tomscott.com - / tomscott - Under the Elbe river in Hamburg, Germany, lies the Old Elbe Tunnel in St Pauli. Like early 20th century tunnels around the world, it has lifts or stairs to take you down and under the river. But this is on a whole different scale to those you might have seen elsewhere...
And go see Miniatur Wunderland, if you haven't already: • Miniatur Wunderland **...

I wish there'd been a camera filming my reaction the first time I walked into the entrance of the Elbtunnel. The sheer scale of the place, and the stairs that seemed to just be stuck precariously to the wall, made my jaw literally drop.

***** Ah, sorry. Heard an apostrophe. BariumCobaltNitrog3n Must have first read about it in McCullough's The Great Bridge. Most of the casualties of caisson disease were doubtlessly unrecorded, since the symptoms are not immediately apparent and easily mistakable. Compressed air was used in excavations since at least the 1850s to prevent water seepage. Thankfully, modern pile foundations and tunnel boring machines largely deprecated such techniques by the latter half of the 20th century.

to be fair, the cyclist barely goes over the walking speed. at this point, the only difference between him pushing the bike and riding it, is that pushing it takes up more space. the "no cycling" is there to prevent collisions and signal that this road it for pedestrians. driving a bike the at walking speed if it's not too full does not pose any risk or inconveniences anyone.

Visited Hamburg on a business trip, and that Old Elbe Tunnel was on my list of absolute must-see places, since it was shown on some movie (don't remember which one, maybe some 007 or other cold war flick). If I had been lucky enough to travel to Hamburg, I probably wouldn’t have given it much thought, though that’s kind of the point. With a lot of good infrastructure you don’t need to think about it because it just works. Thank you for highlighting this amazing place, I hope to encourage myself to more often appreciate the everyday wonders that keep my day running smoothly. Not all the time however, as I don’t think I could hold an air of wonderment all day, that would be exhausting.

One of the two St Pauli Elbtunnel tubes has undergone renovation and re-opened just about a year ago. They really did a great job. The other tube is now closed for renovation. Motorized traffic is now thankfully no longer allowed (at least until the renovation is completed, but it looks like the motorized-traffic ban will stay.) The tunnel has simply never been designed for cars: They take up too much space, produce too much dirt and noise and cause damage to the street which increases the maintenance costs for the tunnel. (Actually, all of this is true for car traffic in urban areas in general. ;-))

You _could_ build a bridge but the bridge would have to be massively tall for ships to pass under (or utilize the drawbridge) which in many cases could easily be more expensive. Thought it's usually favored due to it being the simplest solution, not because it's the cheapest.

Goes to Hamburg, goes to the tunnel. Goes to the minature train thingy, and don't mention the Hamburg Dungeon directly underneath, Yes, it's modeled after the London Dungeon, yes it's even owned by the same company. But it focuses more on (northern)german themes

There aren't really any, besides the "hafenfähren" (ferries that are a part of regular public transport) the closest ways to cross are 4q kilometres in each direction, and on of them is limited to cars. It's the most western foot/bike crossing on the entire river (that isn't by ferry)

I know it's too late, but on your way from Hamburg Airport to St. Pauli you should have changed trains in Barmbek and travel on the U3 to Landungsbrücken. Much more enjoyable ride with many scenic views!

I recently started bouldering again, and I live in the South of Hamburg and have a bicycle, so I thought "why not take my bicycle to the city centre" which led me right through the old elbe tunnel. I love riding through there, ever since they banned cars from using it a while ago, its full of cyclists!

What's the benefit of that kind of lift over something like a bridge? It seems expensive to build and costly to maintain, much more so than simply building over the river.
@toledoseahawks3348
@toledoseahawks3348 3 жыл бұрын
Cheaper than a bridge, as a bridge even in 1904 must have had a clear height of at minimum 55m. Lifts aren't so expensive, but a tunnel is. But still cheaper. Even when another Way for crossing the Elbe in the 1970s was needed, they again choose the tunnel (but without a lift)

Damn, I've been to Hamburg, including the miniature wonderland, bombed out cathedral and U-bahn (but not the submarine, as our group got somehow split up and my half got lost in the backstreets and random cool little bars instead), but I had no idea that this tunnel existed...

I went to Hamburg, visited Miniature Wonderland and the bombed out cathedral. Knew of a tunnel but not how interesting it would be, for me at least, probably not the rest of the family. So disappointed I didn't know about the submarine museum, will have to go back now. Not sure I should tell my son what we missed......

Moorb0y52, it doesn‘t take that long. Perhaps about a minute. I can’t remember it exactly. But it works. However, there are other river crossings nearby. So only a few people use it nowadays.
I promise this story about microwaves is interesting.
