When you lived up north and worked 5 days a week in a factory or a steel mill in the 1970's, your weekend mattered and that means soul music is a very serious thing indeed.

For Northern Arseholes Only! On the one hand, it's nice to catch a glimpse of these legends of Soul Music in the flesh, BUT these cheap, nasty, crass, tantamount to KARAOKE versions, are an insult to the original Northern Soul gems and to the memory of these legendary artists! Ian ‘Bad Boys Inc.' Levine is guilty of destroying our legacy & pissing on our memories!

I love this! I grew up with Soul music and found out much later in life that there were scenes like this outside of the USA. I heard Chicago still has at least one or two soul clubs left.

There are 'Northern Soul' discos hosted around the world now - including in the US itself, in Detroit, New York and San Francisco. Also in Germany, Japan etc. - I read that some UK squaddies even held one up near the Arctic Circle once. LOL

Graham Warr was a major force in discovering records on the scene, never got the credit he deserved

Re. Herb Ward. "Honest To Goodness" was a big fave of mine, played by Graham Warr at the Cats.

@drwhatson......Totally agree Dave - Herb Ward. "Honest To Goodness" was an absolute monster choon at the Cats and always packed the floor out. Fetches pretty big money these days [especially the original 1968 RCA promo copy which we bought for a tenner back in the day]. Got to know Graham Warr [and his Mrs Julie] quite well after we left the Northern scene - they moved to Hereford and opened a clothes store]. He didn't really get the credit he deserved IMHO - although I remember him being very nervous when he first started DJing at the Cats.

@@thesoultwins72 Yep. I've only actually seen Graham a few times in the last 10 years but was a regular at Chaplin's and the Rum-Runner and bought some great records from his shop in the Oasis of course... Manzel, Phillip Wright, Beloyd etc.

@@drwhatson......Mmm - I never knew Graham DJ'd at the Rum Runner! [and Iain and I DJ'd there for ages!] When was Graham DJing there - do you remember Dave? Apart from us there was only really Shaun - who exclusively played Jazz-Funk on Saturday & Sundays and a couple of mid-week nights. Although Ian and I would sometimes DJ on Saturdays & Sundays too. But then Paul Berrow [who was totally bonkers] and owned the Rum Runner with his brother Michael decided to introduce a new brand of music he had heard being played after going to a few 'trendy' clubs in London. So we launched a Tuesday night gig playing 'New Wave/Romantic' stuff like [early] Ultravox, Human League, Spandau Ballet, Gary Newman etc as well as John Fox, The Psychedelic Furs, Associates, Kissing the Pink, Martha & the Muffins, Pigbag, Yellow and Kraftwerk etc. To be honest and whilst some of the stuff wasn't bad, Iain and I weren't really into it - so we introduced Paul to an 'up-and-coming' DJ called 'Dickie' who took over the Tuesday nights from us - and the rest is history as they say! [Dickie went on to become quite a 'face' in Birmingham and even remixed a few albums for The Beloved]. At that point, I had really got into Latin-Jazz, obscure soul, rare groove and Jazz-funk. So after working at a few clubs around Birmingham - I started a night at a club called 'Antony's' at 5-ways and it was absolutely mega! [probably the best club I ever DJ'd at - brilliant atmosphere and crowd.]. People were coming from all over as you could only hear most of the records I was playing there. I even got offered nights at the infamous 'Wag' club in London, as well as a place in Stoke [forget the name!] and 'The Point' in Milton Keynes - where I eventually became resident DJ. Then as quickly as it started it was over - Rave suddenly hit the UK!

@@thesoultwins72 Graham actually *started* the Jazz-Funk nights at the Rum-Runner after Chaplin's ended L. :-) Shaun Williams and Dave Till took over when Graham retired to Hereford at the end of 1979. I was a regular there when Jazz-Funk was played on Monday Nights (I have a framed poster in my hall :-P). There were also a few "exchange visits" with Cassenelli's, in Standish, nr. Wigan (Colin Curtis) after Graham left. A bunch of us also went to a gig that Graham put on in Hereford, in 1981 I think - we all slept on the floor at Graham's house!

Mad this popped up,I've got the dvd of these clips," Strange world of northern soul". And although I never got to go to Wigan I look at many many clips and I feel I'm right there with them. Mad how you just feel connected with all of it. 62yrs old now and let me tell ya there's no other music for me for sure,my stomache even turning now and I'm only texting. It's good to see the younger generation k.t.f, but let's be honest they will never feel what we felt first time round. Looking back at the fashion then I still think it's the best. And another thing girls and boys nearer enough dressed the same ha! Even hair styles. Ain't no soul like the old sole.✊
