The Story of Turtle Island as guarded and shared by Jacob (Mowegan) Wawatie: people coming from Turtle Island understand their existence as a harmonious passage through the land, a living organism. Perceiving Turtle Island as such changes the relationship we have with the territory.
This story will modify the way you comprehend the land, it will help us in bringing back sacred time, honoring the land we come from
Jacob Wawatie was a holy medicine man among the Anishinaabeg Confederacy. He fought against colonialism, capitalism, and the long nightmare of patriarchy. The teachings he imparted in different settings, above all the University of Ottawa, found a path tot the hearts and spirits of hundreds of enlightened students.
He received the guardianship of the story of Akiminak Nimitik (the back of the turtle) directly from his great grandmother who insisted on the sacred nature of this story. Jacob guarded and shared this story as such everytime he had the opportunity to share them, especially with younger generations,
The most important quality of this story is that this IS the natural Constitution of the sentient beings living on the back of the turtle and indigenous peoples living on these territories have to thread the land lightly and lovigly, thusly becoming Good Ancestors.

Great man don't ever think that your words do not help. I grew up in a city, realised that we needed local farmers integrated with wildlife and all locals, so I bought 6 acres...But in 11 years I have done very little farming, and my heart is full of tears, all I have achieved in farming is discovering that I cannot even build a chicken run!! My skills as a human / man, growing up in a city have been lost... However we have planted trees (as that is what she told us she needed), and helped insects and animals, so not all is lost. I was about to sell up to people who can farm (although she wants us to stay and signs tell us the same). What a wise and beautiful man...I am a white woman nearing age 60 who has always struggled with religious concepts and organized religion. Since I was around 11 or 12 years old, the only spirituality that has ever consistently rung true for me is Native spirituality. When I first heard that Natives thought everything had a spirit, I just knew that to be the truth. I feel spirits in everything; always have. This description of Turtle Island, the Grandmother and the Two Grandfathers makes more sense to me than anything I have ever heard from the other world religions. I have felt such hopelessness watching how we have destroyed the earth. But I feel blessed to have found this today and I know I will listen to it again and again. I am so glad I found this...🙏

The responsibility of an Elder is to share what she/he has gotten. That's what I do with my students, I share what I have which is what I can share. They share their immense, joyous energy which is expressed in beautiful lives. We don't have the word nor the institution of education (like in Western countries). Rather we have a life commitment to share. We learned it from non-human nations, the other sentient beings sharing their habitats with us. In return, the modern human, living in capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy, in return is trying very hard to provoke a massive extinction in their sole planet we will ever have.
