In 2014 concept art leaked for what appeared to be an Arabian flavoured Disney park, featuring cars land, a star wars land and an elaborate 5-star hotel within the castle.

As nice as the art looks, I don't like how tightly packed together everything is. It breaks character with the immersive theming and sightlines (Cars Land directly next to the castle? Really?). It also looks way too small, maybe even smaller than Hong Kong's.

Beautiful concept but it was for the best that it was never built in the end... The Dubai bubble burst very quickly as evident by the poor attendance and standard of the parks there now. Would have been embarassing for Disney and Universal to be operating ghost town parks over there.

There’s also the question of the entire UAE’s appalling record on human rights. An area where journalists are silenced and political activists are “disappeared,” where victims of sexual assaults are themselves charged with crimes in order to intimidate them into silence, where all major projects are built by workers who’ve had their passports confiscated and who are now trapped in de facto slave labor, is going to find drawing tourist dollars difficult. Maybe some of Dubai’s massive sovereign wealth fund would be better spent enacting democratic and human rights reforms across all the emirates.

Okay so hear me out because this is a long concept. To enter the queue you walk through the tiger’s mouth and as you do, you hear a voice saying, “touch nothing but the lamp”. Once inside, the queue walls look like a cave but they’re covered with jewels and you see piles of glittering gold and statues and things like that everywhere. At one point in the queue, you see Aladdin and Abu, but only in shadow form as projections on a wall, as if they are walking with you and you can see their shadow because of the torch light. You then see the shadow of the magic carpet rise up and fly behind them. When you get to the loading dock, it’s the biggest space yet. You hear Aladdin encourage you to hop on the carpet. This would be coaster cars painted with the carpet design on the sides. You board your vehicle, then pull forward and hear Aladdin say, “let’s go!” You launch off. You are still in a cave setting, but Aladdin is projected along side you to look like you all are flying. He says, through speakers by your head, “let’s find that lamp and get out of here!” You speed around the cave doing tight turns and loops and all sorts of tricks. You hear Aladdin say, “there it is!” As the lamp on the tall pile of rocks comes into focus. You slow down and in the next scene, an animatronic Aladdin is seen about to grab the lamp when the lighting changes and everything starts to rumble. We see a light illuminate an animatronic Abu holding the red jewel. We hear the angry tiger voice say his line from the movie, I can’t quite remember it at the moment, but using the 2 1/2 D tech from Runaway Railway, projections make it look like everything is starting to melt and turn to lava. We hear Aladdin yell to “hurry out of here” and once again, we launch off, but backwards! We race through the cave again with lava all around us. We slow down when we get to an animatronic Abu about to be swallowed by lava. He is slightly lower than our view point. The train is situated on a drop track so it actually drops, then we hear Aladdin say, “we got him! Let’s move!” And we launch one more time. We race to the finish and as we pull into a separate unloading station from the loading station, we hear Aladdin say. “Now what are we going to do? I guess we’re stuck in here. Wait, what’s this writing on the lamp?” As you walk out through a cave like tunnel, there’s one final twist, the Genie. We see his shadow emerge from the lamp then as you exit the tunnel into a shop because, well, it’s Disney, they either just have a set of blue hands and a speaker playing his voice or a semi-animatronic that is really just a static figure made to look like it’s pulling open the exit, but his head is an animatronic and it says different phrases about providing a way out. I’d love to see something like this come to fruition. It would be an indoor coaster with some traditional dark ride elements and while I’m typically not a huge fan of screens or projection mapping for rides, I think it would fit well with this concept. I borrowed a bit from Hagrid’s coaster, but being completely indoors definitely makes it different.

The most important thing to note is that the “concept art” was nothing more than a basic presentation tool made by a developer to pitch their hope for a theme park to Disney. It had little to no input from anyone at the Walt Disney Company and was created by an entirely separate firm and had no official license behind it.

@Hyperskreem 82 not really, just think 90% of the parks in Dubai look boring or poorly planned out, this would have been another park to add to that list. We've had veterans come back from deployment and tell us Kandahar was nicer, only because of how dry it was. I'm not sure where that 75-f average keeps getting measured at, perhaps Lindberh field, a coastal airport with a breeze often regarded as the focal point of all temperature measurements, and a terribly unfair place to evaluate our city. :-( Still, I get your point. Dubai is hot. I just can't get over how many people I meet who come here and say it's worse.

Looks cramped, as others have said, but my concern wouldn't even be for the sight lines or narrative theming, but future growth. With a park so tightly packed and every space covered, they left no room for future expansion projects, if the park had been built and gone well. the interiors could be repurposed and rethemed easily enough, but they left little space for new attractions. Disney parks need more land area than what was shown here.

Because it looks completely huge compared with the rest of the park, like, if the hotel was the main attraction and the rest was just complementing it. But both it’s new one and Shanghai are so generic. It’d be amazing to get a full Sultans castle somewhere someday. Or a Norwegian style. Anyway! Great video. Reminds me a lot of the Gold Coast “Disney” resort from a few years ago, which Disney seemingly had no idea about. People want to attract Disney, but they fail to realise that the way to attract Disney is long term financial guarantees.

It almost seems like more of Magic Kingdom style park crossed with a "second gate". Yeah it's a shame the castle would have just had elements of Arabian design rather than being a full on Arabian Castle, something like the Sultan's Palace from Aladdin! - Luke

ReviewTyme Absolutely right in the second gate vibes. It’s a bit DCA 1.0. And the Star Wars land is laughable knowing what we know now, but as a SW overlay Tomorrowland it’s not that far fetched. Great video guys 👍

I thought Disney Dubai was a recent idea where Iger was discussing it. It was around the time SeaWorld Abu Dhabi was announced

Honestly, this park looks quite boring with little to do. Disney under Iger and now Chapek has been so uninspired because they really don't understand the parks. I'm glad that this never came to fruition. I think Dubai is a great example for why the power of IP isn't nearly as strong as Disney thinks it is.
@1992disney
@1992disney 4 жыл бұрын
You said it. They only care about profit now and nothing else. Quality, timelessness, authenticity, and consistency mean nothing to them anymore. That's exactly why there has been less original attractions and themed-lands and more IP-based ones since within the past decade. Prior to Chapek being hired as Disney Park Chairman, Tom Staggs did at least do a better job at running the parks than Chapek had. Unfortunately, Iger fired Staggs for "constantly failing to meet Iger's standards". That's why he replaced Staggs with Chapek. He wanted someone who's just like him and that's why he made Chapek the new CEO. And as soon as Iger finally retires from Disney for good at the end of next year, Chapek is gonna pick up right where Iger left off and continue to run Walt's beloved company to the ground. Disney may never become great again as long horrible and greedy people like Chapek are in positions of power and that's really sad. Thankfully though, former Disney World Ambassador, Josh D'Amaro has recently been named as the new Chairman of Disney Parks. Let's hope that when all the parks reopen, he'll do a much, much better job at running the entire Disney Parks division than Chapek did and maybe undo all the damage that Chapek had done to the parks, especially California Adventure and Epcot. He at least cares about the fans and takes guest service seriously unlike Chapek. Chapek needs to be fired sooner than later, if you ask me.

Dubai and its theme parks are incredibly interesting. I don't know how I got to researching, but when I did, I found that Dubai has around 8 theme parks, and if you look up any video of them on youtube, they are completely empty! it's insane. I read on some blogs that people think something suspicious is going on, but I think the people of Dubai just don't want to go to theme parks...

Dear parents! Let the kids choose their favourite Disney Parks souvenirs!!! When the kids are very good, then they deserve more souvenirs. Every good behaviour kid should have 1-2 bags of Disney Parks souvenirs: plush toys, toys, mini figures, bubble blower, Mickey ears, t-shirts, jacket, drinking bottle, and some pins or magnets and etc. Please buy only those Disney Parks souvenirs, what the kids very want!!!! I know many Disney souvenirs are very expensive, but when the kids are very good all the times, then sometimes they deserve these things!!! Please be kind parents and make Your kids very happy with these Disney Parks souvenirs, what the kids have chosen and don’t say NO all the times, when the kids very deserves those Disney Parks souvenirs for good behaviour!!!

Building a theme park in Dubai is like building a theme park on Mars. Florida is already pushing it when it comes to overall heat and humidity, but whoever pushed for these concept designs must really dislike flying first class to Florida, or he really likes his life on Mars.

IMO, there are some consideration why Disneyland will never built on Dubai: 1. Sharia Law (which there are some restriction especially for Westerners. E.g, during the Ramadan season, food stalls are restricting their operation time) 2. The population (UAE is "only" 9 million population, which i doubt it could be a success) 3. Tourist market (Most of the people traveling with Emirates & Etihad Airways (the 2 main carriers of UAE) are dominantly transit or stopover in UAE since tourist places in UAE are not very interesting)
