Actually the numbers of plastic surgery done in Korea includes the surgeries took by foreigners. The Korean plastic surgry skills got famous and drew a large number of foreigners to visit Korea for the surgery. So if you look into the statistics they hold quite a big portion.
@PoprocksPpАй бұрын
i think that’s a reach… 80% of my Korean friends have had plastic surgery. I would still say it’s majority Koreans getting the procedures.

There is much controversy surrounding the claim that the proportion of Koreans who have undergone plastic surgery is the highest in the world. As you mentioned earlier, a significant portion of medical tourism consists of plastic surgery tours from countries worldwide, particularly China and Japan, and this influence is known to be quite substantial. However, excluding breast and buttock augmentation procedures, it is almost certain that Korea would still rank first. (If these procedures are included, Korea's ranking could potentially drop significantly depending on the method of data collection and the number of foreigners traveling for surgery.)

Hey! I'm glad you had a good time in Korea! I just wanted to leave some comments to give you a better explanation. First of all, yes, Korean people do care about appearance. I think many Koreans view it as good manners to present themselves appropriately. This mindset leads men to dress neatly and pay attention to their appearance, while women strive to look prettier and also take care of their appearance-though for women, I think this is common everywhere. One cultural reason why Koreans care about appearance can be traced back to a historical record from more than 10 centuries ago, showing that hygiene was important even then. A historical text called Goryeo Dokyeong, written by an envoy named 徐兢 (Xu Jing) from the Song Dynasty (China), details his experience in Goryeo (Korea) in 1123. (An interesting fact: Korea has been called Korea since the Goryeo era because Europeans pronounced Goryeo as Corea, Corée, etc.) In this record, he references an old history book, Book of Wei (China, 220 ~ 550), which mentions that in Goguryeo (which later became Goryeo), people took pleasure in cleanliness and purity, regardless of social class, high or low. He then says, this custom persisted, and they even mocked the Chinese for being unclean and greasy. It was common for them to bathe before leaving the house in the morning, and during the summer months, they would bathe twice a day. Also, regarding the idea that Korean parents gift double eyelid surgery as a graduation present, it's more nuanced. It's more like "If you want it, wait at least until you grow up"(And we all know how high school-er girls express interest in alongside makeup and other beauty trends. No offence though). The legal age to drink and vote in Korea is 19, the year after high school graduation, which may explain why this phrase has gained popularity. Though as a Korean myself, I’ve heard the phrase existed but haven't personally encountered anyone who says it or received such surgery as a graduation gift. However, I do know women who opted for double eyelid surgery shortly after graduation(And as they are young, they would have received financial support from their parents I presume). For instance, my sister underwent the surgery in her 20s, even though our family naturally develops double eyelids later in life. My father got his in his mid-20s, and mine are also starting to form as I age(I’m in my late 20s but after noticing a slight wrinkle, I realized my skin needed the care and so I started using skincare products(by which I mean lotions) in my mid-20s (and thankfully, the wrinkle is gone now) whereas my father have not been and still don't really use skin care products. Also, my father had much more sun exposure than I have, which I think explains the difference in the age of when it's forming.) Many prefer surgery rather than waiting for natural changes, even within families like ours where it occurs eventually.

not that you asked lol but the main reason for Bukchon and Ikseondong having a very different vibe is cos Bukchon is a residential area and almost all of the houses are people's living spaces. whereas Ikseondong is an area that stood to be torn down. I walked around the area almost a decade ago and it was almost all abandoned and worn down and several hanoks had caved in roofs. we randomly came midday and we didn't see any other people walking around the area. there were maybe a handful of restaurants and cafes that had been there a long time, but all the rest has been restored and beautified cos that's (almost?) the only way to save old neighbourhoods in Seoul, by turning them into photo ops and tourist spots. oh, and for the photo booths you mentioned in Hongdae. for Koreans they're probably mainly a younger people thing, but as far as I've seen, tourists of all ages also seem to think it's a fun way to remember their time in Korea. all of our group of travellers thought that way so we tried a bunch of different booths all over Korea :)
@ONWorldTravel5 ай бұрын
Good to know! Always appreciate when locals can give us more information and insight. 😃 Bukchon really is so beautifully preserved - I have more compassion for the people who live there now because I’m sure it takes some patience with all the tourists lol thanks! -Olivia

@@ONWorldTravel yeah I think that’s a real issue. they have signs to ask people to keep their voices down, but with as many people as in your footage - which was crazy! I’ve never seen that amount of people there before. I’ve only been there off season so a LOT less people, but it must be such a pain to deal with for the resident.

That double eyelid surgery as gift for graduation trope is so overhyped by foreigners. None of BP or BTS members had plastic surgery as far I know. Foreigners and media always get obsessed with plastic surgery in South Korea, more so than Koreans. Living in Southern California, the amount of plastic surgery here is no different. 🙄🤦🏻♂️

I'm an American, and I've been living in Korea for 16 years. Many foreigners say that Koreans work too much, but that's because they choose to. In any country, if you don't work a lot, you can't earn much money. There are plenty of people who live like that. It's just that in Korea, there are more people who want to work harder to earn more money. In the U.S., too, you have to work very hard to succeed. However, there are also many people in the U.S. who are content with earning less and not working as hard. In poorer countries, you may find more people who don't work much, but they live in poverty instead. Koreans simply find joy in working hard. To foreigners, this may feel like Koreans are being forced to live this way without a choice, but in reality, there are also many people here who don't work a lot, earn less, and instead spend their time enjoying life. When people evaluate Korea on the internet, they often do so based on strange stereotypes. As an American who has lived in Korea for a long time, I see that there are many misconceptions. For example, people say that Korea has a low crime rate because there are many CCTVs. However, if you look at the number of CCTVs per 100 people, there are many countries with more CCTVs than Korea, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Germany, france, autralia..etc. Yet Korea has far fewer crimes compared to those countries. It’s not because of the CCTVs. But for some reason, foreigners tend to claim that it's because of them. Even though the U.S. ranks first in CCTVs per capita, they still say this.

Korea is a country ravaged from war in the 50s - destroyed from top to bottom for many years. Then while rebuilding 60s and 70s was living in poverty, so the city was not well planned out when it was rebuilt - that is why there are not too many tourist attraction authentically Korean in Seoul. You have to get out of the city to different provinces to get the real old feeling of authentic traditional Korea

Spicy korean food is modern korean food, not traditional food. The only sauce for tteokbokki and bibim- guksu(nengmyeon) were originally soy sauce, not gochujang sauce.

I don't know how I haven't seen you guys' videos in a long time (I blame the algorithm), but WOW has your videography level improved. Absolutely stunning scenery and b-roll to add to your hilarious personalities. I had to hit that bell thing to make sure I don't miss any more. Safe travels, guys!!
