were expecting to reach the hotel immediately after that. Instead the bus stayed parked and it led to that …embarrassing scene. It is debatable whether Blanc’s tenure was a failure. There was a team to rebuild and Spain was unbeatable then. However it decent a good first step. The relationship between the French squad and its public really improved in a game won 3-0 in Paris against Ukraine, that was 3 years after Domenech …

Thanks for watching and the extra information. Only so much I could pack into this one so always likely to miss some bits out so apologies for that. I wasn't clear enough in my talking about the World Cup in 2006. I'm aware many wanted him gone, I meant more as an outsider looking in (for example I'm English) it seemed a positive that Domenech stayed in charge. The politics were very clearly at play and wish I'd made more out of the Deschamps clamouring. I was unaware of the China B and Henry out of form information, so that's on me. Although I still find it baffling that Gignac was getting on the pitch before him. Lastly Blanc is certainly debatable. I didn't want to talk too much about it as I'd like to talk about France's Euro 2012 appearance again soon. But thank you for the information and appreciate you watching and commenting!

@@intothefray12 No worries mate. For Deschamps, he was a serious applicant in 2006 because he reached the final of the Champions league in 2004 with Monaco. Blanc was still lacking experience back then but the lobbying to get one of those 2 appointed in the media was pretty obvious. For Henry’s drop of form, look at his stats at Barcelona in 2010. He scored like 4 goals and 0 for the national team. Gignac was a up and coming striker… a bit like Giroud before joining Arsenal. He is still playing today in Mexico where he has become some sort of semi-god. Good luck for your video on Blanc. I hope you don’t judge him too harshly based on the 2012 campaign. As mentioned before, he lost to Spain who was back then unbeatable, also he is still remembered to have been the best coach for PSG in the Qatari era, both in terms of result and also quality of play. For the loss against china, just google it. I have mixed feelings about it: I was and still am embarrassed by the performance I have seen that day but on the other hand I enjoyed all our successes even more after that (You’ll know how I feel once your team stop underperforming at a wold cup).

That's just the sentence someone from within the French team bubble decided to leak to the French Press. We never knew who leaked it, even though some people think it was Domenech. What Anelka did indeed tell Domenech was "Then you can make it yourself, your **** team ! 13:48 At the time, Nicolas Anelka revealed he didn't use these exact words against Raymond Domenech. In 2018, Domenech himself revealed the sentence Anelka actually said : "Well, you can make it yourself, your s****y team ! " using the informal "you". Domenech reacted by replacing him by André-Pierre Gignac. It was because of the use of the informal "you", therefore not formally addressing and respecting his coach, that Domenech expelled Nicolas Anelka from the team. The "Go get ******, you ******" was a false version given to the French press, which revealed the incident and started the fiasco. If this private incident had stayed safe the dressing room, and dealt with differently, things could have been clearer during the fiasco.

I would love to se you talk about Morocco’s awesome we run and that it looks a bit sus that in 2018 wc the VAR wasn’t responding in any of the obvious handballs and fouls in that wc AND that we played against, the SAME national teams that we played against in the 2018 wc, in the 2022 wc and also, I think fifa was in the semifinal match 🇲🇦 vs 🇫🇷 bc there were lots of handballs and not called fouls.

Definitely on the list. I loved watching Morocco in the 2022 World Cup. It was great to see a North African nation thrive on the big stage. Thanks for watching!

Goes to show you that no matter if the signs of a problem are apparent people will let it catch on fire and wait another 4 years at another title shot for the World Cup. Whoever appointed Domenech as the skipper should not have a job in football. I don’t understand how you have world class talent but play like crap.

Would you rather have the collapse, meltdowns and misfortunes of France/Italy at the World Cups of 2010/14 (and further beyond for Italy) while being aware that you still have won recent competitions? Or be more like England/Belgium, always present but always hitting a ceiling?

Misfortunes everyday of the week. No one wants to be the best loser. No way France would rather have made the semis in 2010 but not won the World Cup in 2018. And tbf England have had their fair share of embarrassments! 2014/2016 in particular!

great job you should do italy national team decline after winning the 2006 world cup we are in 2024 and they struggle to get into euro 2024 italy are not a good team and have not been in 18 years. man 2010 i remember more than 2002 best world cup with upsets and suprises i can't believe teams like USA mexico austrailla new zealand paraguay japan all did better in terms of points and performance than italy and france especially. tbh i saw news here about the french team drama and i knew i told my family, france isn't getting out of the group the team isn't good and there too much fighting going on

I'll be honest... one thing i have noticed about European national teams that have either 1st generation immigrant players, or naturalized that have reached the pinnacle of success have always faced severe backlash and racist abuse from their own set of fans when they underperform... france, germany and england are all guilty of this... the only difference from those 3 nations is that the french media sensationalises and blows it out of proportion more than their german and english counterparts (both countries have media personalities that go overboard in their assessments) however when they do perform, they're praised and glorify the the benefits of having a multicultural team mixed with different backgrounds... calling it a key strength... 😂 very hypocritical and disingenuous

France was playing with a playmaker.....no Zidane the whole game was off....Domenech could have played Nasri as a playmaker but instead he was a moron....and he had other options too....plus Henry in 2010 was finished as a player....he was playing in the Usa....Anelka and Benzema could have been the solution and other french Strikers.....Giroud was just emerging....in 2010 2011 he was top scorer for Toulouse i think....cause in 2011 Arsenal sold V Persie and bought him....but Anelka was in his prime....

It's easy to forget just how poor this French squad is, compared to the generation before and the one after. They still had some good players of course, but man, this is the French national team. I know squad numbers doesn't mean everything but players 9, 10 and 11 in this squad were Djibril Cisse, Sidney Govou and Andre-Pierre Gignac. Shocking.

I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that Thierry Henry failed at the international level when his incompetent manager refused to give him any actual significant playing time. But yes, it was quite amazing to watch the French team implode like that and every four years I hope that it will happen once again. 😆

This was so weird to watch back in 2010. We were all distracted with Spain's performance, Messi's second chance at a WC ending with a 0-4, Uruguay and The Netherlands long way to top three... meanwhile France was imploding. That WC had a couple good things going on, but it was mostly a letdown. Italy and France were a joke, England was kicked out with a legal goal not ruled as such and we got nothing from Argentina or Brazil.

And as a French fan, I agree France probably should not have gone to that World Cup, or else should have qualified directly. Also, there is no use in blaming Thierry Henry, who surely isn't proud of his handball, and was unfortunate to finish his international career amidst this fiasco.
