Helicopters don't fight other helicopters that's just Hollywood nonsense. When you need to take out attack helicopters you use jets or manpads, not other helicopters. Also the AH-1 was one of the first military aircraft to use fly by wire. It used the same rotor mechanics as the UH-1 but they removed the mechanical stabilizer bar and instead it used a box containing three mechanical gyro sensors in the Z/Y/Z axis connected to the rotor and yaw actuators and the pilot controls fed into the gyro box which in turn controlled the helicopter. That's basically the same way multirotor drones are stabilized today but this was the 1950's

In the early 1980s, while operating tanks in Germany, I argued the idea that the .50 caliber machine gun was not the appropriate weapon to be used against the Hind. I suggested that the 105 mm cannon on our M60A3 tanks shooting the SABOT round would be the best weapon. With an extremely long range and traveling at several thousand feet per second, it would make short work of a Hind and its armor. The idea was sent to Ft. Knox to be reviewed and was eventually accepted as a part of gunnery doctrine. I don’t know if it still is.
@cideltacommand716912 күн бұрын
That would be a terrible idea. A tank usually dosent have depression for a shot on a helicopter. Secondly if it is hit, it might just overpenetrate and fly out the other side, this means it needs a direct hit on like the engines or cockpit/tail to down. Us army isn't very bright is it. I've dealt with and faced the HIND many times during the Yugo Wars. It is an amazing aircraft. And it can scare the Hell out of you when it flies over. Most people don't realize how big it is...but how quiet it can be. You don't hear it coming until it's right up on you...but it's pretty loud once you're behind it. When it's flying convoy, it sounds normal, but when in "attack" mode, it's quiet. It is literally a flying tank. I have alot of respect for the HIND. I've seen firsthand the amount of destruction a single HIND can cause.

I watched two Mi-24Ds ambush three T-72s. The HINDs hovered behind a section of trees while the T-72s rolled towards them without knowing they were there. At 500m, the HINDs popped up and hit the three T-72s. The HINDs smoked all three tanks in less than two minutes and then flew off like nothing happened. This was in the high hills and low mountains of South Central Bosnia, a few miles outside the city of Mostar. The whole thing took just a few minutes and then they were gone. Left three burning wrecks.

The Hind is my favorite too. It’s the pinnacle of the everything military rotary wing gunship. it’s biggest flaw is probably it’s low top speed, but it had/has everything else. I love me some Apache and AH-1Z/UH-1Y, but the Hind “Krokodil” is most interesting. I love its proportions, too.

We use low-level flight modes to hide our presence on the battlefield. This thing is waaay to fat! It's one of the..., sorry the main reasons they've be shot down in huge numbers. Not sure why all the Hind fans don't seem to recognize that "FACT". How impressive can the be since they've been literally been dropping like flies in the Ukraine.

Good video. I believe the helicopter at 11:57 is a kamov hormone, which is another interesting Soviet era bird.

there were some reports that during Afghan of friendly fire from a BMP-2's 30mm on a Mi-24 and it didnt damaged the aircraft critically . Plus there were multiple reports of them surviving direct hits from RPGs and the occasional stinger . Mi-24's were truly a beast of its time , literally the armor of a BMP but could have flew 300kmph with a full squad inside and with 4 S-8 rockets pods

Yea, except for stingers. Those tend to hit directly midships / exhaust and cut them in half.

There is no such thing as an indestructible piece of tactical military equipment. All of these machines (whether a Soviet Hind or a US Army Bradley) are specifically built with the expectation that they will be struck by the enemy. The idea is to protect the operators WHEN this happens.

Mi-24 "Hind" will always be a badass machine and have a special place in my heart even when the Russians have a newer, more deadly, unique and safe helicopter like the Ka-52 "Alligator"! (which also have a special place in my heart hehe)

What about GRU Spetznaz theft of Super Cobra in Vietnam? Did that have a factor?
@Renaissance_Kamikaze13 күн бұрын
Thank you someone said it And yes the Super Cobra was part of the design process, particular in offensive anti helicopter aspects of the design far as we know Soviet vs NATO heli doctrine was different

Or the Libyan hind we took from chad
@VisibilityFoggy13 күн бұрын
@@PhilStewart-xf9rp I don't believe the Hind was used toward the design of any US or European helicopter airframes (since none like the Hind were ever built). The purpose of stealing the Hind from Chad was to experiment with ways to shoot it down - not replicate it. It's tough to say whether a "western" Hind would have been more or less effective than developing the Apache and Black Hawk to essentially work in tandem. It's even more interesting that no European operators built an analogue to it, especially the French, who have always had innovative helicopter developments and tend to deviate a bit from the conventional American doctrines. Even in Russian service, they seem to be moving toward the Mi-28 and Ka-52 working in tandem with Mi-8/17s in the transport role.
@PhilStewart-xf9rp13 күн бұрын
@VisibilityFoggy never even insinuated that the U.S.A. would need to re-appropriate a Soviet design of any piece of military hardware, I was just stating that we got 1 of their's because someone stated like it was some great military coup for them getting a super-cobra. He'll we had and flew several different Soviet aircraft ( mig, sukoi?tuplalov)as real adversary acm training for our guys. Hell the Russians stole a B-29 and soo copied it down to the boeing emblem on the yoke and the flight crew's personal Kodak camera.

@@PhilStewart-xf9rp Soviet/Russian weapons are better, you should show more respect, is not like the december 4 2011 a RQ-170 was hacked and steal while flying in middle east, and steal and studied by Iran.

Its a great unforgettable Heli. BUT as all engineering marvels, it had its own limits. You should have mentioned those. It was UNABLE to do vertical takeoff and hover with combat weapons load. It was UNABLE to take any soldiers while having ANY combat load. The engines always lacked power and it needed those tiny wings to fly. Those issues were a problem especially in hot and high areas. On sandy areas the filters had to be used and available power was even smaller...
