After having Nigel and the cord was still attached, when he tried to nurse right away, she pulled him away quickly and Nora cried. I've never heard an adult female cry like that. Like they were in pain. Something is very wrong w poor Nora.

If there is one thing you can count on, it is that Nature will run its course. Humans should stay away and not try to interject themselves into the life of monkeys, or any other wild animals actually. That is not to say you shouldn't have feelings for them, but they have been around for literally millions of years. They have survived quite well.

But that’s how it always works in wild environments. The monkeys on this channel have a higher than typical survival rate than is seen in strictly wild troops. The monkey troops on this channel have a diet heavily supplemented by human handouts, which artificially increases their rate of survival. In wild troops on any given year the rate of survival of infant monkeys can range from 30-70% depending on environmental conditions and availability of resources in that year.

I think the babies that do well (with Nora) are the ones who are quieter. Nora seems to be irritated by the noise, and demands (which is sad because that is what babies are like). Temperament. Nora seems to manage better with an easy or slow to warm baby as they don't cry as much. However, once a baby gets rreally hungry of course they will cry in protest. Nora is not tolerant of a needy baby. It could also be timing for the newborn. Once they get to a certain level of stress it does not go well for them. With Nora as it is her way or the highway. Once her babies get teeth and are able to feed themselves they are much better off. Thank you for this detailed assessment of Nora, I feel I understand her better now. ♡

I could be wrong but it seems to me that Nora experienced, and probably for the first time, post pardon depression with Cessa. Nan was trying to stop Nora from dragging the baby but what could Nan really do? Nothing because Nora is the matriarch. Nora didn't want the baby touching her but she didn't want Nan touching the baby. It seems as though Nora's mind was conflicted. And then each baby after got worse after Cessa. I see a lot of people are saying her nipples were sensitive. That could be but I don't believe they are so sensitive that she would treat her babies like she does. A Rhesus Macaque's nipples stretch pretty far so I cannot see that being a factor. And because of her depression, a baby that fought her or cried too much was treated badly because of the conflict within Nora. So, when she finally started feeling more herself, it was 3-4 weeks after giving birth. I have a suspicion that Cessa died from a fall with how Nora carried her so carelessly or when she was up in a tree with Cessa. Just look at Nick on that tree limb. He could have fallen at any moment because Nora was not holding on to him.

What I've learned about these animals is to much contact with people, human food, and the females are getting pregnant faster after every birth.. these poor moms probably have an idea they don't have time for mother baby bonding, moms can't afford to coddle, comfort, and really bond with baby. They probably know they have approximately 1 year to feed, teach, train, baby to survive b4 giving birth again.. I was thinking these babies are not even 6 months old and mom is probably pregnant again...

I just finished watching this video. The quality is so outstanding I thought at times I was watching a fancy show on public television. Wait, this IS on television, isn’t it!? Such professional material/footage/filming/editing/script/music - I’m impressed. I also thought females had babies every other year, I was wrong. Let me quiz myself without cheating. Spelling is probably off, but I’ll give it a shot:1/Vince 2/Cessa (who disappeared) 3/Cessela 4/Nick 5/Nigel and I think 6/ the baby he didn’t name posthumously but I forgot what order it fell into. Nan, she was usually there for Nora. I was so worried we would witness worse abuse than the little bit of dragging that was done to Cessa. Thankfully no one “fell” out of a tree. I simply adored how you briefly showed the other siblings in the background. I like how they stay together. I’ve watched other macaques do much worse to their young, much worse. I’m going to chalk it up as a form of depression as well and say “that’s just how it is in the wild” - I liked how you can obviously tell the way she treated Vince was a one time thing, he got 100% of Nora and the others, only got 80%. She did have beautiful babies, for sure! I really enjoyed watching this and getting caught up to speed by watching the rest. Thank you! Maryland US

Sad video. I’ve read newborn rhesus need to nurse every two hours to survive and not grow weak. Watching Nora all these years, she is inexplicable. Seeing her basically starve her babies to death was painful. I’m fast forwarding through a lot of this. Not sure if you included the time the Alpha male attacked her over what appeared to be the treatment of her baby and it made her furious… and worse. Primatologist don’t use terms like right or wrong, good/bad, but say adaptive and maladaptive behaviors. Adaptive behaviors insure the survival of the species and maladaptive will eventually lead to extinction. Seeing Nora with her babies, especially the one before Nigel, I can’t help but think she has developed maladaptive behaviors somewhere along the way.

I know that Macaques are the subjects of physical and mental studies due to their similarities with humans. That said, I wonder if Nora isn’t a wee bit Autistic or on the spectrum. My theory being that Nora may be hypersensitive to certain sights, smells, or sensations that she experiences when her babies are newborn infants. She seems to possess maternal instincts, but she reacts in a very awkward manner to her newborn infants’ needs. Of course, we will never have insight to her actions and motives, but there does seem to be an internal conflict in her with needing to care for them and feeling uncomfortable with caring for them when they are the most vulnerable and helpless.

I'm sorry, but absolutely not! While some animals may appear to have some similar traits, Autism is a developmental condition 9f5⁸& defined by perticular tenants or behaviors that are totally unique to humans alone! She wouldn't make eye contact, have any social interaction with other monkeys & most certainly some kind of OCD or repetitious actions. What you're speaking of, sights, sounds... pending on the case level could be seen as almost secondary...
@GGdmk
@GGdmk Жыл бұрын
@@lilgrlQ1 I appreciate your thoughts on Nora’s behavior. I cannot claim to be an expert in mental or physical conditions, but I do believe that autism is a spectrum so specific characteristics such as lack of eye contact wouldn’t be a determining factor. But I know you’re right that Nora’s behavior isn’t due to autism because her behavior is specific to her newborn infants, not ongoing. You are also right about her behavior not being OCD because her behavior isn’t a compulsive behavior. I can’t say that Nora’s behavior isn’t obsessive, but it isn’t obsessive as it applies to OCD. I will say that I have looked into autism and OCD in non primates, and although there are no claims that non human primates can develop autism, there is a great deal of information regarding the use of non human primates (specifically Rhesus Macaques) and rodents in autism research. I did not look heavily into the data simply because I realized that Nora wasn’t actually showing signs of autism. I’ve come to believe that Nora’s behavior is possibly a sensory issue, but more likely due to her disliking her infants being placed ventrally. I also wholeheartedly believe that female/mother macaques do not have the ability to understand the concept of starvation. Some are obviously aware that they lactate and that their infants and babies suckle milk, but I don’t believe they have the ability to understand that their infants’ lives are fully dependent on their ability to nurse. I actually don’t, personally, believe that mother macaques think in terms of providing sustenance to their infants and babies. I truly don’t believe that Nora has the ability to comprehend that she starved her infant and caused its death. We humans feel the need to impose human morality on Nora’s behavior toward her infants, but that is unfair because macaques are not believed to be capable of understanding that nutrition and hydration through consumption of food and water are necessary to sustain life. There is no way we can ever know what causes Nora’s odd behavior that results in the deaths of her infants, but we like to theorize. That said, I appreciate your reply and points of view about my theory. As you stated, the above mentioned disorders, at this time, are considered specific to humans. Research is ongoing with regard to the possibility that non human primates can develop autism or OCD, but you’re correct in that they don’t apply with Nora. Thank you again for your reply and hope you have a nice upcoming week!

Nora does not care about her babies. You can tell by the way she handles. I bet babies have fallen out of a tree and other times and got hurt. Maybe she didn’t care for the babies that came from certain alphas. To let your baby not sit on your feet and lock in when you’re high up in a tree is disgusting. You can tell at the end the babies were dehydrated and sucking hard for milk.

It’s so funny they all look the same beautiful, lovable and caring. I wish I could see one in person. I don’t know if I could be a mother to one, but if she would like to love one. it’s so funny how they all look the same which they probably are baby monkeys with a lovable mother you normally don’t find that, but she was a pet that one time that’s what makes you so wonderful

These are wild rhesus monkeys located in Hong Kong, not Cambodia where 99.99% of monkey videos on KZbin are from. Wild monkey mothers are loving and caring to their young, you have mistaken those abandoned pets and their descendants that most Cambodian channels film as the norm - they aren't.

I started looking at post partum psychoses. Which is often followed by depression. Add in the incredible change in hormones. I saw flat affect. Lack of concern. Lack of awareness. Little drifting off like a possible dissociative disorder. Bursts out of nowhere. Human literature describes it as being related to bipolar onset. They also mention traumatic births. And interestingly enough, having had a past history of this response postpartum, is potential indicator of it recurring. Hmmm. I can’t hate Nora. I had an adult child with schizophrenia and have witnessed this up very close.

Nope nothing wrong with that little baby other than the misfortune of being born to a psycho monkey mom. I really think Nora’s strong predisposition as an alpha leader overshadows her natural mothering instincts. If Nora were a human she would likely choose not to have children and just focus on her alpha status. Too bad Nora has no control of her reproductive life and has to bear a new baby every year that she doesn’t want and will not care for. Nora needs a tattoo… Must be hard for the young sterilized monkeys, who long to care for a baby, to watch Nora being so abusive and neglectful.,….and not be able to intervene or help the babies. Not sure about the postpartum theory. Nora seems to have little instincts for love or care of the other monkeys too.But the way she tortures little newborns by crushing dragging and starving is heartbreaking. To have her newborn hanging on, begging dear life for any nourishment, and then to continue to torture the poor thing until their spirit gives up …well it’s beyond cruel … I think she’s a soulless sadistic monkey…. Or else Why wouldn’t she just leave the poor thing on the ground and allow it to be cared for by Nan or another who likely would….. God help them all.

it seems to me, the babies that adapt to her aggression with a quiet and reserved nature do much better. I have seen your videos were Nana tries to intervene when Nora loses her cool. It really shows that Nora does have some issues, that even Nana can see in her primate world. It is hard to not have some emotion when you see Nora acting like the monster mom from today's world, that seem to suffer from the baby blues or whatever society is calling it. It's nature and it's life. Thanks for the great video🙂✌

Well said and I agree, the babies who don't fuss or directly resist Nora, but instead remain calm and persist in taking advantage when nursing opportunities appear seem to fare best. I too remember Nan keeping an eye on Nora, didn't she smack or nudge her once last year? If it was shown in this video I must've been fast forwarding ahead, just can't bear watching babies being mistreated. One thing I've liked about Arroz being a few months behind is that when watching/skipping thorough difficult footage I can rationalize that the baby is no longer suffering. Either Nora's depression ended and the baby is happily thriving, or it has already joined Kailey, Charlotte, Cessa and all the other beloved angel babies joyfully playing together for eternity where they are loved, spoiled and never suffer again. I sure hope Nora's postpartum depression goes MIA this year (please, please, please ), otherwise I'll have to fast forward a lot until the baby pulls through (hopefully). I don't hate Nora, I know it's not her fault she has a condition that robs her of her normal mothering instincts. Same as Tina and Gypsy, I actually have a lot of sympathy for all them even though I can't bear to watch their babies suffer.

I truly believe Nora has postpartum. It's usually not bad with first pregnancy but can become worse with each pregnancy. It's getting worse because she keeps getting pregnant without stopping. Also she seems to have more of a problem with the girls then boys. The difference in the hormones can make a difference to. If she doesn't quit getting pregnant she will only get worse each time. People need to remember this is not her fault. She is suffering and there is nothing that can be done for her. Just pray for the babies and Nora.

I jus seen this channel today n this is the 2nd video I seen so far. Very good video n sad at the same time. But she did better with the lil boys as babies except for the 1lil girl. It's hard to blev but the boys was quieter than the girls when they wasn't able to nurse, I blev that's why the boys lived n the 1lil girl didn't throw to much of a fit so that helped her. Well it's time to go back to watchin more of these videos.

I kind of feel like she is easier with the boys than she is with the girls. I believe she had one girl make it. But it seems like the boys did much better than the girls did. She probably has some kind of postpartum something. I'm so glad I watched this, I've been watching other shows that aren't showing as much violence towards the babies by the moms. So I'm very thankful that I found this. No you can't answer all the questions but that's okay you aren't there to be able to figure everything out. If you could you would fix all the monkeys. She does seem to like babies that are quieter and less fuss. But with monkeys you can't have a baby that's always on its best behavior. So my vote goes to maybe a little psychological problem. Plus her first one was the best baby you could have, and the rest of them held up to his standards. Your video for 2022 was not the next video that came up so I will have to kind of look for it. Keep doing what you're doing it seems like you're a good person and you seem to care.

Research has shown that if a baby is abused , it will grow up and abuse. What you have shown is not nearly as bad as some mother’s behavior where they bite and torment the little ones. Infamous Rozy was okay with her first baby, but when she had a hybrid she ignored it and threw it out of a tree three times before finally killing it. She is a wonderful mother to her next baby Rockstar, so who knows?! Maybe postpartum depression, maybe the doomed children had something wrong with them and were weeded out. Nature is unpredictable.

In the same situations as Nora, we found a mom from the car park troop who has given birth to her fourth baby. She is not willing to nurse the newborn baby, is not gentle, and often holds the baby upside down and strikes it on the ground. The baby is 10 days old today and is growing slowly, clearly exhibiting less activity compared to other newborns of the same age. We hope the mom regains her senses soon and that the little one can be saved. 😭

I said somewhat the same. They have been very dark haired and did have a dif look about them. I'm thinking the father of those isn't the one she would have chosen first. Perhaps it's a bloodline she doesn't feel is viable. The little gingers seem to do better from the start and the less tantrums and more chill the baby is the easier it is for them to feed. The loud ones thay struggle are not allowed to suckle hardly at all. They seem to have the opposite effect on her. The fits they pitch supposed to make her hug them closer and let them nurse and calm down but seems to affect her the complete opposite way

Is it possible that her being the Matriarch she doesn't want any weakness in her babies? Like she doesn't value them if they are too needy... it would make her look weak too the others perhaps. Maybe it's something more like that... animal instinct. All the babies that made it were much stronger and picked up on how to ride etc. Just my thoughts. I think the babies that are quiet, strong, and don't fight mom are the ones that survive. Nora seems to get more upset and less willing to nurse when her babies cry and cry (you can't blame them all they want is to nurse) I still think it has something to do with her nipples it's like she can't even stand the thought of them being touched. But what do I know.

I have a theory about Nora. If Vince was her 1st born. It is possible Nora did not want to make that mistake again. Even possible the troop lost some respect for her. Her demeanor with the 2nd baby seams to be confused and uneasy. She looks like she doesn't know what to do. The mother in her wants to love the baby, but her love spoiled one baby and she couldn't let that happen again.

This almost seems like textbook baby blues minus the higher cognitive reasoning of humans. When you have the baby blues or post partum depression there is an internal battle of " I want my baby" and get it away from Me. And commonly the blues clears up in 2-4 weeks as hormones stabilize. Depression can last longer sometimes years like in my case. I had severe extreme life stressor when my youngest was born. I still battle my post partum depression and an urge to pull away from my children. Thanks to my higher cognitive reasoning, and a supportive multigenerational family and my husband, I can take time to myself when needed and not deteriorate my relationship with my children. Other primates don't have the benefit for higher cognitive thought, counseling, medication etc, that we as humans do. They go on instinct, but with the biological similarities between all primates, it wouldn't surprise me if they sometimes have the same mental conditions we do. Life hardships are not the only thing that leads to depression, sometimes it's chemical. A person can have the perfect upbringing and adult life without a single hardship and still battle crippling depression. I think she has propensity to post partum depression.
