I'm curious about the cancer stats. Is there not as many backyard breeders in Britain than here? We adopted our sweet Miss Macy from a family that bought her from a puppy mill. They bought her to breed but she never had puppies and she was 7 when we adopted her. They had never spade her. She had bone spurs and eventually had a splenectomy, developed osteoarthritis and sarcoma. She did live just passed her 14th birthday. I see lots of adds for Goldens and wonder if a lot of their health issues come from backyard breeding.

I have this breed. He is a very loving, jealous, lazy, and food motivated dog. I would recommend this mix for people who like a larger dog while living in the city. He still loves his walks, but anything over 2 miles and he's hitting the cold linoleum floor, belly first while napping as soon as we get back.

We know have a ten month old nutter who is golden cream. He is the completely different to our other boy. Which is good as no comparison between them. He also is very loved.

We have a cream golden. She’s 10 months old and a delight. My sister in law’s family has a 2 year old gold golden and they just met for the first time. Our girl is definitely more chill even though she’s younger, but both are the sweetest dogs. We actually didn’t set out to get a cream but the breeder was the most professional and informative of the ones we looked at so we went with them :)

We have had many goldens over the last 30 years. Each one had a different personality and all were fabulous dogs. Currently we have a 4 year old 'english cream' Smartest, most trustworthy dog I have ever seen. His comprehension of the English language never ceases to amaze me. Totally non destructive. He still plays with stuffed toys he had when he was a puppy. On the other hand he is the least lovey dovey golden we have ever had. He wants to be near you but not on top of you. He is like a person. We could not love him more!

I live in England and enjoy your videos; they are very useful and informative. I have had three Goldens: one female and two males. My first was a very dark gold. My second was light gold. My third is what you would probably describe as an English Golden Retriever, almost white cream in colour. All my Goldens were born and bred in England. The first two each lived to fourteen years and although one developed testicular cancer it did not kill him. My present Golden is just over a year old so I look forward to another thirteen years with him. In England the only distinction usually made between different types of Golden is whether or not they come from a working strain; colour is not usually a factor when it comes to price of the puppy.

With all due respect, the Golden Retriever originated in Scotland, UK in the late 19th century so I will always defer to the British Kennel Club when it comes to standards. I have even seen actual American owners ask or argue where the Retriever originated lol. Light gold or cream is the original colour of the Golden retriever, the British retriever. It is no surprise that you would pay more for an British Retriever, you are getting the original breed. It is widely accepted that English retrievers are milder in temperament than their American counterpart which has higher energy levels and is more susceptable to seperation anxiety, these observations have been made over 100 years of breeding and ownership. Nobody wants to think that someone else's kid outshines theirs but I am afraid that when it comes to Goldens, the British variety is just a cut above. The differences came about because the American Retriever was bred to the American Kennel Club standards whereas the British Retriever is bred to the original UK Kennel Club standard. American Retrievers are smaller, a different shape, have a shorter lifespan and more than 20% more likely to contract cancer, I would almost call that a bastardization of the breed but then in a part of the world where it is still legal and deemed acceptable to mutilate your dogs by docking tails and cropping ears, feeding bulldogs and pitbulls steroids and growth hormone while still calling them by the original breed name, as a lifelong devoted dog lover and owner I find these things repulsive as does most of Europe.
@mel87123 Жыл бұрын
Much of what you just said applies to all "purebred" dogs. Purebred dogs are by design inbred and genetically inferior to what nature provides. They have been manipulated by humans to amplify many mutations that would never persist in the wild because they decrease fitness. Standard biology and genetics texts support this truth. I have had several breeds of purebred dogs and all have had breed related issues. The last two I owned were considered the best of the best...health screened and from Westminster stock...yet, they too had breed related health issues. Now I have a strict "mutt only" policy. Mutts are less expensive to obtain, are generally healthier, and are often homeless. They also are much more interesting and aesthetically pleasing to me. I adopted my current dog for $50. He was a six-year old mutt surrendered by his family and on death row. It was the best $50 I ever spent.

I want to mention also, that as a dog lover, I find all dog breeding repulsive. I am an American, and I think it is best to avoid generalizations.

Additionally, people often learn and grow with experience, so I am allowed to change my beliefs and principles. I have a lot more wisdom now than I did as a child and young adult. I also have a Biology degree and a good bit of genetics study under my belt. I have decided that mixed breeds are superior and much more interesting. I have no interest in buying an inbred dog whose genetics have been manipulated to conform to an artificial "standard" that prioritizes aesthetics over health. Nature chooses what is healthy, so the more mixed a dog is the better. Genetic diversity improves health. Inbreeding concentrates and perpetuates bad genes. I also realize that there are millions of dogs killed in shelters every year, so I see no need for me to buy a genetically inferior animal when there are better options out there and animals in need. I don't go around pointing my finger at people regarding their purebred dogs. I am polite. I often complement their dog's cute face and give it a pat. They have the right to have whatever dog they choose. You chose to generalize about Americans, so I decided to air my opinion and discuss some facts about purebred dogs and genetics.

I work with dogs. I like regular Goldens, but my experience with English Cream Goldens has been the opposite. I think breeders are being very irresponsible and causing genetic issues which leads to their poor temperament. They have been the most stubborn dogs i have worked with and have no understanding of how they can hurt you with their weight and strength. They have such few natural instincts that they NEED to be trained.

@linsen8890 Жыл бұрын
The AKC is correct. There is no such thing as an "English Cream" Golden Retriever. There are only light, golden, and dark Golden Retrievers. Unethical breeders present so-called "English Cream" Goldens as somehow special and charge way more money for them. They aren't different in any significant way. It's just marketing, and unethical marketing, at that.

People need to stop focusing on colour - there are American style Goldens and English style Goldens (ranging from cream to medium/darker gold). It's about the slightly different structure and look of the dog - not the colour. Field Goldens are slimmer, rangier and more athletic - they are bred to do a job, not for show ring conformation. Right now I have an English style retriever and she is medium gold. There were creams in her litter - they're just variations of colour - but the look of the dog - the blocky head, rounder eyes, deeper chest and heavier bone are the same. English retrievers are not all cream.

There is no such thing as an "English Creme Golden Retriever". Golden Retrievers are first and foremost a Scottish Breed - not "English". Colour is irrelevant - the UKKC breed standard is - any shade of gold or cream, neither red or mahogany. Selling dogs as "rare" is a con and people should not fall for this scam. Find a breeder you can trust and work with them to find the best puppy for you - regardless of colour.

Few pet owners could care less what AKC says or thinks! Using the term "style" is ridiculous! Dogs are "bred" not styled! English cream retrievers are less inbred compared to American goldens and therefore live longer and have less health issues. Check out the statistics in Europe and New Zealand for longevity and health. That is the reason English cream retrievers are more expensive and more desirable.
