I used to live and work in VN for 9+ years, in HCMC but also traveled to Hanoi on business trips. I have since moved back to the States for 10 years now but I miss VN, its fun and caring people, its delicious food at awesome price, its beautiful scenery, and its vibrancy. Although in my position I had commute privilege (taxi card or shuttle pick up and take home), I bought a Honda Spacy and loved riding the scooter to and from work. I miss the exhilaration of feeling so free while at the same time being part of a community of hundreds of fellow riders, like a fish swimming amongst a school of fish dancing in the ocean. I miss seeing couples riding their scooter with the girlfriend/wife hugging closely to their boyfriend/husband, whispering something into his ears and burst out laughing. I miss seeing young children riding in the front craning their head back asking his/her dad/mom a question about something. I miss bursting out laughing for having heard the rider next to me saying something funny and getting caught out for being nosy. I miss feeling so proud of myself the day that I was able to stop my scooter at the sign of heavy rain droplets, lift my scooter seat unfold the rain poncho slipping it on my head then my arms put the helmet back on and get back onto the scooter in 14 seconds flat (it took me 1.5 years to get to that point). I miss riding home and all of a sudden smelling something delicious from a fresh coal pit so I pull up onto the sidewalk and got that food for $2 for a complete meal. I hate it then but I chuckle to myself now thinking about my swearing at the damn container truck and passenger bus that run on a tight time frame and honking so damn loud, practically running us scooter riders off the road (those are truly scary bastards). I know the pollution and the dust get to you but for some reason, I and we all adapted. And now I just feel so strange driving in my car so desensitize to my suburb. I feel the same sense of numbness when I walk into a super market and can't smell anything, not even smell the fragrance of fruits because they're all picked well before they're tree ripened. I'm not complaining about the serenity and the peaceful air but it feels sterile. I know many will think I'm painting a rosy picture, that I'm romanticizing a haphazard commute, but honestly, it was a difficult but fun and emotive thing that I did daily for 9+ years that I enjoyed for the most part and miss now. It's kind of like you talk to your parents and they will tell you about the difficult things they had to live through in the early and formative part of their life, but they will tell you with a smile on their face.

Great video! We were in Hanoi last July and boy, the weather was different. I can't imagine being there needing a coat! We also had coffee at Nang (twice), ate a Cha Ca, and the little dessert bowl place. So cool! Love your editing and sense of humor. Makes me want to go back and do it again.

Do you know the "farm" that you visited on 6:15, you could actually went inside, harvested whatever you wanted, and then came out and they'd weight what you took and gave you the price. Cheaper than buying from the market, a lot. I sometimes go there to harvest some tomato and chili. Bring a little peace of mind away from the noisy city. That farm is not outside of the city, it's in the middle. The people living there are the poorest one in Hanoi. They technically don't own the right for that land, but the city just let them stay there anyway because otherwise, they have no where else to go. It's hard to farm and still live in an expensive city (relatively), so most of the kids you saw there will never see education unless there are charity groups take guardianship of them.

The part Hanoian is taxed based on how wide the buildings are is incorrect. The fact that you see many narrow houses is because of inheritance. The amount of people in Vietnam is many many times more compare to like 100 years ago. When the parent owned a big house, and then they had 5-10 kids, when they died, they'd leave the house to all of them, and each house get split into many narrower one (because everyone want to have the access path from the street). Just get through 3-4 generations and the land end up like this. PS: I once lived in your 10:59 frame. Sold it, move to the outskirt for a bigger place. Since then I went back a few times and see it's already split into two.

The drink price menu you've show on train street is not expensive at all for that touristy place. In Saigon if you go to any air conditioned cafe the price can be even higher. That construction thing is illegal to work that late, latest is 10pm. I'm Vietnamese never been to Hanoi and I heard enough laws breakers story that I don't even thought visiting it, maybe other northern regions not the "wild East" Hanoi. I'm proud of my Saigon more, bigger than Hanoi yet somehow more open and less backwardness in some aspect of life.

You should avoid Saigon and Hanoi if you are coming to VN for the first time . Go to Danang , Hoi An , Nha Trang or Dalat first to get acclimatized slowly to the Vietnam environment before heading to the crazy biggest cities of this country . The vibe is completely different and much quieter there than Hanoi and Saigon . Also don't stay in the hectic old quarter of Hanoi but opt for Tây Ho , Câu Giây , Ba Dinh , Kim Ma districts where it's much nicer , cleaner and less chaotic .
