The thing this film does, satire wise, is turn the "normal" thing (a parent abusing a child) to abnormal (a child abusing a parent). Then you have to ask yourself, "Why is parents abusing their children 'normal' and this is weird?" It makes you start from scratch about what often happens in abusive households.

The Strange Thing About the Johnsons doesn't watch like a satire at all. I also don't get the sense that the father molested his child, and is somehow responsible for this. There isn't much support for that idea in the film, and the message seems to more clearly be the idea that rape is a devestating act that can damage anybody from any walk of life, and it reverse the roles and genders to further highlight that point. I think it would undercut the film if the father had anything to do with his son's behavior as that would defeat the message by verging on the side of victim blaming. It would suddenly stop being about incestuous rape being able to harm anyone and becomes more about the father's choices leading to his own problems, which would be a poorly conceived message if it was a father raping his daughter. On the flip side, I think the structure hurts the piece because it watches a little bit too much like a horror film with a twist as opposed to a character drama dealing with a horrifying issue. I get that it was only 30 minutes, but I think even within that time constraint that better command over its narrative (e.g. visual motifs, lines of dialogue, etc.) would better help to convey its message. As is, the communication process is a little muddled and it can, unfortunately, leave you scratching your head at just what the film is trying to say.

Michelle Cné Brown That's not convincing. Rapists are known to include their victim as a part of the reason for the crime as well. ("You made me do this." "You are to blame as well." etc.) This is par for the course for victimizers. There's no significant evidence that the father started it, and if you flip the roles and swap out his gender then nobody would be saying that the victim started it and in no way would consider it a satire. Making the father responsible in any way undercuts the film and becomes drastically less interesting.

When he became older and stronger than his father he began taping! As the mother stated the son prom night was the first time he raped his father! As you can tell from the rest of this movie nothing was ever told for fear of the father being the blame and the son threatening him! Their image was more important to them to maintain! The mother burns the book in the end! Had she said something on the son wedding day maybe it wouldn't have gotten that far!

What I'm getting from this is a role reversal. Had the dad's character been replaced with a little girl no one would've considered that this was satire. I've seen critics say that victimizing a cute girl is easy emotional manipulation, and had it been an ugly guy no one would've cared. honestly I think that what makes this a parody is that typically coming of age discussions between parents and their children usually aren't that complicated after.....I really think what made it satirical in the first place was posing the idea that a parent thinking that what their kid is doing is the same as every other kid and he unknowingly gave the green light for his son to sexualize his dad.....and I think that it works as a satire because there was nothing the dad did to warrant it...that one conversation that he thought was innocent led to him being miserable for the rest of his short life.

After seeing the movie, I completely agree with Korey on how the film raises questions. A PLETHORA of questions. The time jump alone leaves the true origins of the abuse up in the air. The son accuses the dad of starting it, but then again he's a completely unreliable character. The dad writes how he "must first blame myself" and implies he did something wrong to initiate, but then again he could just be talking about a fault in parenting. Could've been the father's neglect to address the issue, could've been something - however small - he did to help it along, possibly out of intrigue. Hell, sometime during the 14 year time jump the dad may have been going through problems with the wife and took out some level of sexual energy on the son. I'm getting farther away from what the movie can actually implicate now, but that's how open ended it is. And while I also recoiled with Martin at the thought of victim blaming, this is a special case because of the father-son relationship coupled with how the story was written. I've never even THOUGHT about this type of situation in depth until this review. So with that being said, I agree this messed up film gets a lot of points for being different and shocking, but doing it with a level of professionalism (cinematography, acting, writing).

The message in the movie from the creator is supposed to be like a role reversal on molestation and rape. And how you never know what's happening behind closed doors. While the victim is suffering in silence and there are some scenes that were removed. But in one of the scenes the son asked the dad if he could help wash his back. The father doesn't want, he helps anyway because it's his son. It gets real disgusting the son starts masturbating while his dad washes his back and he forces his dad to keep washing his back until he finishes masturbating. Like, remember at the scene in the movie at dinner. Where the son tries to offer the father a drink and he doesn't accept it. The reason behind that is because of the son years ago had brought a bear for his father and which he drugged it, then raped his dad. I had to look this movie up and came across a video of the creator talking and explaining more about it. He talked about the scenes that were removed that we don't see. The dad's only crime is he didn't get his son any help. The Dad didn't know that his son had these sick fantasy about him. Like when he said you started this, he's referring to when his dad giving him the talk at the beginning of the movie. In the son's mind, he was taking it to think of his father like that was okay. The Dad feels guilty because he didn't get his son help. or wasn't able to stop him.

I just watched this movie. At first, it grossed me out, but then it hit me: I think this movie is a metaphor for permissive parenting, particularly never saying no to any demand of a child. Evidence: Prom is the most expensive moment of high school. Why did the mom choose to remember prom as the time dad was crying? Because the son raped him. Not physically, but financially. There was no expense spared. The wedding, which is traditionally paid for by the bride's parents, is paid for by the groom's dad. Again, no expense is spared. The dad couldn't say no and raped again. In Cocoon Man, the dad blames himself. On a straight viewing, it could be that he is a typical victim, blaming himself. But what if he's blaming himself for being too permissive as a parent, saying yes to his son's every whim? The opening has the dad catch his son masturbating. He didn't overreact, which is fine, but he also let him keep going and apologized for coming into a room that he pays for! It shows his permissive nature very early on. The bath scene clinches this idea. Here is a grown man, in his own house, afraid of his son. I do think it is a role reversal on molestation of kids. It seems so insane that a dad would rape his son right? Equally insane is the son raping his dad. Like victim blaming. When women were raped they were asked what they did to iniate or invite themselves to be violated. Other than the fact that people rarely believe male rape victims and how the dad is dissociating. Look at this movie with the roles reversed. A child catches his dad in a sexual situation and questions it. It's weirdly creepy and touchy. But the dad is normalizing it. Saying the behavior is okay.(in the movie the dad might have indirectly assured the son that jerking off to your dad is okay when the dad was just saying masturbation is normal and his gentleness might have made the son think it was okay and his dad liked him back) the dad being very possessive of the kid and always exerting control. Always finding an excuse. To the point where the kid is desensitized to the behavior and embarrassed. Abusers take away everything so that they are all the abused have. Remind them that only they care so they are broken. The dad trying to hang onto his love for his wife and rejecting his son. A child telling someone they are abused especially in the family is difficult. The possibility of what will happen breaks them even more and it's often why abused kids run away. They don't want to ruin the family. Like pissing your pants but being so embarrassed you lay there. Or not knowing an answer but prefering to stay quiet rather than ask for help. Or being warm and not leaving the bed. You don't want to break everyone else'ss comfort and abusers constantly enforce these ideas. They play the good guy and hurt you all at the same time. You want to apologize to save face and just don't try again. A child being raped and that being ignored by someone who doesn't want to destroy their comfort either. If they know i know they'll hurt me. Or our whole family will be broken. So they ignore it. The child feeling they have no place to go but sick of the life they are living runs away and dies. Whether from being homeless sex trafficking or whatever else. They are called problem kids and no one looks for them. No one listens to them. It's easy for them to kill themselves which often pushes those who knew over the edge. But they are an accomplice as well. They didn't help them. The son talking about how it takes two to tango when he raped his dad she's you can force somebody to dance. What he saw as in invitation was his dad trying to be a good dad. Trying to not tear apart his family. And it spiraled out of control

They hinted that the father did something with his son twice. Once when he actually looks down at his son's crotch, and again when he's writing his autobiography. In the autobiography he said that they were both at fault - so with that and the son saying, "You started this" strongly suggests that the father initiated this. I think that the son had some problems with his sexuality and was attracted to the father. His father found out about the attraction, did something about it, and then it kept going even when the father wanted to stop.

Interesting, I didn't get that at all. When the dad typed in his confession that he was guilty too I think they were trying to show him rationalise the crime like a lot of rape victims do. I think his only fault was to not set any boundaries with his son from a young age which gave his son this misguided sense that his dad could be his lover too. When the son says "you started this" I think its trying to show the rapist blame the victim for the crime.

The Dad didn't do anything at all to his son, the message in the movie from the creator is supposed to be like a role reversal on molestation and rape. And how you never know what's happening behind closed doors. While the victim is suffering in silence and there are some scenes that were removed. But in one of the scenes the son asked the dad if he could help wash his back. The father doesn't want, he helps anyway because it's his son. It gets real disgusting the son starts masturbating while his dad washes his back and he forces his dad to keep washing his back until he finishes masturbating. Like, remember at the scene in the movie at dinner. Where the son tries to offer the father a drink and he doesn't accept it. The reason behind that is because of the son years ago had brought a bear for his father and which he drugged it, then raped his dad. I had to look this movie up and came across a video of the creator talking and explaining more about it. He talked about the scenes that were removed that we don't see. The dad's only crime is he didn't get his son any help.

the scene where the son comes through the bathroom door is wilddd...because before this scene I was laughing in disbelief and then he comes through the door and im like oh SHIT what have I gotten myself into...IS THIS A HORROR MOVIE? I actually loved this short because it was soooo far fetched and he had the balls to deliver this...and this is something sooooo taboo in a black family to even discuss. and ARI went straight for it...while it is sick and disturbing it is funny and terrifying all at the same time.

It's about child molesting, and child rape in reverse.. it's meant to disturb, but in reverse far as the theme.. the movie was very disturbing but a very unique look at something so *taboo*
